How quickly things can change! Further cementing itself as NZs new flagship stable Marsh Racing looks to have a stranglehold on both 3yo classics this year.

Swiss Prince from maiden to G1 winner in three starts?   Well Written the same?

Will Tajana take on the boys?

Hostility drifts to $18 - should have a zero added. His value probably lost a zero yesterday and he races like he needs to lose his manhood.

Any sneaky contenders?

Tajana is going to run the 2000. The 1000 Guineas looks like being a cracker and if Well Written is as good as she seems she'll be very tough to beat. Got away with a bit at Ellerslie last start and the straight at Riccarton is a real tester..can't wait.

WR trialled on the synthetic at Cambridge way back but has never raced left-handed. Riccarton can be tricky for some and she's unlikely to get it as easy as Ellerslie. Of course, I'm not saying she can't do it but something to consider.

Surely Hostility won't carry on to the Guineas. He was awful yesterday.

Too much pressure? Got the TA treatment I'd say.

Sam B admitted he had never felt so nervous before a maiden race.  Also huge pressure on a young man for the likes of Hostility and Avantaggia to perform.   Nearly $5m invested in just those two horses alone at sale time including gst and insurance.

Bucky this is not fair...unless you have proof not hear say then please do not cast aspersions on everyone at Matamata...if you have an issue with someone then sort it out privately not in an open forum...this type of rumor I will not allow unless you are prepared to put up ALL the facts.

Fine. Delete my post then. I'm not going to name anyone or the horse but it is common knowledge amongst people who use the track.

Back onto the subject of the Guineas, I note the CJC will only offer their "slot" to the two winners. I suppose this is the Domain Ace adjustment. I wonder what they will do if neither of the winners want a slot like last year? Perhaps offer it to a SI horse or sell it to the HKJC?

1,000 Guineas field now finalised.

Two observations in my mind:

1. Half the field is Australian bred: Well Written, Cool Aza Rene, LIttle Black Dress, Bona Sforza, Belle du Monde and Origin Of Love, with 3 of those trained by Te Akau.  9 fillies are eligible for the NZB Kiwi.

2. 3 are trained in Cambridge, 4 by Te Akau (you can argue if some are "South Island trained" or not), 1 other in Matamata, 1 in Rotorua for 9 (?) from the North; 1 from the CD and 2 trained in the South Island.

Hostility: Beaten a neck by Tajana on debut, then beat Tajana when 2nd in a Gr. 1. First up slow away and checked midrace in a race where they basically finished in the same order as they were in at the 600m. Second up carried off the track by a wayward runner. Third up blew the start and got back in a race where the tearaway leader was only caught late (so they obviously weren't going THAT hard and favouring the backmarkers).

Obviously if they can tidy up his barrier manners that'd help immensely, but even without that I think he'd be suited at a mile left-handed on a big track (so a Guineas, a Bayer Classic at Trentham, or even a Captain Cook or Thorndon with no weight on his back). He's not quite ready to be chucked on Gavelhouse yet IMO.

If he was mine he'd be in a big paddock with no gear and no feed for the next 3 months. Too much pressure has stuffed him but not irreversibly so hopefully.

Expectations possibly more related to the purchase price rather than the animal itself.

eh? This horse has potential, to be sure - and a pedigree from heaven - but it's still a maiden and ya reckon its Thorndon material already?
Ya sure ye're not 'reaching' Counsellor chicknsmack?
