Given the carpark draw and the quality of the field in the Sir Rupert Clark Stakes st Caulfield today. is she any chance? Her sectionals for her last start in The Cockram were the best of the day so that counts in her favour. Arguably one of our best 3 year olds last year, can she measure up in the big leagues?

I think she has a great chance today. Miss Roumbini was outstanding fresh and has got a great chance as well.

It would surprise me if she figures in the finish, but I have often been surprised before.

People have to remember her best ever performance in a Group race was a third in the Group 3 Gold Trail. This might be her first ever go in a group 1.

Nice run given circumstances, no quarter given when there racing for the big money, very sad to see the other horse break down, heartbreaking for all concerned

I thought a couple of others in the race were better runs...but she is a decent mare.

A pass mark maybe on that run, she ran on but not as well as some of the others, it would be a similar field in the Toorak and stronger in the GE. Hard to have a lot of confidence going forward. based on todays performance. No luck for Angel Capital either. They dont give Gp 1s away.

I suspect DR more suited to HQ than the Heath or MV

She strikes me as a horse than needs to be worked and put into the race at the 800/600 as often she trucks into 4th or 5th with gas in the tank

My jury is out but tending to lead towards thinking she may be a click or two against the best but a very competitive horse nevertheless

Not one of D Lane’s better rides…and that is being kind. Should have won by panels….:rcf-monkey:

Commiserations to the connections of Chorlton Lane….very sad sight.

This is what the riders thought of their mount's performance in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

■ ■ ■ ■ ■

1st – SEPALS (Craig Williams) I had the right horse presented by the horse's trainer, Cliff Brown and all his staff. From an outside barrier this horse made effortless work of it and I could do what I wanted on him because he was very well-prepared and he's a bloody good horse too. It's hard to win Group 1s and he's done it and that's not it for this horse, he's got more to come. He's just got such a good action, he's got a great motor and I was very fortunate to ride him today.

2nd – MISS ROUMBINI (Beau Mertens) Fantastic run. She was just a little bit slow away, from a wide draw we had to go back from then on in even though we were far away we had a lovely run in transit and she showed an electric turn of foot, just unfortunately we were a bit far off Sepals and she put her best foot forward and ran a super race.

3rd – FEROCE (Billy Egan) Come back really well, another good stepping stone for later on this prep.

4th – ANGEL CAPITAL (Damian Lane) Pilot had a nightmare.

5th – PINSTRIPED (Jamie Mott) Rode him in behind today, he travelled great, just unfortunately had Another Wil outside me that just held us in. I was wanting to get building before the corner but I had to sprint once I got out and I thought he was terrific.

6th – ZOU SENSATION (Luke Currie) Ran great. I wanted to be a little bit closer but he wasn't going to hold that spot. Come back, travelled well behind Another Wil and he felt like he was going to be right in it at the top of the straight and held his ground well.

7th – DAMASK ROSE (Michael Dee) Happy with the run. She quickened up nicely and stuck on really well.

8th – JENNILALA (Harry Coffey) Really honest. Ran well, felt the pinch late once she was presented but she ran really well and did a good job.

9th – HERE TO SHOCK (Daniel Stackhouse) He ran well, just with the 58 kilos in a brutally run race just a little bit tough for him.

10th – ARKANSAW KID (Blake Shinn) He was slightly disappointing. We had a nice run from the draw but he got the turn, got the run and just failed to finish off today.

11th – PORT LOCKROY (Jye McNeil) He just found this level a little bit tough today. He had a good draw and a good run but potentially looking for further.

12th – IS IT ME (Patrick Moloney) Not a Caulfield horse around 1400m, not dynamic enough, but I think he's going fantastic for a target race at Flemington during Cup Week.

13th – ANOTHER WIL (Jamie Melham) Nothing went right in that race for him today. I thought he was back to almost near his best but he's not come back at all, so Janice has got to put him in the paddock for a long time and see if that can bring him back to his best.

14th – ZARASTRO (Angela Jones) Not the Zarastro we know. He was very quick to fold and wasn't able to find anything in the straight, so hopefully he pulls up well.

N/A – CHORLTON LANE (Celine Gaudray) Failed to finish.

Race 8 - G1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m)

Favourite: Angel Capital ($2.90)

What happened: The sizzling pace meant Angel Capital had to drift back and he was ultimately caught in a tough inside position near the tail. Damian Lane got him away from the rail and traveling inside the 600 metres but he did not see daylight again until it was way too late and he flew for fourth when finally clear.

Lane said: "The pilot had a nightmare."

Charlie Duckworth said: "Obviously devastated. Just never got a crack at them."

RV stewards: Angel Capital was held up from the 400m until gaining a clear run approaching the 50m. When questioned regarding his riding, Damian Lane explained he expected to settle towards the rear of the field and his primary intention was to have the horse settle. Lane stated in the early stages after beginning on terms his mount commenced to over race and near the 1100m after being crossed by Damask Rose his mount got its head up when awkwardly placed on that mares heels and shifted in. When questioned as to whether or not he could have remained trailing Damask Rose, Lane explained that Angel Capital continued to over race and for this reason he remained to the inside of Damask Rose as he felt this may have assisted Angel Capital in settling as he had more room and furthermore, he was in a position behind Feroce, which he felt would provide him with a favourable trail. Lane added that he continued to follow Feroce rounding the home turn and he endeavoured to improve between that horse and Damask Rose, however, when both of those horses shifted ground he was disappointed for that run near the 300m and he was then unable to improve until near the 50m. Lane added, in hindsight, he should have remained trailing Damask Rose in the early stages.

2nd and 3rd horses ran past her so jury out as to whether she is Grp 1 ability in OZ at shorter distances

There is no evidence that she is up to Group 1 company in NZ to date. All she has done is won a couple of restricted entry listed races. I can't recall exactly who was in those races but I don't think any of the NZ runners were all that flash or have gone on to do much. All I can recall is that Domain Ace finished last in one of them.

Very good. Definitely the horse to follow out of that race.

Sepals is also very handy. As professional as they come for a horse on the rise. Sepals will never need luck, but Angel Capital will always need things to go its way despite having more raw ability.

Have to agree. She's clearly not up to that level in Australia, and her form in NZ is suspect. For example, Perfumist, who was one of the fancies for the NZB Kiwi, has done nothing since. Penman was also disappointing on Sat.
