Neighbour says ‘there was just no way’ to save man from Upper Hutt house fire

Chris Marriner

The neighbour of a man who died in a house fire overnight in the Upper Hutt suburb of Trentham has described her desperate attempts to rescue him.

“We tragically lost our neighbour,” she told Stuff.

The man’s next-door neighbour says she was woken by her dog shortly after 2am on Tuesday and heard “crashing and banging” from next door, which was windows breaking.

She rushed next door with her partner to find most of the property on Tararua St ablaze and tried “desperately” to get inside to rescue the man, but the pair were beaten back by the intensity of the fire.

“We were calling out to him and trying to get in but there was just no way.”

She said she had lived next door to the man for 25 years and described him as “amazing horseman” who bred and raced thoroughbreds.

“It’s been pretty rough,” she said, adding their attempts to rescue the man will “sit with us for a while”.

A police spokesperson confirmed that one person was found dead at the property

Police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand investigators carried out a scene examination this morning and police say the fire is not believed to be suspicious but the cause is still to be determined.

The house is immediately adjacent to Louis Street named after previous land owner Peter Louis a noted thoroughbred owner and punter.  He had notable horses trained by Bill Wylie at Trentham.

The house was adjacent to the Louis Street subdivision and previously paddocks where Peter Louis (famed owner and punter from 1960s) kept his thoroughbreds.

"Bil Wylie used to train for Peter Louis.... he was a big punter and worked in the Shoe industry

"Graduating as a jockey in 1959 Wylie continued to ride with a great deal of success but in the early 1960s he began to combine his riding with training, mostly for Trentham identity Peter Louis.

Wylie's first training success came when Nell, which he also rode, won at Tauherenikau in December, 1962.

Among the notable horses he trained for Louis included Princess Donna, Miss Mod (who won the Welcome Stakes) and Shiloko who was a good two-year-old who first won at Riccarton and then scored in the Breeders' Plate at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, 1963."

Can't remember if it was Wyllie or Peter Louis who officially trained these two but Johns Pal and Harrys Pal were two I remember , Harrys Pal won the shorts handicap at Trentham and when Loui placed his bet the divi went from $15 to $7 and when Johns Pal won the winter cup Louis had a double with the field, the smallest combination was $100 , in those days Loui was a massive punter, he also had about 20 horses of his own horses in work at that time .

At Trentham Peter Louis always carried a leather suitcase full of money. Aware that other punters kept a close eye on him he often had one of his shoe shop female employees put large bets on for him. Pretty astute!

And a bit of humour I saw him one day standing at the bottom of the members stand with a women's shoe  in his hand , he had stopped a lady and asked if he could have a look at her new shoes and there she was leaning on the rail one foot in the air waiting for the return of her shoe , Loui owned a shoe making factory , De Luxe shoes I think it was named .

Harry’s Pal and Johns Pal both trained by  Peter Louis. Met him several times at Trentham, very quiet softly spoken guy who was a listener rather than talker.

Landed massive punts often with Noel Eastwood on top. Often took doubles landing on his horses. Never knew the colour of a place ticket.

Fearless punter and great character, always enjoyed his company

Quietly spoken , now you've made me laugh , he could really explode at the track in the morning and his eyes would turn red .

Peter Louis passed away a long time ago, early 2000’s I think, so not him.

His wife Winifred passed away after him in 2015 aged 87.

Indeed Dave, Peter been gone many years and Winifred, from memory was in a retirement village in Upper Hutt then out Waikanae I think

My time with Peter was 71 to 73, Johns Pal won the second leg at Riccarton and Enceeoh won the steeplechase first leg, and PJ broke the tote, not enough cash on course to pay him out. I collected 950$, my annual wage at the time was 3600$. Biggest collect ever, bought a brand new Mini 850 and had change

Looking at the picture it looks like Peter Louis property. Don't know if he still lived there or if it was one of his sons

Perhaps it was Peter Louis original family home as it was built circa 1950's - if the information about that property is the same one as on Property website public records.

Was there a Peter Louis senior who originally had this home built ?

If so, he owned Master Dash in the Futurity in February 1947, trained by HR Telford.

Peter Louis was 72 in 1981 - so if he was still alive would be how young?

It's nice to reflect on his contributions and this of his era.

He will be looking down from above at these posts...

Terribly sad about what appears also to be at their original family home as he got married around 1949/ 1950.

Fatal House Fire At Trentham

Police are now in a position to release the name of the man who was found deceased after a house fire in Trentham, Upper Hutt on Tuesday [10 June] morning.

He was 69 year old, John Louis.

Police extends our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.

The cause of the fire is not believed to be suspicious.

John's Pal and Harry's Pal, appear to be named after two of Louis and Wini's four children, John and Harry.

They were trained and successful in the early 1970's.

What a wonderful legacy and great way to include family.
