Sorry Sam the CJC who have a spot...you would presume for South Island Racing but chose to attach it to their Group One races in NOVEMBER.

When buying a slot in the NZB Kiwi the Board of the CJC did so with a strategy in mind to market and promote participation in the2024 AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI NEW ZEALAND TWO THOUSAND GUINEAS® and BARNESWOOD FARM NEW ZEALAND ONE THOUSAND GUINEAS® and provide an added benefit for a three-year-old running in one of those races

QUESTIONS TO CJC 

How many owners/trainers came to the 2 Guineas races with the NZB ticket in mind........NONE

How many races have been won by those who contested both Guineas races since......ONE SAVAGLEE

Why would you use November form for a race in March

Surely you should support the Owners/Trainers who pay Track Fees, Stable Rental and who support your Club 12 months of the year.

 

Sadly the best 3yo from the South Island in many years may be missing from the NZB.

I think Sam has interviewed very well, both prior to the race and subsequently. She speaks well and with dignity.

The CJC has come out of this rather poorly. Going with a Northern no-hoper when the South has a more than suitable candidate. Shows them to be fairly incompetent. Mind you this is the club that put an extra $100,000 into the Cup last season that hardly anyone knew about. They aren't good with money.

Shows they don't really think they represent SI racing, just their own interests.

It is very sad, and we in the SI need a boost as far as Thoroughbreds go, soon we will loose the Guinea’s races and that’s Cup Week goneburger.

It is certainly a real shame for the South Island. Compare her time with Legarto : 1.21.7 vs 1.23.3 both on Good4 tracks --it gives a good indication how good she is.

I'm sure the Aussies will be taking notice so I hope Colin Wightman can hold his nerve or at least get a very good deal for himself out of it.

Ozzie K must surely be circling! Always after another horse. Good thing is he often keeps the original owners in. As good if not better than Leica Lucy. Time to start ringing some potholders if they haven’t already

To add to my point above the Appollo Stakes was just run at Randwick on a Good 4 track with winner, Fangirl, taking it in 1.22.18. Many of the runners are starting their prep but they would not go into a race like underdone..

Plus Sam didn't need to have the foot to the floor, and nothing got anywhere near her.

Managed to duck into the TAB in Napier to watch the Southland Guineas. PIVOTAL TEN was extremely good though not sure what she beat.

Beating any field nearly nine lengths is noteworthy - where does she go from here? Surely she’ll have to go into some deeper waters somewhere but my ignorance of the New Zealand pattern prevents me offering any meaningful suggestions,

At Matamata, not sure what to make of RETURN TO CONQUER in the Slipper. To me, he’s crying out for further but the stable mate ran a huge race in second and has come on a ton for the Wanganui debut run.

LEGARTO was huge in the Champagne - a seriously class act and presumably this was a warm up for some big autumn targets. LA DORADA followed up her Karaka Millions win with a front running performance in which the first two dominated but with three of the field missing the start I’m not sure of the value of the form.

Finally, a quick word for Kevin Stott and another fine ride to win the last on DESERT MYSTIC.

I would expect so, that was a huge win and she did it on her ear.  You can only beat whatever is in the race, and she showed that she was well above them and was just there to see who took her on,and she said this is my race.  She can handle any track and is such a free runner.  She deserves the chance, no matter what the outcome

“Not sure what she beat “….well Sesimbra 2 starts back was at ELLERSLIE, she got 4th and was 3.9 lengths behind the winner (Sought After) who is in the kiwi.

There are five Saturdays in March this year - it’s the same for you as well of course - and normally we have the Saturday after Cheltenham with the Midlands Grand National and the following weekend is the first of the new turf flat season with the Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster as the third and fourth Saturdays which is fine but the extra Saturday has left a real gap.

The final Newbury jump meeting has been brought forward a week as has the Kelso meeting but it’s in truth a very weak Saturday - not much better than a weekday.

I  must confess I’ll get up and review the Trentham meeting to see how PIVOTAL TEN runs.

Can I inquire as to the owner of this very smart horse being Colin Wrightman? Which to me seems to be the case, and I don't know this man at all.

Irrespective of people's opinions of each other, in the racing world we congratulate all owners of good horses given we all aspire to have one.

Perhaps but is the Kiwi going to be “the” race? We don’t have slot races in the UK and I don’t think they are a good idea.

Don’t get me wrong - the race is well framed and the money excellent but why not simply have it as an open race and give the fast improving 3-y-o a chance? Would the likes of PIVOTAL TEN have gone for it if it hadn’t been a slot race?

The other problem with inserting a “new” race into the Pattern is how it impacts on the other Group races. It’s often better to upgrade an existing race much as Ascot did when they turned the Cork & Orrery into the Golden Jubilee in 2002.

As for the concept of a “Champions Day”, everyone does it now but you have to be careful the next month’s racing isn’t a case of “after the Lord Mayor’s Show”. I think it’s a month too early to mark a season climax or for you moving from autumn to winter racing. The British one is arguably too late but is hemmed in by the Arc and the Breeders Cup - yours, I suspect, would suffer with competition from the Australian autumn meetings if it were in April so you’ve gone the Irish route and got your season ending championship races in nice and early

A pity I wasn't at that Napier TAB.  I have always enjoyed Stodge's comments on this site and I am certain he would be a wonderful gentleman to join for a pint or three.
