Syndicates

Recommended Posts

A number of prominent trainers and syndicate managers have voiced their credentials and their intentions of buying several lots at Karaka for syndication. As per usual Te Akau principal has voiced his intention of retaining the mantle as top buyer at the fixture and it would be difficult to head him off but I note that TA still has thirteen yearlings from the magic Millions available, costing from $120k to $600k with still 12.5% to 100% available. One would assume that these horses have all initially been paid for but there are still a lot of gaps to fill. Add another possible twenty purchases over three days at Karaka and one might consider that perhaps syndication, in some areas, might have just about reached saturation point. What do others think.

Its a sign of the times..ready cash for extras is not available people are tightening their belts all over the world not just here.

Do you think that ultimately that will reflect in sale prices a bit further down the line, although there seems to be some increase in overseas buyers so maybe that will take up any slack.

Will wait and see but the Book 1 looks to have quite a long tail to it.

I'll be a naysayer and predict:

1] the average will be down

2] the median will be down

3] the aggregate will be down

Who disagrees?

Insider I think you are right. Progeny of Sword Of State will help boost the average. Fillies in Book 2 may struggle.

and therein (the fillies in Book 2) lies the bargains, me 'arties, says Max ... esp the ones wot are passed in or have a conformational imperfection or two

No more Singapore so it must translate to reduced demand in some way.

What will those who raced horses in Singapore now spend their monies on?

With Anti Money Laundering regulations (AML) been thrust in our faces despite always having been in place, perhaps those same people can get a helping hand to invest in horses in New Zealand to race and potentially also boast our Tourist Trade as well.

Have any of those people been approached to Sponsor Races in NZ to foster trade relations in other fields?

Some horses have been repatriated here and Oz but others went to Malaysia. Some owners will race them here or OZ but not to the same extent as previously for obvious reasons

Based on Service Fees and todays costs, it's a bloodbath.

I am glad that I have retired my last mare and only have them racing now with the fantastic stakes available.

N.B. Speaking as a breeder in this instance, not an owner.

In fact now is the very time to get into racehorse ownership, isn't Ted and Pheros?

I thought the micro-share ownership model may have taken off a bit more than it has, similar to the Sharesies model of share ownership... getting people excited on a smaller scale.  While watching Trackside over the weekend there was an advert selling micro shares so I went to see what it was all about..

$128 all in cost per 0.01%.  By my numbers that values the horse at 1.28m including all the usual expenses over its racing life.  Seems a bit excessive for a horse that was passed in at 30k in the sales.

Just so happens to be racing today and has won a couple trials so maybe it will give the owners a bit of fun, but (again by my rough calculations) your share of winning todays maiden will net quite literally a $1 return per micro-share.

It's a bigger rort than most of them , only one part of the equation making money .

I see the top value lot was by WOOTTON BASSETT who is often used by Coolmore out of a mare who ran fourth in your Derby in 2021 - this is presumably her first foal.

Dam is Il Affare, by Dundeel. 2 wins at 1600m, NZ$81,575, A$38,500, Counties RC Franklin Auctions H., 2d Counties RC Racing Festival 6-7th Feb H., 3d ARC Royal S., Gr.2, VRC Leilani Series Final, 4th New Zealand Derby, Gr.1, Waikato RC Sir Tristram Fillies Classic, Gr.2. Sister to Clever Man, half-sister to FULL OF BEAUTY. This is her first foal

Ever visited Wootton Bassett in the UK @stodge?

The name Wootton goes back to the early 1900's with Stanley, Frank and Richard who were all jockeys.

Frank rode 165 firsts, 143 seconds, 90 thirds and 376 unplaced horse in 1909.

Richard Wootton gained attention with the Wootton-Sievier ( Robert Sievier) Libel case in 1913 -1914 and tried to get "Winning Post" publication closed down before he withdrew his case.

Stanley who was an ex jockey was wounded in Military service in 1916.

He appears to have gone on to be a successful Horse Trainer and was originally from Australia who worked in the UK..

There was a Wootton family who were early settlers in Bombay, which is part of Franklin/ Auckland.

Maybe the new owners of Wootton Bassett horses can look up their contributions and name one of them after the family.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if surviving Woottons today purchased a Wootton Bassett horse at Karaka Sales and formed a Syndicate to race one?

I can't find the details (I found the horse but can't find any info about "RNZ Frac Club"), but $128k might be a touch light if meant to cover everything so your maths could be right. You'd hope the bulk of the $1.28m would go into the horses bank account (or a TD, with the interest paying the bills), never be spent, and returned at the end.

Like you I think the model could be a winner, but the devil is in the detail.

Insider had a wonderful post at the end of Day One.

Could you please post the statistics to the end of Day Three.

I have spent 75 minutes searching on the unwieldly NZ Bloodstock for the statistics.

Insider's help would be most appreciated.
