Cup day feedback?

Recommended Posts

I was only there the early part of the day and it seemed a lot better than last year. Other feedback I've seen and heard was mixed. Even Colin Wightman thought they'd done pretty well. Others were disgusted. I saw the men's toilets described as a health hazard, bartenders being able to be bribed for a 5 buck tip to serve more than the required two drinks, elderly owners that couldn't  get a seat in the owners stand for the feature race because of young intruders with four cans of drinks that didn't have a pass to be there. Some other owners that flew down saying they won't come back.Several saying that Addington Tuesday was way better managed.  Anyone else  go that has some feedback?

Iv'e emailed my nephew and his wife who were there for the day along with his brother and his wife.

Why have emailed one and no the other is that one is heavily involved with ownership but not the other.

My thinking is that the one involved in the industry  [ownership]  will give a more balanced account, rightly or wrongly.

Never made cup say, but did attend middle day, as expected a lesser crowd, and well behaved, for me who hasn't been there tor 5 or so years, and from a general public point of view, so much missed the public stand, no actual vantage point to see live races, to me watching the big screen and only seeing the last 100 or less meters, is not racing at it's best, I know it's a big course, but a advantage point to be able to use your binoculars and see how your horse preform, I feel the public have been left in the cold, even the highest point taken with private tents, the 30$ entry an 10$ race book I felt was steep, certainly won't be rushing back anytime soon, give me a country meeting anyday, where the action is close up and viewing so much better.

$10 race book? Did it already have the results in it....

They just never learn...if the public dont get enticed to these big days and feel like they had a good day out and not feel they got shafted then they will come back if not more people from the pool of possibles gone....but as long as the same people are doing the running of things then the same old mentality will exist.

We stopped going to the Waikato Cup about two years ago when the Te Rapa geniuses decided to erect hospo tents NEXT to the finishing straight fence, and high enough that your view is blocked from the main stand....

Here is the reality - the powers that be in racing are concerned about a small group of trainers, owners, and media sycophants. They are not interested in Joe public. That is why, outside of a few big days racing in NZ is a minority pursuit.

Yes I saw that.  The owners of the two favourites for the Guineas couldn't get seats in the Owners reserved seats because of the 5 rows of young barely legal pissed young folk.  None of whom had an onwers ribbon.

Weather turned out great after a few races. Smooth sailing getting in, didn’t have to wait long.
I found the on course entertainment was good throughout the course. Easy to watch the horses parade.
Racing was good!!

Whinges: Zig zagging drinks line seems to take an age unless you wanted Emersons from their trailer or the other options in that part. Prices were fine imo.
Standard issues using phone data made it hard to get a bet on, could get cash out so that fixed that but still hard to contact people.
Had read on here that racebooks were $10 so didn’t even look into getting one but it is something I’m going to email about. They are probably wanted less and less but nice to have.

As mentioned not great viewing for watching the races as you’re up on the rail. Maybe they replace the corporate tents on the hill with the temporary stands for the day?

So how is it the young peoples fault they were allowed in to somewhere they should not have been..thats what the men in white coats do, we should be encouraging young people to come to the races not berating them....if things stay the same soon just for the older folks soon racing will die with us.

Don't think anyone was blaming the young people per se, were they? Just questioning the club's management of that sort of thing on the day cf. the way Addington did on the Tuesday. Though young people, pissed or not, you'd hope might have the manners to offer a seat to elderly owners, especially if they knew they shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Not sure who Colin is but from the reports including that from Chitty above, the question is where were the men in white coats that you refer to and were they doing their job?

You know who you are Colin...please dont play games... ...and why is the young peoples fault if they were let in an area they were not supposed to be, easy to blame people when you dont have all the facts. If the security did not do their job it is not the young peoples fault...reports are second hand gossip mostly.

OK. You've mostly lost me. I got the impression that Chitty's report of that incident was first hand. The corroborating report that I got certainly was very first hand. I'd also give some credence to Leggy's usually accurate sources reported in the head post.

Well I was brought up to have manners.  The fact is there were no white coats and I'm sure if your horse was lined up in a Grp 1 you'd like to be front and centre in the designated area watching it!!

Leggy I give no credit to...the young people must be encouraged to come to the races and if the officials let them in then it is their fault not the young people.

Still not the kids fault if nobody told them they could not be there...maybe shouldn't have pulled the grandstand down.

At the end of the day @scooby3051 as you know it is an owner such as you that essentially puts the show on.  You pay the dosh, experience all the ups and downs, and for your brief time in the sun you should be afforded some privilege and courtesy.

Yes I agree but do not blame the patrons if the racecourse can not run things well and keep people where they are supposed to be, they were probably just looking for a good place to watch as well.

I think that's exactly the point that people are making about the management of the raceday.

Where did I blame the young people?  I was supporting the head post saying that things might have not been as well managed as Addington did it but interested in other views from those that were there.

Here we go Colin no wonder Leo kicked you out...you just know how to rub everyone up the wrong way. You were sticking up for Chitty and he was moaning about the 5 rows of young half pissed people there. I will not be debating you, you seem to be another leggy, no wonder you two get on so well.

The Canterbury and West Coast Owners' Association used to have an area in the public stand, lower level at the back nearest the winning post.  It was absolutely brilliant.  One could go to the upper deck for the big races.  And through some shady insurance deal they said the public stand was an earthquake risk.  That is such a pity as I would like to go back, but the Members' Stand would be too crowded and no grandstand means no Tauhei Notts.  The Cantabrians know their horses, love their grog and know that life is to be enjoyed to the max.

Some will call me weird, but the next South Island meeting I will attend will be Reefton.
