Following the abandonment of Saturday’s meeting at Hastings, NZTR has made the decision to move the 12 October raceday and Group 1 Livamol Classic to Te Rapa

Livamol Classic Meeting to Move to Te Rapa

Following the partial abandonment of Saturday’s meeting at Hastings, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) has made the decision to move the Saturday 12 October raceday and Group 1 Livamol Classic to Te Rapa. The move of the Group races is still subject to final Pattern Committee approval.

The Saturday 28 September Group 1 Arrowfield Stud Plate meeting at Hastings was partially abandoned following a horse slipping in the first race. Post abandonment work was carried out to the area of concern past the winning post and a set of jumpouts were held on Monday at the track. The jumpouts went without incident with several senior riders in attendance. A risk assessment was undertaken by NZTR management into, not only the safety of the track, but whether the industry could risk further damage should the worst happen given the tracks recent history.

“NZTR Board and management have carefully considered the remedial work that was completed on the track. After assessing all aspects of the situation, management believe it will pose considerable financial and reputational risk to the industry in the event of another abandonment at the same venue. Given the limited time to thoroughly test the track, the difficult decision was made to move the meeting to Te Rapa.” - Darin Balcombe, NZTR COO

“NZTR understand the devastating impact this will have on the Hawke’s Bay Club and region, and we will work with the Club over the coming weeks to provide support and identify a pathway forward.”

NZTR recognise the significance of this decision for Hawkes Bay Racing. However, the transfer will give industry participants certainty that a day of this importance to the industry can move forward without any apprehension.

“NZTR is committed to the long-term sustainability and safety of our racing operations and intend to return racing to the Hawke’s Bay.”

More information regarding the programming for the raceday will be announced in the coming days.

Finally a smart decision , bloody heartbreaking for the CD , but for surety to participants it was the only decision .

However I see no reason that it could not be kept in the CD , if no other Otaki would have been available and I don't see why this meeting could not have been run there .

I wonder if any consideration is given to the Southerners who are being sent all around the NI chasing some of these races. Afterall, three of tomorrow's WFA field have come from the South, one of the six horse open sprint and the top weight in the open stayers race. All well and good the Waikato horses just heading back to their own stables, but must get complicated for the Southerners. And the poor bloody Aussie. I bet they will think long and hard about coming back again.

I think both Otaki and Trentham were a risk at this time of year to get a bog track and the fields be decimated so that's probably why, that was the whole reason why the triple crown was given to Hastings, the better weather in early spring.... they need to bite the bullet fix the issues even if it means a long closure...that corner has been an issue for many years.

It has , but why ? it was fine for decades . IMO it's this introduction of manicured surfaces .

Apparently the moisture meter showed that that area was slightly drier than the rest of the track , was it that bad that it needed 3mls applied , just 3mls . 

Perhaps  someone can inform me whether it made that much of a diff if it had just been left alone .

I'm a bit slow, but it has just occurred to me that this was the same meeting that got moved to Matamata a couple of years ago. I think on that occasion they just moved a few of the feature races. So  no wonder NZTR were able to swing into action so quickly, they have had plenty of practice at moving this meeting.

Slightly different this time. As you say, two years ago they just integrated the feature races into the Saturday Matamata meeting. This time it's a standalone day with the remaining races.

I was wrong, thinking that an immediate fix was simple and they would be racing at Hastings.

My assumptions were based on the fact that they raced very successfully on the course three weeks prior and this was a man made problem.

Yes there may be a tiny bit of a negative camber if the rail is out, but it was going back in anyway.

But I repeat I got it wrong, at my reading of everyone in charge.

P.S. Iv'e checked out the long range weather for the Waikato and I don't like what I see!

I'm pretty sure I got something wrong on here once. I can't recall exactly what it was, but I'm sure someone will remember.

There is no possible way that any weather forecast you see this far away will be remotely accurate,

Besides that, when did you last see a meeting at Te Rapa abandoned?

Pete, I was simply inferring that a Group One normally run on a good to firm track will now most likely be run on a soft track. Nothing more, nothing less. 

Hopefully for the good of our International standing, I am wrong again.

Hmm. 2020 and 2022 runnings were both on heavy tracks.

A large proportion of European G1s are contested on rain affected tracks including heavy tracks , the Triomph is religiously run on soft or worse track , and the quality of that G1 is never questioned .

IMo our international standing in regards G1 performances isn't held in that high regard in the first place , any of our G1 horses have to frank that form in Aus to gain any respect . And to be realistic is it going to be a G1 quality field as we have known them ???

A comment from a casual punter and follower. In the 1970 s I worked at Awapuni with three generations of the Lord family ( Arthur, Ivan? Murray and Graeme. Three of us students were employed and our job was to remove hurdle and steeple fences , go over the track with rakes briefly on race day and thoroughly on the next day checking and filling divots. Also drove the water cart on days prior to race day but never on the last day before the meeting . I think we also harrowed lightly. The grass was never anywhere near as long as it was on Saturday and in my three years there was no slipping , no fall on the flat or postponements. Also I’m sure track was used more then for training purposes with more trainers based there

Perhaps a bit harsh Nomates? I think it's been established if the grass was shorter or had been mowed close to raceday the problem may well have been alleviated. All history now anyway, just back to the drawing board.
