Sharp n Smart

Recommended Posts

Really good run today, and I really hope he goes great in Melbourne. No doubt he's a top horse, but even though he has done more already than most horses ever do. I do worry that he throws in some shockers where you wonder if it's the same horse that had massive wraps on it earlier in it's career. However I would never doubt the Rogersons, I hope he shows his true ability.

Not sure I share your confidence in the Rogersons.

The worry with Sharp N Smart is that he had the guts raced out of him at 3. You can only go to the well so many times.

Having said that I'd obviously love to see him do well in the MC.

Yeah but they're giving him a soft prep , only 63 1/2kgs and a H10 to contend with today . I love the horse but I agree with you , that 3yo prep buried him and not too sure how much is left in the tank . He's not the first tho is he .

I hope I'm wrong .

My humble opinion is its a damn long way from getting beaten in a 1600m race on a bog to the first Tuesday in November...I dont think he will ever be back to the level he was at three...JMO

Agree 100%. They'd be better off targeting the summer races here but the trainer loves to aim high.

I must admit I find the whole Sharp n Smart situation quite strange. I was hoping we might finally have a top class male 3yo who would go on with it in subsequent seasons. Unfortunately, to be honest, he has been quite disappointing. He has hardly been trained like a champion race horse, as in being set a logical and well planned programme, admittedly that isn't always easy in NZ. Instead he seems to be set quite random races.

It would be nice to see him come back and kick on to big things, but you wouldn't want to be holding your breath waiting for it.

Totally agree. It would be a total miracle if SNS returns to his brilliant best, esp after respiratory problems (I think it was, something along those lines)..
After that great run yesterday I could almost hear Rogie preparing a spiel to camera along the lines of .." Cox Plate, Melbourne Cup and Hong Kong for Christmas" . LOL

Yep, I have this horrible feeling it won't end well, hope I'm wrong. Also found it weird all the presenters on Trackside were going goo gaa over a run where he ran 10th or something 🤔

I'm a bit surprised they're not sticking around here for the 1600m-2000m G1 races we have here over the spring & summer with some nice price money now on offer. I thought his runs over those distances at 3 were better than his Derby performances.

The Legarto bonus. One of the biggest wastes of money I have seen.

Tend to agree. A while off the winners list to be aiming that high but he's got $2m plus in the bank and they can't take that away from him.

I’ll put a dollar on just in case although I think that he was crucified last year so probably my $ is wasted. Having said that, I have seen glimpses of his former ability this time around.

I did exactly that after his first-up run at Te Rapa. For the horse's sake I hope he comes good. Should be at 200-1 at this stage, though.

Master trainer, a very good pony and looks like he is on the up and brought back in Barts timing

Worthy of a speculate for sure, a real chance for mine …. Get on I say.

Braver than me I am afraid. Not sure how that run indicates he is 'on the up'.....Master trainer? Hmmmm....Horse is done for mine. Would happily lay it at 8/1 for Mcup.

Bart Cummings used to say a good Melbourne Cup prospect needs 10,000m in lead up races to be rock hard fit and ready for the big one.  Dont think it happens much these days but could SnS really handle a campaign like that?  Will be interesting to see what races they target through October, and how many they think are necessary.

Well I think that would have to be the end for this his. He's definitely not the same horse and deserves retirement IMO

Totally agree. Has never looked the same horse after that gutbusting three year old campaign.

I hope they do the right thing by him. He owes them nothing.
