Ellerslie Track update

Recommended Posts

I sincerely hope they've got it right but the words in this press release are almost identical to last time.

"Yesterday Ellerslie hosted a successful set of jumpouts for Auckland-trained horses, with 70 horses running against the rail and 28 outside cones on the course proper.

This event marks another significant milestone in Auckland Thoroughbred Racing’s (ATR) preparation for their upcoming racing season.

Feedback from stakeholders, including the Racing Integrity Board (RIB), was positive regarding the track’s performance. ATR management remains confident that the track is on the right path for an exciting and successful season.

In a further commitment to ensuring top track conditions, ATR and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) flew in Flemington track manager Liam O’Keefe for a detailed review. After his inspection yesterday afternoon and this morning, O’Keefe commented, “It’s very pleasing to see the progress the track has made since my last visit in May. While I was here, we developed a maintenance plan aimed at improving traction for horses. It is clear, after observing the track following the jumpouts, that the maintenance plan is working effectively, allowing horses to penetrate the profile and thus providing safe racing conditions.”

ATR CEO Paul Wilcox echoed these sentiments, stating, “We are naturally pleased with the renovation work that’s been done, and the feedback we’ve received indicates we are right on track. The expertise and guidance provided by Liam, alongside Chris Hay of Tasmania, have been invaluable in achieving these results.”

Looking ahead, trials are scheduled for Tuesday, 10 September, with jumpouts for Open horses (outside cones) set to commence immediately after the trials."

Is this narrative any different from what we have been served up on several previous occasions? Like most other racegoers I too am looking forward to attending racedays at HQ but until we hold a full tote meeting with full fields, run at race pace and without any problems I'll view this report with little more than a cursory glance.

What I don’t understand is….”while there is rain around, why aren’t they really testing the track properly with heaps of trials and a raceday as soon as possible?
Everything they have said relates to the horses getting their hooves into the ground so what better time to try that than now, with all the moisture around”

Was about to say the same thing - we could almost mirror these same quotes with the ones they were saying 9 months ago.  I hope they get it right this time.  But I am happy to wait and see.

Jumpouts Successfully Staged at Ellerslie as Track Preparation Progresses

3 September 2024

Looks pretty good out there. When are they going to test the inside of the track that will be raced on?

I'm worried that they had to fly in Liam O'Keefe from Melbourne to inspect the track. Makes it sound like they are not confident in their own assessment and there is no mention of the Strathayr experts in this.

First meeting there on the 21st isn't it? That seems to be cutting it fine if the racing surface remains untested.

No problem , they can just xfer to Avondale , oh wait ! OK then xfer to Te Aroha , oh hang on that doesn't work either .

Let me get back to you .

Meeting News

September 29 Meeting Now at Woodville

The meeting scheduled for Te Aroha on Sunday 29 September will now be at Woodville. The programme, with minor changes, will remain the same. This is a jumps meeting and with Te Aroha still unavailable it needs to move to this venue.

That's the strange bit for mine.....the lack of Strathayr experts called in. Yet expertise on surfaces more akin to the old Ellerslie surface are flown in instead? I'm a kazillion miles away from being an even an armchair expert, but it all seems a little weird to me.

Mate , I'm talking about serious racing , not a  minor jumps meeting , the reason this meeting was xfered .

Plus I'm being tongue in cheek .

The other thing that is a bit mysterious is that they are using it at the beginning of the peak spring period for grass root development when root development was supposedly the problem.

Woodville seems to be the go to?

Who would have thought 5 or 10 years ago that Woodville would become the centre of jumps racing in NZ. Or even 5 or 10 months ago. Can't be too long until the Northerns and Nationals will all be held there.

And to think Messara wanted to close Woodville down.

You would have to wonder how much growth would have had a chance to take place over the winter...??? I thought that was what was needed??So I would think now would be the time for the growth spurt...would it not??
