Australia’s greatest sprinter, the unbeaten Black Caviar, has sadly passed away after a short battle with laminitis.

The 18-year-old winner of all her 25 starts – 15 at Group 1 level – was humane euthanized at the Scone Equine Hospital in NSW on Saturday morning shortly after giving foal to a Snitzel colt.

Connections took to social media to confirm the death of the horse none could beat.

An emotional trainer Peter Moody, who was at Caulfield, said that the news of her passing hit him hard.

“You don’t think it affects you,” he said. “But you are being stupid not to think it doesn’t. It’s impossible not to get attached to most animals let alone one like her.”

Moody explained there was no chance of saving the fastest horse Australasian racing has ever seen.

“She had a milk infection about a week ago and we just treated it like you do with all broodmares, But, like a lot of treatments, it went straight to her feet,” he said.

“Basically, it killed her feet.

“She had the foal this morning, a colt foal by Snitzel and they put her down shortly after that on humane grounds.

“They scanned her feet yesterday and there was no blood flow at all to her feet. There was minimum blood flow to her feet anyhow but there was none and she’s such a big girl.

“I rang all the staff and told them. They were all very upset.”

In all, Black Caviar had 25 starts over a four-year period from April, 2009 through to April, 2013.

She won in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and famously in front of Queen Elizabeth at Royal Ascot in 2012.

Black Caviar amassed almost $8m for connections.

Did I hear right? In the wash up at Ruakaka, Rodley mentioned the passing of B C to which Leith replied " probably the best mare we've seen for ten years." That's what it sounded like to me and so I wondered where he's been for the last ten years.

Yes I heard it too and was flabbergasted. “Probably the best mare we have seen for 10 years” Well actually it was more than 10 years ago (but it doesn’t seem like it) but best in 10 years?
My guess is that he was caught on the hop and it simply came out without the opportunity to really think about it.
In this instance I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

The sad Black Caviar story has taken another immensely sorrowful turn with the news her Snitzel foal could not be saved.

The connections of the sprint superstar, who was humanely euthanised on Saturday morning after a short battle with laminitis, confirmed the final foal of the unbeaten mare has also passed away.

"The owners are saddened to advise that Black Caviar's foal, a colt sired by Snitzel, passed away last night (Monday)," the statement said.

"He received around-the-clock, world-class veterinary care, but unfortunately could not be saved.

"The ownership group would like to thank the entire veterinary team who dedicated their time and efforts to caring for Black Caviar and her colt.

"The ownership group would also like to acknowledge and thank the Australian public and the racing public globally for the many tributes to Black Caviar.

"She was much loved and admired."

You do wonder why they decided to continue breeding from her at the age of 17.

Maybe a decision they might be regretting right now.

😪

Somethingroyal had Secretariat at the age of 18, it's always a hard thing to know and to map out how things will eventuate.    I like to think as Pegasus does, they are together :)   bless.

Very sad news to hear of the death of both the dam and the foal.

BLACK CAVIAR's visit to Ascot was the stuff of legends. I was posting on another site back then but it was one of the biggest discussion points we ever had  - BLACK CAVIAR vs FRANKEL.

She won the Diamond Jubilee over 1200m four days after he had won the Queen Anne thrashing EXCELEBRATION by 11 lengths and you don't get many championship races over a mile won by that kind of margin.

There was talk over here of setting up a match race and if someone had put up £20 million it might have happened. MY view is she's have beaten him over 1200m and he'd have beaten her over 1600m but a 1400m straight course race - well, it would have been something. I'd have been on FRANKEL for what little that's worth.

Luke Nolen of course almost made the ultimate mistake but she got him out of trouble.

Don't forget the second, MOONLIGHT CLOUD, was no mug. She turned out to be a champion from 1200-1600m. Having just failed to beat BLACK CAVIAR. she won the Maurice de Gheest at Deauville. She was then stepped up to 1600m to run a close fourth behind EXCELEBRATION (a clue there perhaps?) in the Marois but then won the Moulin. She failed in the Breeders Cup Mile as the ground was probably too firm.

In 2013, she won the Maurice de Gheest, the Marois and the Foret - in the Foret she slammed a certain GORDON LORD BYRON (who some of you will remember) three lengths. Her final run in Hong Kong was below par. As a broodmare she's thrown one or two decent ones but nothing special as yet.

We would have loved to have seen WINX at Ascot - it would have been so special - and in the likes of CHOISIR, TAKEOVER TARGET, NATURE STRIP, ASFOORA and others, there have been some really good Australian runners who have performed with real credit at the Royal meeting but that 2012 meeting, to have both BLACK CAVIAR and FRANKEL at the same meeting, was something special and never to be forgotten up here.

Black Caviar's laminitis was NOT caused by putting her in foal, it was actually caused by the treatment for Milk Disease.  It went straight to her feet, and affected the blood flow to her hooves.

What caused the milk disease?
