tripple alliance 1,240 Report post Posted June 23, 2024 Retired racing greyhounds are headed overseas as the industry looks to find homes for its backlog of dogs. They are being sent to the United States, rather than waiting to be adopted in New Zealand. As of early June, 44 greyhounds have made the trip to new homes in the US. Gone mad 44 grey hounds to the USA for rehoming why not drop them off to the council they know how to handle dog problems G

Palliser 1,224 Report post Posted December 10, 2024 The industry had more than enough chances to up their game. But showed no balls when it came to getting rid of the cruel buggers, cheats and so on. Then just twiddling their thumbs for years when it came to dog welfare, safety and rehoming. Thanks very much to those that have helped with this demise NOT. I'm buggered if I know how they are going to carry on while gradually easing out ? .. industry participants, owners and trainers are likely to just walk. What about the purpose built tracks and facilities ? It's a logistical nightmare. There is no incentive for anybody to carry on during a phase out. How on earth can they rehome the hundreds and hundreds of racing dogs, let alone the already retired dogs. The government are going to have to contribute hundreds of thousands of taxpayers money to assist I would think. canon47

Unfortunatly, most of the people that pushed for change left or gave up and those in charge have been to gutless to make necessary changes required. The stuff they have implemented the past 3 yrs needed to be implemented a decade ago and they failed. While they have somewhat improved welfare, they still let trainers breed 100s of dogs by themselves which is ludicrous. This wont go the same way it did in Aus either because GRNZ have killed the large majority of grassroot trainers out of the sport. lad27 and Palliser
canon47 113 Report post Posted December 10, 2024 Gosh you doggie people speaking up NOW on this great forum Sorry guys you have missed the boat. The writing was on the wall over a year ago ALTOUGH I did think straight racing was goig to save the day for at the least another 5 years me wrong. I'm not anti dog racing but How much weight was there behind the ban was because of the way the industry appears to treat dogs with broken hocks and toes etc the Greenies have said the its cheaper to put them down rather than treat and then retire the dogs

Yep, because GRNZ took too long to sort out the cheats and cruel buggers, and as a consequence the grass root trainers just couldn't compete. I owned a few dogs back in the day, and I remember my trainer getting really upset if any of their dogs got hurt. We had a really good sprinter once which ran fastest time when winning it's heat for the final. My trainer said she won't win the final, told me there were three or four dogs that will improve several lengths in the final, and it won't be natural improvement. Sure enough our dog ran her heart out for 4th beaten by 2 dogs she beat easily in the heats. I gave up on the dogs after she retired to my trainers couch. Most had already given up the fight as those in charge didnt care/did very little. The actions of the past 3 years came to late. I think whats also concerning is that National and NZF voted for this ban to. What happens when the activists start coming for the horses. Ive already seen alot of comments saying thouroubreds are next.
