Bill took Speed Legend to Auckland before the Wanganui Heat, unfortunately Speed Legend did not make the final.
I always think its a good idea to give the dogs a look at the track before the finals, but its up to the trainers to make that call.
I think it is a great idea to have the heats at different tracks, meaning the best from each region can make it into the final (or the lucky ones in the heats)
I wouldn't want it for any of the bigger Group 1's, but for the minimum Group 1, great idea.
Would be like each region having heats at their tracks for a final between them - eg (Auckland & Waikato - Final at Either - Manawatu and Wanganui, and Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill) 
 
As for coverage, I thought it was good.

All dependant on each case.
I think it would be as follows.
 
50/50 - No charge, trainers keep vouchers.
Training Fees - Charged to Owners, Owners keep vouchers.
Training Fees - No charge to owners for travel - Trainers keep vouchers.

Hand times should NOT be included in the official books. Website, form guides, anywhere where times are important they shouldnt be there. Gives the punters false info.

Lower Class dogs, when they jump into big race heats, with dogs with the same ability usually find trouble, as down the grades, they look like superstar jumpers, but up against not so classy jumpers.
 
In a C1 race, you could jump 3 lengths clear, get in a c5 race, and jump in the group if not further back.
 
Don't restrict to class, but maybe selection by club for special circumstances, as I wouldn't want my dogs in these group heats to get taken out by juniors.

I dont know a hell of alot about greyhounds, but thrasing a dog whether it be fast or slow, is not the way to get success.

Trial times are different to racing times and style. Im sure if this dog was going to make it to C5 - Karen and Gary wouldnt have sold him.

No idea, but if she's that concerned about her and other dogs safety then what other options do they have?

I'd be more concerned about the amount of dogs being bred out of known fighters / non chasers than trying to have their dogs in its preferred box draw....

I wouldn't mind seeing something implemented for the odd feature race where heats are run where the fastest qualifiers get to pick their box draws.
