  1. Leggy I'm interested that you've assumed so much from what I've said in one or two posts that you think you can pigeon hole me to that extent. All I said - and I stand by the statement as it is true - is that the beneficiaries of the funding is not the clubs per se but the owners of the winners of the races. BTW we're not discussing the Winston bribes or the Kelt or other irrelevant exceptions - where talking about a scaled model that tries to link race class (and horse class) with stakes. That hardly seems like a hanging offence to me. Leggy, I'm sure you're familiar with the Pastafarian argument that global warming etc is the direct result of the decrease in the number of pirates: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PiratesVsTemp_English.jpg In other words, correlation does not equal causation (as Wikipedia puts it). The broader underlying issues are that we are an industry in decline in a country in decline. I agree entirely we need to grow revenues - the lack of which is the real issue. Likewise, the issues in NZ date back to the 1980's but the failure to accept that things have changed have lead us to the position we are now. So effectively, you seem to be saying that there shouldn't be a standard funding model and that clubs should set there own stakes. I'm happy to see the size of the pyramid adjusted to fit our budgets but can't see why you would oppose the model. The irony of course is that the successful country events and CATR show that stakes does not have a direct, linear relationship to turnover. It's the quality and timing of the event that matters.
  2. I'm simply pointing out that I read your original statement to imply the money was going directly to the clubs when it's going to the owners, via the clubs. The issue is not rorting as you have but whether we should have minimum stakes for G&L races which are funded by the industry. If we do - and I don't think most would argue against such a model - then there has to be a level of redistribution. However, this impacts on the owners, not the clubs who get the $$ in one hand and pay it out to owners.
  3. Particularly under the current model, funding and stakes are effectively transfer payments - they go from the industry to owners through clubs. You're implying that the small clubs are being rorted for the benefit of the large clubs. This is emotional blurring of the facts - very effective and the crowd will bay from the sidelines as you put the boot in. However, the reality is that at the least the bulk of the money is not going to the clubs but to the owners of winners of Group and Listed races. To get a fairer comparison (not that you seem to want to look at this dispassionately) you need to compare the level of industry payment with the level of stakes paid to owners.
  4. A case of regional politicking which hopefully won't be an issue with the new board so long as the Members' Council plays ball.
  5. As I understand it, the presenters take close attention to turnover by race. I'm not sure if they have explicit measurement performances that are monitored, but at the very least they are expected to spruik the betting. It's far more rationale to say - this race is a raffle, better to hold on until such and such a race later in the day. However, the current strategy appears very much about maximising turner by race - slots on 4 legs.
  6. I wasn't trying to imply that. There is a fixation with the "policies of the last seven years" yet the fundamental problems of declining revenues etc have been with us for the last couple of decades (allowing for the generalisations). My key point is that if you are looking for a sunny side to the storm, it is that people will start considering fundamental change as opposed to simply rearranging deckchairs which achieves little.
  7. In many respects, I think anyone who has been through a significant (and successful) change programme realises that the worse things are, the easier it is to get change. It sounds counter-logical but the worse things are, the easier it is to focus on the things that matter. However, IMO, the first thing that must happen is that there is an understanding of the fundamental problems facing the industry rather than simply pointing to the symptoms as many continue to do. With AB off home, let's hope someone has the vision to revisit the core of OneRacing - bringing the two industry bodies together. So if you want to be positive, the conditions for positive change exist ... ie people will finally accept the need for fundamental change.
  8. You mean like Future Shock? Who else remembers social studies lessons on what will we do with all our leisure time?? (BTW, the "correct" answer wasn't work either!)
  9. Here ya go Rumpers, a lesson on blackberries etc Did they have the Two Ronnies when you were a lad
  10. I note that OBC has used one of his OTHER accounts on Channel 2 to deny that he sent the original email. I understand that a recent case on Channel 2 someone was sprung faking abusive emails to OBC but I don't know if they every found or uncovered who was behind it.
  11. Like Fonterra (business model, not horse)??
  12. I agree that the science split is policy/funder compared to the health model which was more provider/funder. At the same time, the problem with the separation between NZRB and the codes is that what is best for a "wagering" industry (or at least the priorities) are not necessarily the same for the racing industry. I see scanning below that we both appear to agree that running control back to the codes is imperative.
  13. Sorry Leggy you've got me a little confused. All but one club voted for the change to NZTR governance suggesting that at least the clubs see this as a major problem. On top of that, the current funder/provider split between the RB and NZTR means that the industry is being held to ransom by the "wagerers" and their "products". After bagging the bejusus out of NZRB are you now saying that there wouldn't be improvements (for the racing codes) from merging the two industry bodies. Interesting, a similar policy vs funder split is being removed with MRST and FRST merging to combine MSI. Perhaps it's time to revisit the concept of merging the RB and the codes?
  14. Talking of related, what about those who own the horse! Rachel will feel like she is jinxed at the moment.
  15. While I do admit to taking my laptop to the races once or twice (I had reasons!!), the emergence of web-enabled devices (eg iPhones) means I wouldn't do so now. I place some bets via the phone and use it to check odds, results, balance etc It's another area where the technology is ahead of the racing game - I may be on course, but the club is not benefitting directly from my phone bets ... assuming I'm betting with the NZ TAB. I agree it's not a big problem at present but it's another example of how we need to plan for the future rather than think about what happened in the past.
  16. In fairness, a lot has happened in the last 30 years. I remember back in the early 1980s when Gisborne was one of the strongest centres for soccer ... I even went travelled from Ak to Gisborne to see the Chatham Cup around 1981/1982. It's not just racing that is struggling in some of these provincial areas and I don't see things getting any better in the future either. I do agree that a regional circuit on the East Coast Wairoa + Gisborne makes a lot of sense but that would require some planning and racing doesn't embrace co-ordination and planning!

    Otaki

Yep, it was a cracker day and great to see so many people on course. The RB deserves the brickbats it gets for the very many things it gets wrong. However, I haven't seen many people put their hands up and say they've done a great job with the Summer Festival and CATR. Sure they have the resources (which the industry can't control). However, these two events have made a significant difference to racing and with racedays that in many cases would otherwise be non-events. I fully accept that these events attract the traditional non-racing person. However, someone has to take responsibility for winning back the lost generations. The only negative from the day is that I doubt the traffic heading south would have appreciated the extra bottleneck at Otaki roundabout. Late scratching in the last due to traffic ... and they don't even have one set of traffic lights in Otaki And good to see horses winning from the front and the back ... even if I would have been happier if the back runner hadn't got up in the last
  18. From the report: http://www.nzracing.co.nz/Meetings/StewardsReport.aspx/38290 "ATAPI (J McDonald) was held up between the 450 metres and 200 metres. PINSOIR (M Cameron) was unable to obtain clear running in the final straight. DASHING DONNA (L Innes) was held up until the 150 metres." A lot happened during the race which is not unusual for a Group One with a lot at stake.
  19. A good point hesi! The club hasn't had the rub of the green in recent years. Two years ago, Daffodil ran in the Classic but didn't get the best of runs coming 9th. Her efforts in Oz countered for zippo in the eyes of the Graded Stakes Committee. BTW Altered Image ran a then track record winning in 1:32.50 on a Good3 track. Last year's field was much maligned yet the race ended up being somewhat of a form race. Handsome Zulu, Zarzuela, and The Hombre came out of the Classic but again it counted for nothing as far as the Graded Stakes Committee was concerned. The million stakes for the 200 Guineas has definitely affected the Classic altho ironically it may have helped. At least next year it will be more of a level field altho the point needs to be made the Classic is the only 3 yo Grp 1 that doesn't received additional subsidies. I think the crowds have been there the last couple of years - altho it was very cold in the pm last year. Keep in mind also the Club cannot choose to race on a Saturday so has to work doubly hard to get people on course. Regardless, it all comes down to the horses so thanks Paul, zzz and every other owner and trainer who supported the day and the proud tradition of the Classic.
  20. Actually a couple of dominant performances on the track and also a couple of excellent speeches from the connections of both black type races. Nice touch zzz putting in a good word for the Classic It also looks like the right horse won the Classic which should help with the Graded Stakes Committee, while the field for the Levin Stakes should also pass muster again with the right horse winning Hope the Sheriff enjoys the wild west tonight. Rumpers looked reflective today too.
  21. Interesting - I was told different when I rang phone bet!
  22. Yep, thanks for that advice although my actions would be considered in the IT world as those of a "user with a silent L". I've now set up a maximum unit bet to prevent this from happening ... the $5 % bet ended up $120 boxed trifecta Naturally, it would have been less of a problem if the horses had done the decent thing and filed in based on the order I needed. However, clearly the cancellation policy puts all the risk at the feet of the consumer.
  23. There is no way to cancel on line bets (he says knowingly after a small interest of a $5% trifecta became a $5 boxed trifecta!) The logic (if that's what it can be called) is that the punter has the option to confirm the bet. Lesson learnt ... and burnt! You are right that it appears old school paper in the hand is the safest way to go.
  24. In a joint decision between stakeholders, the Club and NZTR, the Gore Racing Club meeting schuduled for Sunday 10 October that was abandoned on Sunday morning has been transferred to Monday, 11 October. A further track inspection will take place at 6am, Monday 11 October. Horses that were scratched prior to Sunday, 10 October will remain scratched. Horses that were scratched on Sunday morning including ballots have been given the option of being reinstated.
