  1. The CJC should get behind this BIG-TIME: how about they offer free floating to/from the course and stabling for a week at the course? Imagine if they could attract a name Aussie Sprinter [Gold Trail, Lucky Secret?] and market it as a KIWI/ Aussie showdown....sell the TV rights..I reckon it would attract huge interest. Maybe as part of Cup Week in November?? Maaaaate ...it would go off!!
  2. About 7/1 I reckon - if it rains plenty the day before!
  3. No slight on your bloke intended Chris. He was well ridden and ran an excellent race. Congratulations! It's just that in fairness, Tell a Tale is probably a more talented horse than your bloke and on his last couple of runs, more was expected of him. But Old Spec was too good for them all on this occasion - and good luck to him and all your team!!
  4. To say nothing of his HUGE run for 4th time before last! I was disappointed with TAT's run too - he just seemed to take forever to really accellerate...when he does he can still pick them up pretty quickly, but still disappointing run. I thought it was his race to win.
  5. I don't think there's a horse in NZ that would blow smoke up him over 1,000m at Riccarton - but I'd love to see someone [or a few] try!!
  6. So if he'd dropped back and given him 10 lengths start into the straight he'd have accellerated past him right??!! NOT! When a horse like Mufhasa can run such a great tempo in front [ and are ridden by jockeys who can judge pace I might add] they are incredibly hard to beat. And after all, he broke 1:33 for the mile remember...
  7. Yes I heard him make that comment too - I assumed they must be good mates...
  8. You don't happen to work for Tui's marketing arm by any chance???? That's a real beauty!
  9. I would LOVE to see this sort of thing actually happen. I often wish I lived in the days of match-racing when two or three went head to head. Brings out tactical jockey skills and usually the best horse wins! I'd say Ray's money would be totally safe!
  10. You're a hard man to please Joblow! What had he done wrong on the horse? Nothing obvious to my eye - he was simply beaten by a better horse on the day - and I'm picking Purton won't make a blind bit of difference. Zarzuela will still beat him.
  11. Thanks Centrofold - interesting reading. I still think you'd have to agree that his form after the Derby wasn't anywhere near his form prior. 3 wins, [1 a progressive 1200 at Hastings and the best a G3] was hardly anywhere near a record-breaking G1 though! And that chart was a mess! Best 1600m time in a 1400m race??? Best 2000m time in a 1600m race???? What's with that???
  12. Yeah mate - I'll never forget that run! Just mind-boggling how superior he was that year. Took off at the 800m as you say, looped the field then ran away and hid in the straight! As for Zarzuela: breeding's a funny old game Hesi as I'm sure you know. For every rule there's an exception. I have found that you must still use some observation of the individual in your assumptions: their physique [who they look like on type] and how they run. Pentire, being a current example of a sire which throws both extremely fast horses as well as Melbourne Cup prospects. That's why if you're looking at a Pentire you can't assume he's either; you have to look at his physique and observe his style of racing and where his abilities lie. Is he/she a sprinter or a stayer? As I have said in the other post, I have observed Zarzuela and think she looks a real staying Zabeel type with a killer dose of class and ability to sprint hard at the close of her races. I certainly haven't seen any obvious indicators to date that she has reached her maximum distance. In contrast, Katie Lee has on a couple of occasions when hitting the front too early, started swishing her tail and showing obvious signs she's 'running on empty.' This makes me doubt her ability to run out a hard-run 2400m. To her credit she won last time in an incredibly courageous display. In conclusion I guess all I'm saying is, their breeding alone is not sufficient to make a decision on these two: both of us could well be proven wrong, as both fillies are extremely talented and courageous.
  13. I was measured by a doctor in my late 20's when I was riding regular work each morning. I weighed 60kgs and was described as 'very lean' with 7% body fat. I have always eaten anything and everything and 25 years later I still weigh 61kgs. Although my good wife long ago 'put her foot down' about riding work, I'd estimate the 'very lean' tag would still apply!!!! It just comes down to individual metabolism I think. I just consider myself very fortunate - in fact, blessed by God with good health all my life. And a good wife!
  14. You could be forgiven for thinking that it probably nearly killed him to run it! He never showed anything like that ability afterwards.
  15. Agree Freda - always loved a good rodeo! [Except at the track on a Monday morning!!!!] Really enjoyed Kaitaia rodeo this year - some awesome bucking horses and very capable riders too..
  16. Of course you are totally right Alan: however, I would argue in Zarzuela's case that she has thrown much more to the Zabeel than the Volksraad. I have also seen that in age group racing CLASS can carry them a long way. I well remember Snap a few years back making an ass out of my thinking that a horse by[ was it Kingdom Bay?] could not possibly run a strong 2400m!!! So we'll wait and see...with interest.
  17. Can't agree with you totally here Hesi. Insofar that we all agree 'there are no certainties in racing' - Zarzuela looks the next best thing. I was most interested to hear the comments of both teams in the papers since, which backed my own observation of the race. It appeared to me that both have improved since Te Rapa [ no surprises there] but that the filly always had the drop on the colt] and much as I like the look of the two that chased her home - I can't honestly see either of them improving more than her and beating her. Monaco Consul will be much harder to beat on a wet track - which is really the only way I can see her beaten. But we'll all have to wait and see won't we? It certainly looks like a great crop of 3yo's aye! Katie Lee I can't have over 2400m - although if she can stay covered up for a very late dab at them she might surprise. She is an incredible filly - but as someone else has already said, way too brilliant in my opinion. I'd be keeping her to a mile myself - but $2.2million is a big temptation for any owner - even one who doesn't need the money!
  18. HI Bruce - what a great days racing! Blue Diamond: 3 Beneteau 13 Psychologist 14 Shaaheq [ scr 2 Star Witness] Oakleigh Plate: 2 Lucky Secret 6 Starspangledbanner 3 Here de Angels [scr 5 Swift Alliance]
  19. With the stallions you have chosen here I presume you're breeding to race the progeny yourself?
  20. Thanks Peter - although Encosta de Lago has been HUGE as a sire!
