Yep - 100% agree with Chiknsmack on this. In my view, if/when Greyhounds fall - next target I would imagine would be Thoroughbred jumping events - so don't treat the closure of greyhound racing with too much glee if you like your racing!

Suspect it was a TAB game of "Where's Walley", and you are the winner Ted! Certainly a giggle... Didn't they run the Cauliflower Cup last weekend as well?

1860's South Island Jockeys - seeking an R. Ray
SingaporeSling replied to SingaporeSling's topic in Thoroughbred Cafe
Thanks Phar Lap. Like everything with Geneaology - it takes you down a rabbit hole often. My relation is the last Robert Ray above (Karamea linkage), but he was in Nelson at the same time as Bob Ray was riding horses (from early-mid 1850's onwards), so I had wondered if he had an interest on the side (besides teaching ha). Bob Ray (the jockey, and then trainer) died in 1905, and appears to be formally Robert Reay (in the records), but often recorded as "R Ray" in the press of the day. -
1860's South Island Jockeys - seeking an R. Ray

Brilliant Gubellini - I knew I was coming to the right place with this kind of question. Appreciate the quick reply, thanks. -
Okay, some serious race boffins and historians on here - so here is one that you may be able to help with. Does anyone know if/where any 1860's NZ jockey details/profiles may exist? Specifically, I am seeking the first name of an 1860s Nelson based (I think) jockey R Ray to see if he is my great-great-grandfather (Robert). I can find various articles from races in Nelson, Canterbury and Timaru referencing jockey R Ray, and the link to the Redwood breeder/stable from Nelson, but cannot identify his first name? https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NENZC18650211.2.8?end_date=12-03-1870&items_per_page=100&query=jockey+ray&snippet=true&sort_by=byDA&start_date=12-03-1850&title=NENZC Thanks for any help that anyone can offer. cheers, Singapore Sling
