  1. The only other serious case  that I can recall where there was a name suppression granted was those cops in Tauranga who were found guilty of rape and had their names suppressed pending a second rape case for which they were found not guilty. From memory one of the cops was called Schollum

One of the cases you refer to is the allegations by Louis Nichols. I think (and I might well be wrong) that Schollum and his mate did not have name suppression. What was suppressed was the fact that they had already been found guilty of a previous rape that was very similar to the alleged assault on Nichols. Another defendant, Clint Rickards (whatever happened to him?) had not been involved in the previous rape.

  2. My feeling is that Indonesia are an easy target. If they are going to be called out on their death penalty policy, then so should all countries who have the death penalty for crimes.

I also agree with Crusty. When in Rome you act like the Romans. That means when you go to Indonesia you don't arrange to export heroin to Australia. Those young men were aware that Indonesia had the death penalty for drug trafficing, but they were also aware of the huge profits to be made. They rolled the dice.

  3. She's always come across as a fairly well rounded sort of person and this donation of winnings just confirms that.

Even the comment she made about being interested in finding a boyfriend was quite endearing.

  4. Not doubting that there are "Elite Pakeha", but how do they currently benefit from NZ waterways, where Elite Maori could not.

My, possibly naive, way of seeing things is that - Should I have a small steam boat that I want to use to take tourists up the river or around the lake, I would go to the NZ Govt Dept or the local Govt authority, pay a fee, obtain a license and get on with it. That fee then goes toward maintaining the waterway and it's surrounds. If they are not maintained I then complain to the authority in question.

Both "Elite Pakeha" and "Elite Maori" could do the same - Couldn't they?

It's really all about who gets that fee, Isn't it?

  5. I see Beauden Barrett has put his hand up as wanting to go to the Olympics.

He would be the first player I would select. He has vision, skills, but most of all he has flat out speed. Both off the mark and over a distance.

  6. Couple of things worth noting here.

    1. Muliaina wasn't charged. - So what is, "normal practice when someone is charged", doesn't yet come into play in this case.

    2. There's no "Court action in process".

    3. He was arrested to be interviewed at that time because he would have returned to Ireland and thus been out of the British Police jurisdiction.

You've clearly got an axe to grind in relation to such cases involving sportsmen BeerwithDuncan. But you need to get your facts right before letting go with both barrels.

  7. I think we played our Final on the Tuesday against the South Africans.

Close game, passionate home crowd, huge emotional release when Elliot hits the six and then a victory lap.

Often happens in sport. The young brash upstarts, playing the exciting brand of whatever sport it is, subconsciously feel making the Final is what it's all about. Whereas the team that's been there before know they need to win the Final.

  8. Michael Brown the writer of WALK AWAY RENEE and a member of the band that recorded it,LEFT BANKE, has died at the age og 65 in New Jersey.

It reached number 5 on the billdoard charts and was ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as number 222 of the best songs ever written.

The FOUR TOPS also had a hit with it in 1968 ,2 years after Brown had written it as a 16 year old.

"Don't walk away Rene", a classic, no doubt about it.

  9. Some big hits and slams on the weekend

    1. Nonu on Fekitoa. That was as close to a shoulder charge as you could get. Nonu just got enough limp arm around to let him off.

    2. Cruden dumped on his head by the "serial bully" (to quote Tony). Looked bad at normal speed and worse at slow motion. Ref and Touchy thought so and red carded. they ignore 3rd umpire, who disagreed. Now Review panel say poor decision, tackle fine. What's Joe Public to make of that.

    3. The big Pommy lock blindsiding the little Froggy 1st Five. Looked bad, but Ref rules he committed. If that was Rickie McCaw tackling the English 1st Five in that manner at Twickenham would the Ref have seen it that way? I don't think so.

  10. Great theatre last night and in the 1/4 final in Wgton. U couldn't ask for more really.

The rain probably helped us but Torch makes some good points.

Not the first time that the Yappies have had fortune go against them in Cricket World Cup. It's becoming a bit of a theme.

We certainly want India to win the Semi against Aus. The Aussie crowd will fall in behind us, cause they don't like Kohli after the recent Test series.

NZ v India in the Final - there may even be a case for moving it back to The CakeTin in Wellington.

  11. The whole competition looks old and tired just like some of the players.

Not so sure about this comment. These players don't look "old and tired".

    Ben Smith

    Ma'a Nonu

    Conrad Smith

    TJ Perenara

    Jeremy Thrush

    Milner-Skudder

    Malakai Feketoa

    All the Highlanders forward pack

    Reggie Goodes

    Dan Carter

    Andy Ellis

    Noholo (he's an excitement machine)

    Kieran Reid

    Sam Cane

    Barrett's brother (from Canterbury)

    Damien McKenzie

    Hika Elliott

    Higginbottom

    Genia

Hooper (is he the worlds best open side right now? - I think he is)

    etc etc

Stick that in your Crusty old pipe and smoke it.

  12. To the Chief supporters who booed Marty Banks when he was lining up his penalty kick at the end of tonights game you are not sports fans you are MORONS.

Didn't appear to concern him to much Gubellini. Slotted it like a pro.

  13. I really expected the Blues to step up in this game. Both teams travelling over from Sth Africa, but with Lions with an awful record on the road, and Blues under the pump with much to prove. "Let's do it for Kevin, Lets do it for Sir John, Let's do it to prove our critics wrong". Plenty of motivation and I expected they'd run away with it. But they did not. What was their game plan? They just got worse as the game went on. In the end I was loving the Lions spirit and would have felt sorry for them had they lost..

  14. Can this ' war' be won? Its anyones guess how many people there are spread around the globe who can be 'activated' at short notice, the only way to stop this is by restricting the common denominator, religion.

My latest take is that the people (potential terrorists) spread around the globe are largely unknown to the terrorist organisations.

They become radicalised by way of the internet or local religious leaders preaching jihad.

They then act of there own accord. The Boston Marathon bombers would be one such example.

I wonder if we'll get any here in NZ? More chance of that, now we're off to fight the Crusade.
