That is when I stopped listening .... Racing is a sport more than a business !!
ffs - if it is a sport why are so many people taking 6 figure salaries  out of the 'sport' ?

Cunliffe and his wife clearly see it as his destiny to lead Labour out of the wilderness and into the Promised Land. The problem is that he does not have the personality to do so. The man is deluded. I actually think he might have a personality disorder.

The jazz man was most impressive at the trials before he raced and at the time I thought he looked to have the ability to make a good horse in time.  Unfortunately for him he debuted in  a race run at breakneck speed throughout and after a very hard run he ended up a very meritorious 6th. That run flattened him and he hasn't looked the same since.     If you look at  T G Butts udr for last season its actually not that far off what they normally achieve.  Its just there good horses such as Vulcan, Choice achiever  & ,Mah sish  all lost a leg last year.  The butts in my opinion have proved for  decades that they are the best trainers  in nz,possibly Australasia of  horses 5 year old and over.  Maybe its getting harder for them to get their hands on an untapped in ability horse that they can mould into the next  open class star. So many horses these days have had many a gut buster by the end of their 3yo season and never improve much, if at all after that.   There should be  no one doubting the butts  talent.

Gee.....this thread has taken a sudden turn ,it's now 'stick it to poor ol' Rumpers and his fellow lawyers.

Back to DW ,the BLichter article also suggests he was a mug facing the music without counsel.
Personally I don't know DW from a bar of soap but surely he deserved some help.

I think it irrelevant that he may have been a loner etc ,and the suggestions that financial woes may have been the result of excess pokies use I think is unfortunate.

What was he thinking ??...a jockey of 20 yrs even may not be prepared for the disciplinary hearing he faced....did he even think of the penalties etc.??
He should not have faced the music alone.

A despicable act by jockey for sure , but I feel very little explanation given for his actions and I find it very odd that he decided to face the very serious charges alone .
Surely he would have been better served had he been represented.
I agree that all the TV publicity etc gave the RIU their day in the sun.....pity the Bain trials adjudicators weren't so sceptical of some of the evidence.
Where was this jockeys support ???...every thug, rapist and murderer seems to come up with references and detailed history of what may have gone wrong with the accused wiring.

And Rumpole ,you seem to be keen to slip in a possible Pokie problem....is this a fact....and you say he earned over $85k plus suggesting this is plenty, maybe he has a huge mortgage ????
You have represented thug jockeys beating up shop owners..JRD.....and other racing folk in deep ,I'd expect you to show a bit more empathy.
Get behind an appeal and show your worth.....or would MMcKechnie scare you ??

Haha......all good stuff , over 60% prefer John as our Prime Minister.

Maybe we / they prefer someone who has lived a bit , worked his way thru qualifications and job experience {incl in a Harness Stable},
understands currency , overseas business ,then worked his way up in NZ politics defeating one of NZ's most respected PM's.

    Who are the alternatives.....???

Anyone can buy shares in the Bank of America ,dabbled in a few myself when they were less than US $6 in 2011.

David Walker has been held accountable for his actions.

Industry leaders have appeared very willing to talk publicly about the matter throughout - both after and before (sub judice) the hearing.  Walker has been roundly and publicly condemned.

Moreover - while courting the media and piling on the opprobrium when it comes to Walker - they have sought to garner respect and kudos from the whole sorry affair - saying that it shows how good their RIU systems are etc - giving themselves big pats on the back - aren't we clever boys etc

Somehow it feels a bit rich to this low-level industry participant.  Where is their accountability? -

    - for their massive salary packages?  For their expensive, failed initiatives? (aka hare-brained schemes) For the lack of progress in advancing the ndustry (or even stopping the rot ...)?  For failed executives who leave under clouds with no formal explanantion - despite the massive cost borne by us, the stake-holders?  For the lack of change in their appointments processes/management structure - meaning we are destined to lurch from one over-rated, over-paid, under-performing failure to the next.

No explanations - no mea culpas - no belt-tightening - no-one being held to account.

    Just more of the same.

And they have the audacity to indulge in self-congratulatory media statements because they managed to take down one journeyman jockey who cheated in about the most glaringly obvious way you will ever witness.

How can anyone even try to compare Mick Guerin with Duane Ranger? Michael Guerin is a witty racing guru while the Lone Ranger is 'a do gooder' with extremely limited racing knowledge and a face and dress sense that is best suited to radio. Duane is passionate I'll give him that much but I think he is perfectly suited in his current position as Mick is in his!

A majority of Kiwis think any betting on racehorses is morally corrupt.

Head to head betting is probably the only growing type of betting in NZ.

Before you reply and diss me think about it......most betting on Sports like Rugby ,Soccer ,Boxing ...all big in NZ , is built around H2H.

Team sports you say.....but speak to any bookie with world wide experience and they will tell you of the many "unusual" results that arise from H2H betting...and many are around individual sports especially tennis[ below the elite level].

Where you have a 2 man contest ,it has to be the easiest bet if one party is not trying.......a lot of cricket bets are in fact H2H .
Cricket rorts have been around for 20 years or more ,but still the punters line up...yet they know the odds !!!!

First stoppage or scoring option at rugby /league......did that option cease after the attempt to cheat in NRL in recent years??

Racing scams/rorts/fraud  etc have been around since it started.....ring-ins ,painted legs etc , photo-finish didn't exist for decades.
People recall with pride how people were deceived, bookies fooled etc.

The punter is always looking for an edge ,legal or otherwise to make a quid.......in recent times people have bet on races after the race won and the result known.

All morally corrupt carry-on , but people continue to bet even tho they know the odds.

H2H betting is a growth opportunity ,it gives newcomers some idea how they can win ,supplement their income.

They can bet on the All blacks @ $1,40 or the Wallabies @ $3.50.
Then they can get a horse @ $1.85 to beat just one other horse , a lot easier to understand than a trifecta ,quaddie or triple trio on big fields on a bog NZ winter track.

Or they could bet on the Jockeys challenge.....the mind boggles !!!!!

Well RK, quite an unnecessary post and a bit rude !!!

The rules were laid out at the start and it is a format that Bruce ,who does great work with these comps ,has used in the past.

It does lead to close finishes and rewards consistent picking.

Noting two names as deserving better ,is rather pointless as there was only going to be one winner !!!

I note the winner picked 4 winners from six races ,very good indeed , form that will stand him in good stead for final .

    So good luck to him.

    And thanks again to Bruce.

I find it interesting that there seems a good deal of support for this jockey ,who it appears has shown at best ,gross stupidity,  at worst serous 'fraud'.
Folk blaming the TAB for betting option etc etc.
This is strange considering other horseman get crucified on here for a bad ride ,a wrong split decision etc....weird !!!!

It goes to show......the criticism toward Harness racing maybe a bit unfair. Plus the criticism of the RIU maybe a bit unfair.
Maybe even the constant criticism of the TAB ,who are allowing these betting options to try and keep up with the much lauded overseas  betting options....??

A shame that the Racing industry cries out for mainstream TV coverage , gets this type of coverage which just confirms what 90% of the population feels about racing.
And on the same night there is a positive story about the upcoming Group 1 and the O'Sullivan clan.

Why are you feeling sorry for this jockey ,when clearly his actions appear to be so damaging to the Industry.

The crop you quoted were a handy bunch, but with the possible exception of Hilarious Guest, not a standout amongst them. Certainly nothing that would make anyones "Top 20" list.

Pretty much every year produces a dozen 3yo's that would have gone on to cup class in the old days. But since getting to "cup class" hasn't been the aim of the game for the past couple of decades, it's hardly an indicator of anything anymore.

The posts to date re this comp appear a bit negative.
They need the churn of the race by race betting to ensure they get some turnover increase to justify the prizes etc. ,so obviously no pick 6 etc.Slight change to conditions to rid the glitches.
But this comp seems an opportunity to create interest ,increase turnover and it offers a good prize.

Methinks that it should be embraced as something worthwhile.

Doom and gloomers ,no need to enter !

The rollercoaster ride is coming to a close, another season in the balance, another season where you hear the commentators saying" well they should win this game but you never know after all it is the Warriors".

This weekend the Warriors play the premiers the Roosters, is this game about well we will see just where the Warriors are at, I doubt it there mindset isn't at the level that's required to win this game, the Roosters go forward through Moa and Hargreaves should be too much for the Warriors.
Lillyman has been consistent and Mannering always gives his best, but the others need to step up to the plate, we rely far to much on Konrad Hurrell and runs from Vatuvei for go forward, Matulino needs to watch the video of Jessie Bromwich and see how its done.
The top 4 is down to 5 now, Manly, Souths, Roosters, Penrith and the Cowboys, you can forget a top 4 finish for the Warriors, the Knights game was a danger game, but the danger signs were there from the week before against Cronulla, and the boys carried that form into the Knights game.
For the Warriors a top 8 spot is very questionable, it will no doubt come down to round 26 against Penrith, the Warriors will be playing this game to secure a spot in the Semi's and Penrith may well be playing this game to secure a top 4 finish and a home semi, I know who my money will be on (I've always loved you Ivan )
South Sydney have raised the bar heading into the Semis, where the Warriors are in freefall.

I'm interested to know some of the courses they do  enforce this on.   In the last year have travelled around lots of courses, helped trainers  out in stable area, led horses around etc.  I don't have a stabelhand's licence as yet,  but there isn't one course I've ever been questioned at or stopped . Just bowl along, look the part,  and they let you in any time during the meeting. They always say it is a silly law that even those in charge ignore.     You either enforce it or do away with it altogether..  It is the inside areas I find that present problems while outdoor ones like Avondale are fine for any one that has modicum of " horse sense "

tasman man 11 reacted to Uriah Heap in Super Rugby Final
Well it will affect my life because I will not have my Cantab supporting mates crowing about it for the next 9 months. So that's a good thing. Plus the NSW victory should provide Super rugby with a far bigger boost than it would have got should boring old Canterbury have won.
But that is not the point. Debate needs to continue because we don't want Ref's deciding Grand Finals.
Refs can find a penalty for either team, at any ruck, if they of a mind too. He could have just as easily penalised the Warratah. "Player on the ground must either get up, pass or release the ball" says the rules. That fellow did none of those. He turned his body and moved a metre off to the side. "Penalty Red"

In such circumstances, we need Refs to be certain and preferably just put the whistle away. Just as Ref Joubert decided to do in the final three rucks, each of which NSW sealed off, by goin off their feet, in fine Southland style.
