Reminds me a bit of someone who calls the shots on a disgrace of a Facebook page which masquerades as being for Harness Racing Owners.
Oh, wait. Isn't that you, Neil?

WAP....dunno where I referred to any of your All Star posts/opinions.
Opinions are just that but when facts get skewed on a thread , it does no harm to try and get things sorted.
Southland Harness never really interested me .
Good to see you have me as a 'black booker' and follow my history.
    Have a great 2019 !

Good to see a 'small time trainer' still there giving it a crack and it did little to distract from the event.
3200m stands are not too common these days and many horses wouldn't cope with it at 4min pace.
We entered a horse in a group 1 race recently and it finished last after a tardy beginning. Do I regret ?......NO.
In the 2009 Invercargill Cup worth much more stake-wise several horses were tailed off ,with the favourite Nearea Franco finishing last ,dropping off alarmingly at 800m.It just wasn't her day.
It's a while since I watched any Invercargill trots but it was noticeable how badly some well favoured runners fared yesterday and how well some outsiders ran.
A couple of the races  watched were farcical, particularly R5 won by rank outsider Annie Fitz. After a check at start there were some 6 occasions when horses broke for little reason ,rare in a pacing race.
Someone mentioned there could have been a wind issue !
The race was not a good look for Harness , plus the time of 2min 50 + added to the farce.

Dunrobin received $640 for finishing last in this race. If he had started in his own grade he would have received $200.
Think trainer was just proving a point about some of the discrepancy in this pay losers system!

A couple of points to add to the discussion.......
IMO Racing has never been as 'honest' or closely scrutinised as it is now.
Racing is a  bloody boring activity which only true lovers of the noble horse enjoy ......even trainers I know would prefer to be at home just watching it on TV , in fact most trainers and owners don't attend meetings if they are not involved on the day.
Yes the industry is declining ,because people prefer to gamble on more interesting alternatives which were not around in the good old days when Racing was 'dodgy' in the extreme.eg Casino ,Sports betting and Lotto.
People love coming on social media and Racecafe and rubbish with envy most successful people in racing........the same folk seem to relish the prediction that the Industry will end.
And those closest to the action i.e. recent participants , threaten that they are walking away yet they still bet and show an interest yet can't give any positive recommendations how to resuscitate the Industry. In fact those closest i.e. administrators ,owners ,trainers etc belong to groups that can't put forward any solutions or agree !
Many sports have faced huge shrinkage in participation and public interest and some are showing revival......I went to a 20/20 cricket match last week......and how us cricket enthusiasts rubbished this format when it started.
On one side of us a guy was asking how many fielders a team was allowed ,and on the other side of us the group commented that none of them had been to the cricket for 5 years.In front some women stood and danced and waved their arms around constantly.
I thought how cricket had changed......and these people had paid good money for a day out to be entertained.

Fair dinkum Jack.....it's just plain silly to even partly blame racings loss in popularity to  horses such as The Fixer entering races when not fully fit or not primed to win or place !
For various reasons , even in group races , many horses will not be capable of winning or running up to their very best form.
In last few weeks I saw Temporale barely complete a race when well fancied then a few days later come out and win a good race. It had an off night. A friends horse after winning a few modest race here because trainer said it was never more than 85% fit ,was sold to the USA where it could race with medication and it stepped off plane and won 7 from 8 !
Last night I watched two of worlds top tennis players compete in matches where they were clearly injured ,I bet huge money changed hands on those games.....Ditto in Boxing ,where anything goes the betting is huge and growing . These two 'horse races' where its so easy to tank are among the fastest growing betting events....its gambling !
Feel welcome to give me my pedigree...yes I'm one of those !

Paul Shailer is laughing. Going great guns. As for Stakes, Qld is the poor cousin in Stakes compared to Syd and Melb but is making progress. On Wed I have an interest in a filly starting at Doomben in a fillies 3yo maiden. The stake for the “winner is $14,000 plus there’s a QTIS bonus of $8500 to the winner if QTIS registered - which most are. So if we win, we get $22,500. If NZ think their Industry can survive on $10k or less Stakes, then they are kidding themselves. They need to generate more income and spend less on overheads. The overhead absorption of funds is ( imho ) too high.

It seems you were trying to be cute trying to pick the trifecta in one !
I decided to watch the main Cambridge races , so also decided to have a very small trifecta and first four......and got both !
It was not rocket science to pick the winner in ONE.....arguably NZ's top horse with the ace draw.
And Star Galleria ,another top sprinter with tactical gate speed seen as the big danger should he try and grab the front early.
Then there was The Fixer ,  NZ cup winner ,fresh up with the outside draw........like the winner ,lightly raced plus mainly stand start history , maybe a little below others in not only fitness but in ring craft as well.
Without searching for info ,I read at least twice that The Fixer would need the race therefore it was highly unlikely he would be used up mid race to get handy.
Mark Purdon stated that his drive should win ,The Fixer probably wouldn't ,ditto Natalie. Plus Mark Purdon stated the 3rd horse would go well and be in the fight.
Not quite from the horses mouth ,but next best thing .
I took the 3 x purdon horses for 3rd and 4th as they rarely run badly.
Now you can scream and shout that The Fixer should have been driven with more urgency but the 2 x main chances came first and second and the rest finished roughly where they should have.
Very hard to pick a trifecta in one.Had The Fixer drawn 1 or 2 with no second row The Fixer would have been 3 rd.
It wasn't fit ,primed or screwed down !

I for one agree with Tasman Man. When I give a horse to a trainer I intend that the horse will be good enough to compete at Alexandra Park or Addington. If it was only good enough to race at a grass track meeting at Te Aroha I wouldn't bother keeping the horse in work. I would sell it to Australia for as much or as little I could get for it

    Sorry,
I think you misguided in your thinking.
It's obvious the meetings are complementary and the numbers OK.
The grass track meeting has an Amateurs race and a Junior drivers race.
Those two races add 20 horses.
Cambridge has a Group 3 trot and a Group 2 pace ,plus a 3 yr old race with rating 60-75 made up of horses not interested in the grass track.
Put these FACTS in the blender and one can conclude as they say in 'The Castle'.........I think you're dreaming !

I thought  Ellerslie turned on a brilliant day...the racing was just outstanding .
Big ,even fields racing for good stakes [by NZ standards] ,some good horses[ by NZ standards] and the racing IMO was outstanding.
The facilities are far and away the best in NZ , and the track seems to be vastly improved and generally things ran like clockwork.Public facilities very good and improvements being made throughout from upgraded track ,great new stabling area and freshly painted seats in Ascot Stand.Plenty of widows open, great viewing ,free water ,well staffed and good security.
It was a top days racing ,the best available and the racing lived up to the Group status of most of the races, exciting and competitive.
Sorry ,not a day for 5 year olds and bouncy castles.
The only complaint I heard was sitting beside me in stand...a grumpy old man complaining about the music on horses return when they blast out the winning jockeys choice.....it turns out it was Nerula...haha. Us young guys love that....the winning horse and smiling jockey trot down the chute with the beautiful white clerks horses while the winning connections get very excited ,some waving to their friends in stand ,others kissing and hugging  or being interviewed all orchestrated by MGuerin who I thought did a fine job !
Great commentating by GSimon .....my only minor complaint would be the shortening cooking the hot chips was past its use by date ! Needed changing !
Not quite the vibe and eye candy of Boxing Day but a brilliant days racing .
Well done Ellerslie....roll on Karaka Day , Derby Day and Cup day.

I think that country racing on carnival days and holidays are more the “family type” race days. Group days at tracks like Ellerslie are more for the regular racegoer and punter. JMHO. One of my favourite days was the year (1986) Kerry Lane won the Auckland Cup. I was in course for the races at “Hanging Rock”, a beautiful picturesque Race Course our near Mt Macedon, an hour from Melbourne. In between races, me and my kids played cricket on the course proper - along with a hundred others. Took our picnic rug, sandwiches and beer. A great day. But Flemington on Derby Day or Cox Plate day at Moonee Valley are def not for the kiddies.

If children’s entertainment is your priority then maybe you should be looking elsewhere to take your kids? It’s the “horse races”, not a children’s theme park.
