Also need to consider if the Aussie invite accepts ,that will mean one less Kiwi entrant.

The difference between NZ & Aus - we will fall over backwards to get them here.    They will try every trick in the book to keep us away (Ask Steven Reid!)

Hard to disagree with you , but I guess the Quality of the days Harness Racing will be long remembered after the price is forgotten.
Plus one assumes there are enough folk [ demand ] willing and able to afford to pay for a comfortable room and surroundings to view what is usually an exciting days racing.
I guess its a bit like paying for a club membership these days...not a lot of value in it with free entry etc these days.
As a rare drinker ,I also often find myself 'subsidising' the drinks of the big drinkers who can have a great days  'good value' drinking on any ticket which includes drinks .
I see it as contribution to the Club and Industry as they really need to make a dollar on their biggest day......... The actual cost I compare to $450 to Watch Lions test v All Blacks , $300 for Celine Dion ,$250 for USA rocker whose name escapes me [ great show ! ]  A$750 for Members stand [with some restrictions] for the Derby/Melbourne Cup duo....A$100 minimum for Melbourne cup public area to see very little !
At least its just a gold coin donation[ to St Johns] to get into the Jewels ! Everyone welcome !

    Hi Guys,
Tasman Man has asked me to pass on the fact that he is unable to become involved with this transaction / wager !
TM is well known for his book of excuses....
At this time he is somewhat hamstrung by an emergency leg operation he had a few weeks ago and several subsequent visits to hospital.
Can he be trusted with other folks money ? Well the bank needs ID and proof everytime he spends a penny and the taxman seems to track his every move at his 'old folks residence - a home for the bewildered'. They have a tracker on his 'walker'.
He's so mean he can make omelettes with out breaking any  eggs !
Since he retired from TV ,he shuns publicity.....a stouch involving two such celebrities could go viral !
He used to be indecisive but now he's not so sure !
He reports he has not followed all this thread but he'd rather attend a 'peace- pipe ' smoking  session down at the Viaduct and help keep the assailants apart but warns he now so weak he couldn't pull a sailor off his sister !

Following a thread on here a few years back I agreed to hook up with Memphis and talk racing while visiting Sydney but cell phones were quite new and I couldn't work mine...haha ,it only worked in NZ....so I missed him. !On next trip  I somehow met up with him and Pogo at a Cronulla NRL game and had a fine time .
After a Chinese meal ,courtesy of Pogo ,Memphis and I decided to get the train back to Sydney where we chatted cricket with some random immigrants on the train.
    A very good day ,I remember !

After the epic thread today I thought I’d lighten the mood up a bit and tell you of a personal experience I had many years ago when I used to live in Auckland.
My best friend Andrew and I were in Queen Street when we came across the Navy with these free Sky City passes. Sky City had just been built and it was the official opening that night for VIPs only. Andrew and I were given a Sky City lanyard each from a couple of the Navy boys and we went back to his house to get changed as it was a formal event (black tie unbeknown to us). Andrew put his suit on and I borrowed a suit off his father then we trundled back into the city with our Sky City lanyards feeling very excited that we were going to sneak into this event uninvited. Anyway we both took the escalator up to the official entrance and to our dismay we were told that the passes were not valid for the main VIP event that night (the casino was not due to open up to the public until the next day) and we were sent away packing back down the escalators. Feeling very dejected we were walking out back onto the street when we came across the band who would be playing there that night. Anyway we got talking and one of the band members said he would come down the lift to the basement in the carpark and meet us down there to let us in. It was a long shot and anyway we went down to the basement waiting outside the lift not having much hope we would see the band member who had walked in the main entrance up the escalators with his band. Several minutes passed and we were feeling pretty flat staring at the motionless lift then all of a suddden the doors opened and the band member we met outside said jump in! We couldn’t believe it! The excitement returned and we both looked at each other feeling like we had won lotto. The doors opened and EVERYONE was wearing black tie formalwear except us who had our suits and ties on. Ha ha. EVERYONE was a celebrity there EXCEPT US ha ha but we didn’t care. I headed to the bathroom to take a piss and I had the current All Black captain at the time Sean Fitzpatrick on one side of me and double Olympic gold medalist Danyon Loader on the other and they were both thinking he is this person!! Ha ha. I then headed out onto the gaming floor and had a brief chat with the Education minister at the time Lockwood Smith before moving on to Paul Holmes. It was crazy! Andrew and I then spent the rest of the night playing blackjack with Russell, Martin and Jeff Crowe all giving us strange looks in our ties thinking who are these boys! Ha ha. One of the best days of my life and one I’ll never forget.

For those of you that couldn't go.There was many hundred people and maybe a thousand, that came from far and wide. Many of those faces you have seen on TV. Trainers, Owners and Jockeys.
The latter included Peter Johnson and daughter Daniielle (TJ's god-daughter) David Peake and notably Greg Childs made a pilgrimage there.
The brilliant George Simon officiated and people close to Trevor came forward and spoke.
There was music and laughter and a some held back tears.
George ended the service with a beautiful "Waiata"
We left proud that we knew a great man!

Certainly being an owner in the North takes commitment. The 'open class' trot got canned last week at the Park with insufficient  noms (think 6 or 7) - didn't even hold open them open as did for other races. Makes it hard for those that did start off long marks in a big field to get any useful form to get into the group races coming up. Small consolation was dropping rating points. It's a bad state to be in when you dread your horse getting 5th. You get less money in the bank after paying percentages than getting last and don't lose any  points.

I think the damage has been done over the ensuing years, and lay the blame completely at the feet of the racing board, with no vision and no long term viable plan to increase stakes and encourage people to breed a horse. I have mates that would rather buy a boat or jet ski and get their  fun that way , after you present the costs involved and returns once you present them to train a horse.
Less horses bred = smaller fields = less betting = lower turnover = less distributions = lower stakes.

The whole industry is based around betting and it would be rare to find a participant who either has a bet or at least thinks about having a bet !
Especially when many are struggling and a few hundred  $$ extra would come in handy.
Therefore it staggers me to think that those wanting a bet but by the rules unable to , so openly defy the rules knowing that their future/livelihood depends on  it.
    Its plain dumb !
