I'm sure they'd be disappointed, it is after all THE pinnacle of Harness racing in the South Island.
However, I'd like clarification on one point you continue to make. You keep suggesting the Dunn's have spent more then anybody else at the recent sales. I suggest to you they'd be in the top 10 for $'s spent, but most definitely behind Feiss, Dalgety, Lincoln Farms, Stonewall Stud, Kennard's, Breckon Farms & dare I say it, the All Stars themselves. Yet, they still managed to win the trainers premiership last season!!!
I don't have a bias, just fact checking.

    Indeed Cubes,
Great to catch up.....your horse will win races ,showed a fair bit of lick ,lets say it down in worst part of track !
Sure is something unique/special about Cup week in Garden City which needs to be retained .
Certainly less current North Island horses than in past but racing folk from all across NZ from all denominations ....administrators from all over , old and new trainers all there.
Old Double All Blacks , NZ Cricket captains and trainers/ jockeys and a real mixing of all codes ....they even had a kids Kart Harness race won by Waikato's Kate Coppins.
Spotted some of my old fav jockeys MJ Skelton and DNHadfield.
Southland horses very competitive ,great to see....shame that Otago area hardly represented ,unlike the past.
Sure the public grandstand not a good look , was so good viewing in the past but the Main stand and temporary areas  such vibrant areas .....and plenty of grass areas still.
Cant understand how Kiwi Ida raced so poorly and fell over backwards at the Stewards quinella but little to groan about.
I guess its the people that make it......a great week not to be missed.
Hope to catch up again Cubes , hoped you might pick me up as I hitch hiked to Ashburton trots but maybe unlike me you don't bat for both teams !
Cup Week in Garden City .....not to be missed !

All astute 'Cafers will know that the Cubemeister is hopeless on the punt
And this week proves no exception
And Cubity missed the first Saturday @ Riccarton 'cause we were in Dunners
And Cubity's donkey ran like a donkey on Wednesday
Yet The Cubinator has a smile from wide to dial 'cause Cubes is having fun at the track and catching up with 'Cafer mates and spinning some yarns
Was that Tasmanman , Chelseacol , Hutch , Uneasy ,Dodecahedron whom we tripped over yesterday.....?
Tough day on the punt but catching up with good sort 'cafers at the track makes it all worthwhile....
     Now onto Saturday.....

Nice to see the two clubs working together, hopefully Avondale jumps in to instead of burying their heads in the sand like they have done for so long.
I mentioned to a board member at the ARC many years ago about the Strath Ayr track, he looked at me in a strange way, muttered a few words along the lines that trainers wouldn’t support it, it was beyond belief.
Anyway, moving right along, a few positives on the way hopefully, our new track here at Cambridge is magic, been riding work on it myself, it is superb!
Thankfully we got it before Winston lost his position, thanks, you did our industry a good turn!

tasman man 11 got a reaction from Aaron Bidlake in Ellerslie - a good day on Melbourne Cup Day
Melbourne Cup day at Ellerslie seemed very successful...... over 6,000 people in attendance ,a good standard of racing , track seemed good and crowd seemed happy.
On course turnover good , hospitality options well sold.
One relegation on day seems to have been generally 'well accepted ' tho I personally surprised it was upheld.
And the rumours surrounding the building of a StrathAyr track at Ellerslie are now more than rumours and the wheels are in motion.
Certainly brings hope to Racing in the North and NZ.
Good work Ellerslie and the ARC Board.

    Well Berri ,
    There is a PRECEDENCE here...plenty !
I awoke this Melbourne Cup morning wondering what would stir Berri into print.
I think last year it was the lack of choice of Moet at Ellerslie races .
The past days as I dialled into the TAB site ,every time the Melbourne Cup field came up with names and a click way from history and comment.
And I just wanted to bet on a maiden race at Kaikoura Harness.
Then there was the Sunday paper lift out ,the Tuesday paper lift out the TV 1 news with the Prime Minister drawing her horse.
And one can't even walk around the Viaduct without tripping over a temporary TAB.
Every where one goes/looks ,we are being drawn into a bet on largely unknown European horses....sure to be a record day for NZ TAB , if the network stands up.
Relax , the day obviously stirs you up....BREW yourself a cuppa.....its been 20 years !

Why do we need a Minister of Racing ?.....is there a Minister of Lotto ?
Probably should just sit under Minister of Internal Affairs...or Sport.
Now it so closely aligned to Sport , under GR , it ill be easier to justify a greater payout of surpluses to Sport .
    Betting figures support it !
    Harness should be worried.
Great to see the 'new' TAB agency so prominently placed in the Viaduct.....should be heaving tomorrow !
Stack em high and watch em fly !

Kinda obvious Trump when there are so many more "Overseas Races" to bet on.
Plus , often good class Aussie races  to bet on against  mainly maiden races in NZ, plus much greater pools for Quaddies etc in  Aussie.
I do wonder why you seem to delight in the put down of NZ racing when you held one of the most respected posts in NZ racing plus owned a good horse which did pretty well in the NZ racing environment !

tasman man 11 got a reaction from We're Doomed in What's the rule?
I believe ,from experience, there is no hard and fast rule.
But the racing policy states that races with 6 or less nominations /withdrawal time MAY be deleted.
Races with 4 or less will LIKELY be deleted..........but group or listed races will go ahead regardless.
My view is that races with some point of difference e.g. early 2 yr old races or races seen as a stepping stone to upcoming feature races e.g. 2 and 3 yr old races , MAY be more likely to be run with these minimums.
Dare I say that clubs which contribute more thru betting turnover MAY be more likely to run a small field than a lesser club with a smaller turnover.
Of course the odd trainer can accept with horses then scratch to ensure the race goes ahead.
But then ......what would I know ?

Why the need for a Minister Of Racing ?
A historical thing ,no doubt , the introduction of the TAB and Gaming Act in 1950's or before ,attracting Governments interest particularly with Taxation.
As racing became big business , all the integrity issues seemed to attract more Governmental attention.
'Rugby ,racing and beer ' not so prominent in NZ Society nowdays so it will be no surprise if current politicians try and distance themselves as the sport/industry becomes less relevant.

    #1....Nice day here in Canterbury
#2....Nice people down here and spring is in the air
#3....NZ Cup week is just around the corner and oft punters can get good form and info from the trials.........remember 'Cafers the ol' saying....."Trial form is good form "
#4.....Can get real good yarns going with the jockeys...
    #5.....Cubes' donkey ran last
#6...Matt Cross is quite a nice bloke
#7....While we are on the subject...Mark Mac was too
#8....The Cubinator heard on the buzzword that tickets have just about sold out for Cup week here 'cause the people from Auckland and Up Northness are not going to Melbum or Sudney thus year but instead are going to Chch to see what all the fuss is about.
#9...Back on topic.....when one goes to the trials one usually does not lose too much mullah on the punt
#10...Cubes thinks Cubes is a racing tragic
#11....The food was quite good although @ Ashburton they do whitebait fritters
#12....Cubes isn't quite sure why they trial there and don't race....something to do with jockey safety....maybe kilo4kilo knows about that ????
#13....Dodecahedron drove Cubes so Cubes could talk on the phone all the way there and back

2005 Melbourne Cup was certainly a great occasion  and they certainly turned on the celebrations/drama for Makybe Diva ........threats to scratch her if the track not watered saw significant water applied and when Cup day dawned very foggy it took sometime before some surface water soaked in.
By Cup time ,when the hot sun took effect it created conditions like a sauna and tho Makybe Diva won brilliantly many other horses didn't cope as well.
Xcellent did NZ proud with an outstanding 3rd ,and Envoy[ KKelso] got a top 10 payout !
One well fancied Irish horse struggled in the sauna furnace and the jockey dismounted ASAP after the line cos he felt the horse was going to drop dead it was so distressed !
But all in all a great Cup....no doubt.
