  1. We produce world class horses but our local racing industry is lacking stars because the cream of every crop bred here gets exported. Even top NZ owned horses (Imperatriz, I Wish I Win etc) are now essentially Australian trained and won't race here ever again. As with most things, it comes down to a business decision. And racing in Australia is too lucrative to stay away from.
  2. Yes I wondered if he'd be one of those three-year-olds that runs a big race in the Derby and never goes on with it but he really toughed it out today against a top filly who had the gun run.
  3. The time slot seems strange to me. Wouldn't it make more sense on a Sunday morning? Surely more people would watch then rather than a Monday morning.
  4. $350k in prizemoney if they can nab third, $100k for top 8, and $50k if you run last.
  5. The Black Caps have a huge mental block playing Australia, especially in tests. They just seem to fold.
  6. Four NZ breds are in the Australian Guineas this year, and of those you'd think Quintessa and Pendragon would have stayed here and run in The NZB Kiwi if it was around this year. Last year only one NZ bred went around in the Randwick Guineas.
  7. I think other slot races will follow suit with the public auction. Seems a much better way to do it in terms of both publicity and transparency.
  8. If that's the case it seems a bit pointless calling them the Avondale Cup & Avondale Guineas. Especially when the Cup used to be a quality G1 event and is now run at a different course over a different distance at a different time of year.
  9. Unfortunate to see her go, not just for our local racing but from a breeding perspective it's one less G1 winner that will go to stud here and leave progeny at the sales here.
  10. I have heard some sports like netball say they get a good deal from Sky that allows them to put money back into the sport, but you have to weigh that up against the loss of interest from fans who don't have Sky. I know I watch more sport when it's on free to air as it's much easier to access. Many countries such as Australia have laws that important sports events must be free for all to view. For example much of the spring racing carnival has to be on free to air tv. I do wonder if the loss of interest in recent years in our local sports is because we don't promote them to the public like they do. The number of people who have Sky is decreasing and so a smaller and smaller audience is viewing these events.
  11. Loyalty can be overrated. Look at how Elliot manages to find ways to get Legarto beaten. I think connections will be wondering 'what if' when JMac, Zahra, Shinn etc. are riding on the same card.
  12. Interesting to hear several trainers lament the 13 day gap between the Railway and Telegraph. Perhaps the Telegraph would be better placed next Saturday rather than being run today.
  13. Not sure but why do they still call it the Levin Classic? Made sense when it was run at Levin but seems odd to be still calling it that now.
  14. Many of the fields seemed lacking compared to previous years despite the significant prizemoney increases.
  15. The runner-up was pretty unlucky, getting pushed sideways when making her run.
  16. That race shouldn't have gone ahead under those circumstances.
  17. I think they could give him more than 60 seconds, or open those topics up for a discussion and cut down on the amount of time they spend replaying races and interviews that already aired on Saturday.
  18. Yes well done to the Aussies. It did make me smile to see them win after the way the Indian Cricket Board have been handling things lately and the outsized role they have in world cricket. From making demands about the cup format so India get more games, to the very poor efforts to accommodate overseas fans, to stifling the growth of the game globally, it has started to feel like decision making for the sport starts and finishes with whatever is good for India. Something that is not healthy for the game around the world.
  19. I saw it mentioned elsewhere that southerly winds caused slow times at Flemington across the day.
  20. I did think Trackside Premier made racing more watchable for those of us who don't want to be watching 6+ venues that they have on Trackside 1. I do wonder if it is time to have a presenter who maybe has more forthright opinions or is willing to call a spade a spade. Although the current ones all seem "nice" but they don't really say much more than how wonderful the racing is, what a great performance etc. There's no real analysis that you see in other sports. Luke Radich was someone was a bit more unfiltered and wasn't afraid to call something as he saw it.
  21. Great day for the Kiwi syndicators with Atishu blowing them away in the Champions Stakes. No doubt she's a pretty valuable mare now too with a WFA G1 win.
  22. I think in some cases (such as when the horses go to the start) the Australian channel goes to an ad break so Trackside have to fill the time with chatter.
  23. Legarto ran on but being slow away put paid to her chances. The $10 Million was a big carrot but she's probably more of a 1600m-2000m horse at that level in Australia.
  24. True but you do get value on the NZ runners. The Aussie commentators were writing off Prowess last weekend and Legarto has drifted in recent weeks from $5 to $8.50 even after the current favourite flopped badly last start.
