  1. These 3 gallopers all paid over 100/1 for a place.Waffles 104 pounds at Wingatui,Conjurer 102 pounds at Paeroa and Jazz King $103.15 at Foxton. My biggest place dividend was $31.90 paid by Steinbeck at Avondale on December 13 1975.I never forget that race, he drew barrier 20 in a 20 horse field and came across the face of the field to lead easily, on the home turn he was 6 lengths in front. He was only collared 150 metres out by Ngapunawai but fought on tenaciously for his second placing.
  2. Hi Maggie I remember Trevor, he was a very good apprentice jockey who rode in the North. I was still at high school when he tragically died, i still have his death notice. He rode 21 winners his first was on "Black To Win" at Gate Pa.Other winners were Fair Fun, My Advice, Bay Sovereign (3), Sentoga, Synmoor, Tongariro, Lady Maple, Imo Toff, Neptune's Picture, Tituscanbe, Kandy King, Mr Sovereign (2), Bannaman, Dulcimer, Master Show, Grandioso and Panhandle.
  3. These horses raced more than 40 years ago and they competed in races that they did not win.Waffles 1952,Conjurer 1966 and Jazz King 1968.Waffles was from the South Island,Conjurer and Jazz King both from the North Island.
  4. Hi Paul The horse was called Wairoa Belle and there was one 1 pound ticket on her.Total amount invested on the race was 1,570 pounds, she paid 1,033 pounds and a few shillings.

  10. Hi John Bill Cherry was a fine announcer from Southland who had a rarther distinctive style of calling.Bill retired in 1976.It sounded like he was singing a song and at the finish of a race he would say as an example " and BONNY ALOUISE will ( high voice ) win ( low voice ) his calls were amazing. One of the very best ever was Bill.R.I.P.Bill. Noel Berkett's father zzz drove a winner at Richmond in March of 1920.The winners name was WAIROA BELLE ,she was a grey horse and paid approximately 1,033 pounds for a win.New Zealand's biggest ever win dividend.
  11. Hi Pogo Nice try but that's not the answer. Best wishes

  13. Another good South Island commentator has been added to the list. I heard that George passed away awhile back now. R.I.P. George. A big thanks to all who have supplied me with additional names for my list.
