I hope the mare was hard fed when carrying the foal. They should both be eating hard feed well before being weaned. We tend to wean as Dopey says. the later the better, but big studs wean all at once regardless of when foal was born. Economics..

Yes depends, however March is s good month because:
    1. It's not Christmas (dec)
    2. It's not sales time (Jan feb)
    3. It's not yet getting cooler (April)
    true farming logic that.
OR if the foal is  dragging the mares condition down and she's in foal. A better question would be when do I start hard feeding.

Hey better be careful slinging at the best, lets face it - CWJ is one of the best in the saddle, we havent got alot of new talent coming through behind these riders either, this game is hard.
Also if theres a genuine concern for peoples safety let the so called "big boys" take his license off him, dont get personal, nobody knows someones personal issues or needs no matter how mighty they might think they are, stop judging and deal with the supposed issue at hand

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing undertakes review of Ellerslie jumps races

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing is conducting a full review of the jumping races at Ellerslie at Queen’s Birthday weekend. The review is being undertaken in conjunction with the Auckland Racing Club, the Racing Integrity Unit and New Zealand Jumps Inc.

This follows the fatal injuries suffered by three horses who fell in jumping races at Ellerslie on Monday.

“Any horse fatality is a tragedy, however, to have three incidents in one day, as we did at Ellerslie on Monday was most unusual,” the NZTR General Manager for Racing, Matthew Hall said.

“We are looking at all safety aspects in jumping races, both at Ellerslie and on a national basis.

“Just two horses had been fatally injured in jumping races at Ellerslie in the previous six years and the deaths on Monday were the first in a jumping race there since August 2013.

“We have done a considerable amount of work to minimise potential injuries in jumping races – including an annual audit of every jumps venue - and the statistics would indicate that this is working.

“Three horses, from 881 runners (0.34 percent), suffered fatal injuries in jumping races in New Zealand last year and two horses, from 907 runners, (0.22 percent) were fatally injured in 2014.

“There is always an element of risk, to both horse and rider, in all equestrian sports but NZTR is committed to doing everything we can to mitigate those risks,” Hall said.

Animal welfare is a significant part of NZTR’s operations and during 2015 NZTR set up a project with Waikato University to build a detailed equine injury database on raceday incidents. This includes more detailed incident forms, completed by on-course vets, aimed at identifying the frequency, type and outcome of racing injuries.
NZTR also invested more than $1 million in racing and training infrastructure improvements in the past financial year, to maximise equine safety and welfare, and works closely with the RNZSPCA and the NZ Equine Health Association. NZTR also supports horse welfare studies through the NZ Equine Research Foundation and the Massey University Partnership for Excellence.

You are certainly right especially on the lack of talent on the jockey front, the ranks are very thin, a tough life and those still riding in there 50s  a testament to dedication and longevity, and keeping the game going.

3 Jumps races so far and 3 dead horses, oh dear its an average look on Ellerslies 2nd biggest jumps day.
The jury's out on when jumps racing is finished. It's not if but when.
When it's would up in Aus we will follow suit not far behind.
I am staunchly in favour of it being maintained but when 3 are out down (so far) in a day, it's time for more debate on it.

What an improvement for this show. Jason Tan is a natural and needs to be utilised by trackside more often. There is definately a future for David Walsh in fronting oncourse interviews and comments, not to mention Weigh In. Hope they both stay on board. They both bring credibility without having to parrot everything Australian. What do others think?.

Jess please read my reply on your personal messages. I agree your horse needs to go to a small trainer where it will get individual handling. Strip it of any gear, and get its trust first and foremost. The person I recommend is Ian Marks as he fits all those criteria. I have had first hand experience of what this guy can do having seen him break in many difficult horses. His method is very kind and he works on a horse until it understands.  I know he has moved to the North Island and is training a small team there.

    Hey Jess,
Send the horse to Iain Marks in Te Aroha, I have known Iain and Betty for a long time now and thay are brilliant with horses that have problems, they also have a top rider that is gentle and understanding of the horses individual needs - I have witnessed them with a number of trouble horses and they take the time that they need and also are willing to change their training techniques to suit the specific horse, I have personally given them horses of my own to work with and have been nothing but impressed with the job.
I sent them a horse to break in and due to the condition of the horse it took 6 months to get him ready to ride (no fault of Iain's) I thought holy smoke this is gonna cost me, but no they charged one fee to break in a horse regardless of time taken to complete the job, he also DOES NOT send a horse home without it being spot on....... just a thought for you but I would personally vow for the job that they do and the extra work that they will put in if needed.

Great trainer/rider combo and are more than willing to go the extra mile.
    Good luck

Why do you think some are going to Australia. Even Australia's smaller meetings pay $270 back to 9th, plus pay all fees. Only syndicates, and studs racing their progeny, will survive in NZ and those pricks at the top still get their fat salaries. The Govt needs to step up to the plate and assist with stakes instead of worrying about changing flags etc. This industry employs a lot of people and helps the economy in general. Why do you think Trainers and owners have to sell overseas after winning trials. With the small numbers of top horses staying to race in NZ our stakes races will not be recognized in a few years.

    What a crock of xxxxx.
My close friend has worked with Peter Moody, at his stables, as a guest with full unlimited access to every aspect of that operation, and he tells me that Moods uses Tuff Rock, a non medical natural poultice.
The Feds are wrong here, as they usually are these days unfortunately.
Here is why they're wrong, Tuff Rock does what cold water does, nothing more, it's a heat exchanger and it draws heat out of the soft tissues while it dries. If you put cold wet bandages on a horse before it travelled to the races you'd get EXACTLY the same result using EXACTLY the same scientific theory.
What's the difference? Ice bandages = Tuff Rock every minute of every day.
    Here's another example of stupidity.
One trainer uses a plastic Pump bottle of cold water to rinse his horses mouth after saddling up, the other walks the horse two steps to the hosing bay and rinses its mouth out with a hose.
One's subject to outrageous charges, the other is accountable to no one, it's absolutely nonsensical application of laws and rules based on ignorance and stupidity.
I doubt you need me to defend Moods on the cobalt charge but it'd be nice to think those making the rules knew what elemental free cobalt chloride was, and what cyanocobolamin is, and which proprietary products contain which, some with written guarantees on the packaging stating they won't return a positive and are not performance enhancing.
The Feds have made this mucky bed we're rolling in and yet again they seem determined to prove to the world that they can xxxx up the simplest of tasks, they can't apply the rules because they're ignorant, uneducated , and possibly a bit stupid, and meantime the hard working committed and passionate ' rock stars ' of the racing world, like Moods, suffer and inevitably pull stumps.
Such is racing life in the asylums that envelop us.
