Berri I have said it before a million times...

We have to get used to the idea in NZ racing that the TAB and NZRB cannot wait until the industry here shuts down completely.  Flogging the Aussie product is all aimed towards that.

From their perspective (1) no more having to produce Trackside from obscure locations all over the show (2) no more whinging industry participants(3) no more having to make distributions to the codes and consequently (4) more money for bureaucracy and bloated salaries for themselves

Clearly you are struggling to see the big picture here

Very true (although let's not forget Sir Vancelot in 1999), but the point I was making was a little broader than that.  The Aussie attitude towards the InterDoms can broadly be summed up like this: "Righto boys, first, having home advantage 3 years in 4 isn't enough, so let's hold the thing here every year.  If the other Dominion wants to compete in the InterDominions, they'll just have to come across the ditch.  Second, let's make it even tougher for them by having just one round of heats so that they don't have time to acclimatise, unless they're already here, in which case they're helping our racing scene rather than theirs.  Third, let's give our big-4 States (which aren't Dominions, but never mind) their own heats; we can dump all the Kiwis in an odds-and-sods heats against the rest of our horses and give them bad draws.  Oh, and since we can't win the trotters section even with all these advantages, we'll just scrap that altogether."

Ok, it's a bit OTT.    But it *would* be more honest to rename the 'InterDoms' -- to something like the Australian Pacing Championships -- rather than continuing to devalue a once-great brand.

That would have been Dave McDonald's hardest day in his thirty odd years of race calling, especially as he knows the family and all the southern racing people so well. His call on The Diamond One's win was professional and brilliant, and reflected the emotion of the day in a tasteful way without detracting from the greatness of the win. I will always remember his "she needs a bit of help stevie boy" and "second- who cares?", because we all just wanted so badly to see The Diamond One win for the Andertons.

    you do the trackside pokie
    and you turn yourself around

i agree with the assertions of Davey~Mac having made a great call, and especially hosting the whole day with tact and tastefulness.
'tight' that the Southern realm Is..would've meant a haunting harrowing day for any and all., especially the Anderton family..which has quite a spread and knit.

Davey~Mac is everyone's 'father' 'brother' 'son' and 'uncle'..he's that special minion that moves fondly among the whole Southern racing community..he'd be entirely liked and 'loved' by all, and so he faced a bloody hard day.
..as soon as the first winners with connections to and also Claire'n'Steven's trained runners won, the emotions would've been raw and tormentuos., Dave commanded the situation with reverance and aplomb.

He was fantastic., No one else could've pulled this off like Davey~Mac did . . .the way that 'Deep South' is related . . .and the way Davey's related to them all.

...his was the performance of a Knight of the realm...the tightly knit Southern 'land'

Whether you like Dave or not the thread is about his call yesterday which I felt was excellent especially as he personally knows the family and almost didn't call due to the emotion of the day.

All they have to do is explain why they instigate these changes, and perhaps we would be more sympathetic to them beerwithduncan.
As they never explain any of the contentious things they do you have to wonder if they enjoy annoying people. We know they are arrogant so perhaps that is the case.
If they did explain we may not agree with their reasoning, but at least we would know why they do what they do.

It appears it is done deliberately so as to annoy as many people as possible, otherwise they would show the change on their TV Schedules. Mind you that would require some ability to think ahead.

I agree with you beerwithduncan about using the word barn instead of stable. A barn is for storing hay, feed equipment etc, and a stable is made up of loose boxes for the housing of horses. It's this fascination this country has got with copying America even when they are wrong. eg. the horses by Mach Three (mac) pronounced the American way of "Mark" Three.

I disagree that it is only the stakemoney that makes the Melbourne Cup what it is.

The two mile distance (3200 metres) is the distance standard in the Southern Hemisphere. That is what differentiates such races from the rest.
Bob Skelton, when he came over for the Wellington Cup a few years ago, clearly stated that two mile races were markedly different from mile-and-a-half races, requiring a different skill set from both horse and rider.
I get excited by the thought of two-mile thoroughbred and standardbred races. I have no such feelings for races over a mile-and-a-half. I believe that my enthusiasm for the ultimate Southern Hemisphere distance is matched by most of us who are more excited about the horse race for what it is as opposed to those who care only about what can be profited from in relation to a horse race.

    All the best.

and the disdain for the importance of Gore is seen before their R2 where trackside only 'cross' to the coverage of this race 3mins Out!,  there's a 14 horse field with scant recorded prelims and nearly no time for punter's considerations.

more revenue is earnt from a NZ race than an ozzie one..and that NZ races are meant to have a priority over other jurisdictions!

They're all saying it and it is very irritating:
And so to the latest vocal tic plaguing New Zealand sport.
Instead of holding a simple opinion, like saying, "that was offside," New Zealand commentators have started adding the superfluous "for me" - or the far more mangled - "for mine" - in front of virtually everything they say.
"For mine, that's offside." It's such a debasement of the language they should be tried by the Oxford Dictionary World Court.
