  1. That was my initial opinion too. And having watched the race 3 or 4 times since I have become even more convinced. He was very one paced when he got out; in fact the winner put a length or 2 on him at that point. No horse has been able to do that in any of his other starts. If you read the comments coming out of Ballydoyle in the days leading up to the race, the main concern was his ability to get the trip. If that was Aidan's concern it is only natural he would try and train him to get the trip; by default, train the speed out of him. If that was the case I don't know why because he is a horse who has always settled beautifully and produced a scintillating turn of foot when required. I can always remember when Snap won the NZ Oaks. She was an out an out sprinter (got a mile at best in later life). D.J's comment at the time was that as a 3Y0 the best horse wins regardless of the distance.
  2. you don't have the "dosh". Read the following advert for Rios from Waikato Stud: "Rios A handsome G1 performer, from a ‘Broodmare of the Year’ and the only son of world renowned sire HUSSONET at stud in New Zealand. A high quality three-year-old. RIOS downed subsequent Australian G1 winner ALAMOSA in the Wellington Guineas, won the ARC Bonecrusher Stakes, and achieved medallist acclaim in the G1 NZ Two Thousand Guineas and G2 STC Tulloch Stakes on Golden Slipper Day at Rosehill. At four, took record to six wins from 1400-1600m with black-type success. Half-brother to ROMAN EMPEROR – winner of the G1 Australian Derby and G1 Caulfield Cup runner-up. The first son to stud in New Zealand for MR PROSPECTOR’s elite son HUSSONET – a Champion Sire seven times over with 75 stakes winners. His 27 G1 winners in five different countries headlined by ‘Australian Horse of the Year’ WEEKEND HUSSLER – Timeform’s highest rated horse of last decade. Out of 2008-09 Broodmare of the Year, GUSSY GODIVA – the half-sister to the USA G1 winner BLACK MAMBA, who sold for US$1.5 million in Kentucky in 2009. Related to G1 Australasian Oaks winner TULLY THUNDER and to G1 VRC Oaks winner SANDERAE. Impeccable NZ distaff side and DANEHILL/DANZIG free. Bred on the same MR PROSPECTOR – LAST TYCOON cross as Japanese sire sensation, KING KAMEHAMEHA. 2012 SERVICE FEE $4,000 plus gst, live foal guarantee". Based on that do you still think you would get any takers at $8k???
  3. conveniently overlooking the fact that the very few NZ trained runners to have lined up in the Slipper have generally acquitted themselves pretty damn well: best of all of course was Our Maizcay who got beaten by 1.3 lengths in running 4th from the outside barrier. The only other NZ trained runners that spring to mind, in the last 25 years or so, were John Wheeler's Scotch & Dry &, I think, Stu Munro's Tasman Dancer. My fading memory tells me that they both finished 5th, but I stand to be corrected. And then there is the mighty McGint .. he dealt to the Marscay, the eventual Slipper winner, by out sprinting him up the straight, in the Slipper lead-up, on a broken leg. Tell me he wouldn't have given the Slipper a big fright if he had been able to line up?? So Pogo old son, including Dr Green, I make the tally at 4 NZ trained that have lined up in the Slipper in the last 25 years; 3 of them weighed in with 1 a good thing beaten. I wouldn't call that an ambulance dodging record from a country that definitely can't compete with OZ when it comes to 2YO's.
  4. I agree with what you say but having watched the replay "a few times" do you think FF made up one inch on MN in the last 400m? My point is that it's not beyond doubt that FF would have finished in front of MN-without the bump he still wouldn't have finished in front IMO. Jocks have always got a good line of defence when it comes to interference on heavy winter tracks. It's called impeding momentum. They can always argue how difficult it is to regain that momentum on such heavy tracks.
  5. She deserves it. I hope she gets there.
  6. Sorry, I forgot to add the reason for my inquiry. I happened to watch a race on Saturday and was surprised when looking through the results to find the horse I was interested in was beaten by 1 1/2 lengths. When watching on Trackside live I thought it was about a length. So I thought I would check out the photo finish because, if true, it would give me a guide as to judging a finish on the track, in future, when the rail is out so far.
  7. I have been looking through the results section on this site and I have a question which someone here might be able to answer. Why is it that they can get the race video up so quickly, generally within 3 or 4 hours of the last race, yet 4 days after the fact there are no photo finishes loaded? I know this is not an earth shattering issue, but I thought I would ask the question. I would have thought the photo finishes were far easier to upload than the race video's?
  8. I went off track to the original thread ... What I was also trying to say was that he is a very good presenter but also suffers from the same problem he has an auctioneer .. he knows he's good. As a consequence is performance becomes personality driven. Think of the great presenters in Oz an tell me where this happens. Think: Bruce Clark; Shayne Templeton; Richard Haynes; Caroline Searcy etc. Obviously I have omitted Richard Callander. But the thing he has in his favour is he has a great knowledge of punting and form. By comparison, Steve relys on personality.
  9. Steve is, quite simply, the best thoroughbred auctioneer on the planet. Check out the average sale prices he is able to get on his "run" versus his compatriots at any sale he is involved in. He can pluck bids from the depths of despair that other auctioneers don't even understand are there for the taking. The unfortunate thing is, he knows it. And he has had an ego problem from very early in his career. He spat the dummy back in the early 90's with NZB because he thought he was better than Joe (and he probably was) and went freelance. To there credit they bought him back into the fold which is a decision they would never have regretted. He is the, as in the, best auctioneer on there rotation. As previously stated he is able to pluck bids that the other guys don't even suspect are available. Joe is still ok; Clint Donavan is a real up and comer, as is the new boy on the block - Tim Carter's boy (sorry the name escapes me). Michael Kneebone?? Might br a nice guy but just a number counter. Check out his results v's the other guys and you will find he is consistently down on the averages the other guys can pull.
  10. there were 3 horses worth watching. What happened to So You Think in the Prince of Wales??
  11. Of equal significance, there was barely a cigarette paper between them for the entire race. It was the most appropriate result I can ever remember in a race.
  12. you'll find that what you're viewing is equivalent to our noms. Final field declarations happen the day before in the UK (maybe a day earlier at Royal Ascot). I doubt whether they will be dropping SYT back to the mile after having just run & won the 10f Tatts Gold Cup, particularly when he has the 10f Prince of Wales Stakes, which is his declared option, on the 2nd day.
