Des Wyatt ,one of natures true gentlemen. Many great memories of travelling to races with Des in the twilight of his riding career. His best ride in this period was (Sir)Silver Lad,with Jocasta also a classy juvenile. After many falls/injuries,Des certainly made it to a grand old age. RIP Des.

This Friday Night,Racing resumes with only 7 Race Card. This is what a CD Race Card looks like without any Cole Runners! After leaving Nominations Open,ended up with 7 Races,with only 2 Full Size Fields (3 dividends)

Ahh Iraklis,true his draw of 8 front line did him no favours. However,finishing almost 6 lengths behind first six place getters I would rate disappointing.He was,afterall,second favorite. Did you notice that the two horses with worse draws (9+10) finished 3rd & 4th,both as $70 shots. Cheers Pilli

Perhaps Matty A is a 'genetic freak'. Agree,an impressive debut.For such an inexperienced horse,stepped beautifully from the stand,and stretched out long strides near winning post. Looks like Tim Vince can expect some fun with this guy.

Crusty..your memory playing some tricks on you me thinks.I travelled to Sydney Easter 1977 to cheer Sir Silver Lad/Des Wyatt home at Randwick in a high class field Australasian Championship Stakes.He was trained by Barry Petley (brother of scribe Jack)at Takanini,and owned by Robin Peel-Walker,Glynis McNicholl (20 years later a role in Shorty St) and another partner.

Sad News broke today that highly respected Northern Trainer Steve Clark had passed away suddenly. Steve had a lifetime association in The Greyhound Code,harking back to Kumeu Days during the 1970's. After mixing his business career & greyhounds as hobby,The New Millennium saw Steve get serious & devote all his time to building up a strong Racing Team. From his Dairy Flat Kennel,alongside partner Kathy,he tasted Group One success for the first time in time honoured Waterloo Cup 2008 with Magic Spike,They also combined to win NZ Shootout in same year Steve enjoyed mass publicity due to deeds of star stayer Swift Fantasy,a dual Group One winner in Silver Collar 2010,and NZ Stayers Cup 2011. A rare Group One Quinella followed in 2012 NZ Derby,with a litter he bred and reared seeing Grizz and Peking Tom starring. Another home bred Blitzing Mayhem gave Steve his first NZ Cup victory in 2014,a celebration lasted long into the night next day at Sefton Arms.(thanks Steve) Recent years saw a change in property and downsizing his team,but another quality hound gave Steve his second NZ Cup on mantelpiece with Pinny Mack in 2019. Ironically,Pinny Mack was favourite today at Manukau In The Peter Earley Classic,his final race in a stellar broadcasting career.However,like Steve,his runners never made it to the start'. Thanks Steve for the many trips to the races,and thrills galore helping with your runners on the track. Condolences to your Daughters, Grandkids ,and Kathy.

Actually John,my comment to Andre was more than tongue in cheek.He spent several years working in leading kennels in both Islands,before beginning his Trotting Journey with Stephen Doody. As a solution,what,if any,travel subsidy do ATC offer Trainers from Lower North Island & South Island!

Auckland Trotting Club are racing this Friday with a 5 Race Program..yes that's right,only 5 races. Their total nominations for a full card were less than 60 horses. So,Manukau & Cambridge Dogs haven't sunk to our Rival Code dire levels yet!

Andre,I believe you would be very successful if you mirrored Peter Ferguson and became Dual Code Trainer with some Greyhounds.

I think it's fair to say that most pundants would rank the strength of NZ Greyhound Regions as Southern..Central Districts..then Northerners. So,it was something of a surprise to see the NZ Cup/Galaxy Group 1 double go to Steve Clark & Jared Udy/Denise Cottam Northern Kennels. Well today,the Auckland Cup/Railway Group 1 double went the way of Peter Ferguson & Jared Udy/Denise Cottam. In fact,from only 4 finalists,northern dogs ran 1st 2nd 3rd & 1st. Noteworthy some exciting lower grade dogs from Karen Walsh kennel look set to take their place in Group Races during next 12 months. Pilli.Northern Cheerleader.
