It came to my notice that a past greyhound trainer, Edith Kern, had died recently.
Edith became well known through the deeds of her very good greyhound, McKern, who was a son of Wendy's Legend x Pandalola. McKern was beaten a nose by another very smart dog in Cool Tee Jay in a Wellington Cup and Edith also campaigned McKern in Australia.
Later Edith joined forces with Owen Marron and this was a formidable combination, enjoying  considerable success particularly at Hutt Park, on the grass track at Palmerston North, and at the Solway racecourse. Indeed, for a time, Masterton was very much the centre of greyhound racing in the Central Districts.
As the tracks mentioned came to be closed down, or reconstructed in the case of Palmy, so the Kern/Marron names came to be seen less often among the trainers' lists until they slipped out of the greyhound game completely.
Edith Kern was an admirable member of the greyhound community and will be well remembered by those who were also part of the sport at that same time.

That is very sad to hear, I liked Edith a lot God the last time I saw them Edith and Owen had bought this property in Masterton
I mean this house was huge it had a ballroom and library apparently the house in the early 1900s was the swinging place in Masterton.
I can remember Owen converted one space into an empty out yard it had a roof over it so the dogs wouldn’t get wet when it was raining when they wanted a pee..
They had Edith’s mum living with them, she was a real hard case.
    Good memories..
    Very sad

Yes I was saddened to hear when I was advised as well. Unfortunately had been battling illness for awhile so in a better place now. We started training dogs in the Solway days(actually trained my first winner there ) and Edith was always a cheerful lady happy to help us out. My thoughts are with Owen in this tough time.

My deepest sympathies to Owen Marron. Edith was a lovely lady and was passionate about her dogs, whether they were her beloved greyhounds or other people's pooches, who she was grooming. I had one of Pandalola's pups and Lola produced some lovely litters - the progeny inheriting her calm nature. Edith and Owen were a formidable partnership both on and off the track and two of the nicest people I met in my time in the sport, always willing to share their wealth of knowledge with newcomers like me. I am very sad to hear of her passing. I enjoyed those days days at Hutt Park in the company of Edith and Owen and Owen's late Dad Joe. May she Rest In Peace.

Congratulations to John McInerney on his 10 winners at the dogs at Forbury yesterday. I'd hate to be paying the feed bill  for the 170 dogs he trains (let alone accessing the food for them all - they probably eat the equivalent of a couple of horses or cows daily). I heard the commentators say John had 50 dogs entered at Forbury. I understand Lisa Cole has 120 dogs in her central districts team.  Both must be huge operations. Think of the barking! But when I look at say six or seven dogs in some races coming from one kennel I do wonder about the sport increasingly being a 'numbers game' in many respects and the larger kennels effectively 'holding a mortgage' on the result. Personally, I still think Karen Walsh (with 26 dogs) is the best trainer in the country. Don't get me wrong - the big kennels put up the money and they put in the long hours and good luck to them but I was wondering what others thought of perhaps having no more than four dogs from any one kennel in a race - or is that just not feasible with the numbers the larger kennels have and wanting to give them all a run? Thoughts people?

Eyespy reacted to what a post in Aquamans fekitoa thread
Was watching the tv one news tonight and here they were highlighting the  apparent deliberate lack of transparency  by greyhound nz when it comes to record keeping.
I could not help but think of the post aquaman made last month about the very same subject, where he called for just that..  Interesting to go back and read those who supported his comments and those who rubbished his comments.
So here we are today listening to the news where the greyhound industry is being rubbished because your leaders have failed to do what it appears the majority of your participants want, all to deceive the public.    Its shake your head  and throw your hands in the air stuff.
It also highlights that in some of the threads Scooby has closed down, the very same subject matter is what we are seeing on prime time tv,on radio,in newspapers and on the internet.

Just a warning to all trainers to be on the lookout.
A gentleman rang here a couple of weeks ago and said he heard we trained greyhounds and he was interested in them and could he come to see them and have a talk to me about them. I told him he was welcome. He said he was new to town and how did he get to our place. I told him and he finished with "well that was friendly enough" which seemed a bit odd. He never turned up which also seemed a bit odd.
This morning Brian called round to help  me run some dogs on our running strip and right at the front of the sandpit the dogs pull up in after a run lay a dead rabbit. I ran some dogs there yesterday afternoon and it was not there and the strange thing was it had no sign of injury like a gunshot wound.
With all that is going on in the dog world at the moment it seems so unlikely a rabbit would have a heart attack at the end of our running strip, particularly a short time after a bogus call from a stranger interested in greyhound racing making a bogus call.

With the current investigation apparently far from completed it seems to me that we need to have a look at the lures we use to train greyhounds.
The current investigation has shown that it is hard to tell what is actually  being used on a lure. That is my reason for calling the current half passed legislation stupid.
We need a system where it is easy to identify what the lure actually is. If it has been commercially tanned or not is impossible to tell until you have the lure in your hand and even then it could be debatable.
My suggestion is that the NZGRA investigate the most popular lure amongst participants and get a standard lure manufactured. The only difference would be it would have distinctive colouring or markings that would identify it as a NZGRA or even ANZGRA lure. You would imagine a design manufacturer at Al Baba or the likes would be able to manufacture something with and without a squeaker for a fairly modest amount. The lures would be distributed amongst the participants and would be the only lures able to be used legally to train greyhounds in NZ.
There would be many benefits;  a level playing field, a lure able to be identified from a distance as benign, the same lure could be used at tracks so dogs were chasing the same thing as they do at home.
There would be calls of nanny state and it interferes with my methods but it would ensure there is a starting point for an investigation which would be very clear.
I'll leave the design to the clever buggers but White with red polka dots or a Yellow bunny with green ears could encourage the ockkers.

Isnt Lisa Cole the trainer not Brendon?, all the heat seems to be going on him, what about her?
Surely she would know what goes on at her kennels, wouldn't you think??

Just putting this out there to see what others think about it.
I was thinking about putting forward an option to head office & the 2 clubs that I go to about the dress code for summer.
I feel that now that the weather is getting hotter there should be a Summer Dress Code & a Winter Dress code.
The Summer Dress code would be:

Good black shorts, White shirt, good black shoes/sandles.
Also I feel that the men should also be allowed to have their Polo shirts un-tucked during summer as it gets really hot out on the track & the shirts stick to you from all the sweat.
What are other peoples thought on this?

Agreed Houndfan. The rules are quite clear. They are available to view on the GRNZ website. This matter should not ever be considered trivial, or "pathetic" as quoted above. What is disheartening is that the membership is not united on this matter, and that progress has been painfully slow.
