You're getting grizzly crusty. Let's all tell Dillon to lay off Big Mac and do a jockey that kiwis are not interested in. Even the Aussies are acknowledging and lauding the talent of Macca. A 22yo wins the Slipper, Queen Elizabeth, AJC Oaks, and a host of other big races, nearly pinches the CCup and you want to take him off air? Not a wise move old son. Kiwis are proud of their success on the big stage and it's a feel good for the nation when it happens. I want to hear about All Black success - not Wallaby failure!

Do you really honestly believe you can say "Stakes have gone up"?
My involvement in racing horses include.....
first horse I raced won a $7000 maiden at Hastings  in 1991 cost of training fees was $20 per day - Maiden races are still $7000 in 2014!
My mare ran second in the Group 3 Fillies and Mares race at Hawera in 2005 race worth $70k then (run a couple of weekends ago worth $80k) (Yes I can see the small increase of approx 13%) but the cost of training fees back then was $30 per day compared to $55 per day today farrier bills have also DOUBLED in this time not to mention we didn't pay track fees in those days...........

I've done OK thru the Industry BUT it is doing nothing to excite me about remaining involved and investing in its future.

I would honestly hate to think how much trainers would have to set their training fees at to consider all their daily maintenance and running costs and to aim to make a 20% PROFIT at year's end (not factoring in stake money won) I personally think the majority budget to break even thru training fee costs and their profit is the 10% of prizemoney the horses win during the season.

Personally couldn't believe he was second favourite! Congrats to owners getting a start on the big stage but realistically what had he beaten in Melbourne to warrant starting second fave? Know the owners personally and some are more realistic than others - the horse has "paid its way and earnt the right to start in these races" so good on them.  I know their father (and mother) would have been so proud.....but he was realistically as Cubes would say a "runners chance". (remember what J Mac said after he rode him in Sydney Cup..........

    Race 6
    RACEWAY MOTEL 2040
.......... Trainer F Stammers was questioned regarding the performance of KALGOORLIE BOMBER which dropped out over the concluding stages and was distanced at the finish. In particular Mr Stammers was asked what his intentions were with the gelding over coming weeks as in recent starts KALGOORLIE BOMBER had proved uncompetitive. Mr Stammers in response stated that he had anticipated the track being more rain affected today which did not eventuate. Mr Stammers then stated that his intention is to race KALGOORLIE BOMBER next Thursday at the Tauherenikau Meeting and then reassess his options. Stewards advised Mr Stammers that they had concerns with KALGOORLIE BOMBER’S competiveness and that if there is no improvement then further action may be considered

clearly those you support Steve don't watch Trackside on a Monday . Wonderful auctioneer that he is, the mindless drivel that he subjects his audience to on Monday is remarkable. I feel sorry for Mark Rosanowski trying to give an intelligent opinion on a race while being asked the most inane questions of absolutely no interest to anyone but Steve.

venusserena got a reaction from jack in Thomas Russell
latest words we have heard is Thomas has started to breathe on his own,  but long term prognosis is Thomas will at best be confined to a wheel chair.
Doctors said surgery went as expected!!!!
Thomas expected to be in hospital there for at least next 6 months.
    keep those prayers flowing................

understand the horse Thomas was riding at the time must have thrown its head up striking Thomas in the head and knocking him out hence when he fell off he landed head first (not being conscious to put his hands out to break his fall).
Resulting injury was 5 of the 7 vertebrae in his neck being badly affected/possibly broken......due to have surgery some time today apparently....wishing all the best for prognosis, surgery and the future.

venusserena got a reaction from hedley in Concerns....jockeys
I think one of the biggest concerns for the Thoroughbred Racing Industry in the near to mid term future is going to be number of jockeys around.
It is hard to imagine in 5 years time a high percentage of the current senior riders still being around (weight, age, motivation) and there are very few apprentices successfully riding out their apprenticeships and continuing into the senior ranks.
Without these people we will not have an industry..................

what steps should we be taking in NZ?
    * setting up apprentice training courses in foreign countries?
    * have 1 race meeting in the country on any given day so the same jockeys can fly from racetrack to racetrack..........................
I think something needs to be done now, BE Proactive rather than reactive....before it is too late (like the trades problems in the 80's and again now).
I have been involved in this part of the industry in the past and it was a BIG concern then.....and getting worse by the looks of things..............

venusserena got a reaction from puha in Pacemakers - isn't it time we started using them ?
How can you punish a jockey for setting farcically slow pace? shouldn't you be blaming ones behind for showing no initiative and allowing them too!

Why do they get run at such a slow pace now? I would say majority of the time because jockeys are too scared to go against their plan!

if you had pacemakers then the jockeys wouldn't have to think for themselves....they will know how race will be run and just all sit and wait. At least now on the odd occasion the jockey uses his top 4 inches they can"steal" a good race by outsmarting the others.

The word I get is that the Trentham track will be perfect tomorrow.  Outside expertise has been sought.
    Especially after last week's debacle.
The Trentham track manager should be well pleased with current employment law.  These days it is exceedingly complex and expensive to get rid of a phuckwit.

Fasthorse, Tropical, Centrofold, others if there was nothing wrong with track.....why have they desperately decided now to put 30mls of water on track in 24 hours?
Surely if they were happy with track they would (nature allowing) try to produce similar track conditions for next 2 days racing there?!

I was referring to others posting that times on the day were no quicker than previous years.....when track was good3 and yesterday was fast1...so they were inferring that track wasn't so hard as people were saying, because times were comparable! best horses weren't necessarily winning yesterday.
when starting gates guys had trouble getting their pegs into the ground for the first race - tells you track was not what it should be at the start of a Premier days racing!
It was a disgrace! head/s should roll or someONE should "man" up and admit they f#&*#^ up!

Just because track is rated 1 instead of 3 doesn't mean horses run quicker times.......are the best horses winning? if the good horses aren't hitting out and the best horse on the day wins, it doesn't mean track records should be broken because its the hardest track conditions we've raced on.

When people say box four horses say A, B, C and D, they mean take the 4 combinations i.e ABC, ABD, ACD, BCD not box them as you would in a trifecta or first 4.
