  1. where these other comments are . The problem is many of us have had a gutsful of the he's nice guy brigade , give him a chance etc etc. This industry is being killed by incompetent nice guys. The reality is the new minister of racing has been chosen because he is merely next cab of the rank and the fact that he has no knowledge of racing is irrelevant to the government.
  2. on 22.4.09 you said " a very good man with a lot of experience" that was the entire post. The problem with Foss is exactly what you now say your reservations were about Brown .
  3. berri you know nothing about this bloke but you had met andrew brown and assured us he would do a good job. Well 2 years later we are still paying this bloke who by getting sacked managed to get his remmuneration up to over 1 million p.a. for the time he worked around in his suit. The industry now has a minister with no racing knowledge , likewise the chairman of NZRB and a buffoon as acting CEO of NZRB at a time when the state of the industry is worsening daily. The only hope is the new NZTR leadership is outstanding and comes up with a viable sustainable plan which is listened to by the above 3 and acted upon by them where required.
  4. to waste 5 or 6 hours at the track, especially when they can sit at home and watch whenever they want. The funding by NZTR was idiotic with emphasis on on course turnover then clubs hitting the punters with GOLPS and GOG . This not only didn't help clubs as they were not giving the punters value for money but did absolutely NOTHING to encourage them to bet horses on a regular basis. I note in Melbourne the industry has demanded that food and beverage prices are reduced .
  5. the industry is funded substantially by OFF COURSE betting which has no resources applied to it while all sorts of cunning plans have been employed to achieve a small reduction in on course turnover in the last 5 years . We need to accept that OFF COURSE betting is far more important that on course and punters are not going to return to the track in great numbers on a regular basis.
  6. Foss has remarkably the same skills as Carter and taken on his portfolios, how fortunate to have two people with similar expertise in civil defence and racing .
  7. that has managed to pee away and extra $20 million p.a. from tax relief plus $20 million from NZRB and NZTR reserves in the last 4 years. Raving on about selling courses is fine but if it is done on an ad hoc basis any money gained will be quickly wasted. Until we understand our customers we can't come up with a rational plan to improve the industry. Yet for some reason best known to our leaders they have no interest seemingly the motivations of their customers. For example there was cries of shock and horror from AB and MS when NZRB survey revealed how lowly the general public rated horse racing yet what has been done about that in the last 12 months.
  8. do we really want "the government" meddling in the industry. what do you want them to do specifically? who in government has the industry knowledge to make sensible decisions ?
  9. Protecting their own little empires and their cronies. Carter and Stiassny then created another flaming empire the RIU whose costs will be outrageous . Stiassny chose a totally unsuitable person to run the NZRB at an absolutely crucial time for the industry and then allowed that person 18 months to show us all how incompetent he was. Now he has been replaced by a buffoon who is every bit as incompetent. The result of the Stiassny years is a rapidly DECREASING turnover ,massive increases in costs and a diminishing of NZRB reserves by some $20 million. However, I do wish he did have the guts and more importantly the nous to make the crucial hard decisions to save the industry because as zzz rightly points out the self interest and cronyism in this is slowly killing it.
  10. Is Auckland Racing whose turnover has totally fallen away in the last 5 or 6 years . This is the industry flagship which is given the highest rate of return on their turnover from NZTR but performing so dismally in attracting punters dollars. Someone needs to ask questions like what the hell is going on at this club NOW. Not in 2 years time when they have run out of money. having peed away all the Takanini money.
  11. the people running the industry have no idea what punters want and seem totally disinterested in finding out. That we didn't manage to develop an all weather track when we were flush with winstons tax relief is a damning indictment on the industrys leaders.
  12. about tinsley's ride . My complaint was the way Tinsley held her up whereas the other 29 horses that placed that day were asked to go at the top of the straight and hit with the whip. But more importantly the ridiculous bet the TAB put on regarding margins . It looked like Tinsley was trying to ensure that the filly did not win by more than 4 lengths. Fortunately that bet seems to have disappeared as quickly as it appeared thank goodness.
  13. you are the great analyst. No comparision whatsoever in the track conditions e.g. Trentham was soft 1.11.79 as opposed to 1.17.25 in the bog today. She never looked to be travelling in the ground and was under pressure most of the way but responded very gamely when opie hit her which left me in no doubt that she would have won at Trentham if he had gone for her sooner or given her a tap. From the race at Trentham nothing else seems to have won since who knows what this lot will do in the future. But the trainer asked for her not to be hit in her debut so he should have no complaints from that and the good news is the bizarre winning margins option seems to have disppeared thank goodness.
  14. a whole lot of old conservative guys with fading memories . What is very sad is that we just let the industry continue to decline without making any meaningful attempt to recaputure some of the old glory days . With the next 4 or 5 months of plodding around in the mud it probably is just as well we can think back to the great horses of the past . We certainly don't breed horses anymore that just love racing in the mud. Oh for a stallion like Kurdistan who not only bred 2yo's sprinters, stayers hurdlers steepechasers and mudders but a horse who after winning in the mud in July at Trentham went on to win the Melbourne Cup and then after breaking down came back to win a Group 1 WFA race in Australia.
  15. but dont let the facts get in the way of a good story.
