Go and have a good look at the replay Gubes. He was luckless.
Barrier one was always going to be very awkward for him and his position in the race was dictated by the horse in the blue clolours in front of him hence where he was positioned back in a bad spot turning in. He was blocked in the straight and had to come across heels and it was pleasing to see when he did get clear air some nice acceleration before having to be eased short of the line when running out of room yet again.
As mentioned it was good to see that turn of foot again when he did get some clear air. He won't be long returning to the winner's circle.

    I sit corrected, my friend.
Clive Graham was a racing journalist (wrote for the Daily Express under the pseudonym "The Scout"). He was an integral part of the BBC racing coverage in the 60s and early 70s alongside Peter O'Sullivan who did the commentary and also wrote for the Express. Graham was the form analyst and paddock commentator and he and O'Sullivan covered BBC racing until Graham died in the early 70s after which we had the appearance of Julian Wilson and recently retired jockey Jimmy Lindley (who died in March 2022) who covered the flat racing.
On ITV we had John Rickman who wrote as Gimcrack for the Daily Sketch. He had worked briefly on the BBC with O'Sullivan on television in the early 50s until ITV started in 1955 when he fronted their racing coverage for over 20 years. He was very much old school and always greeted the viewers with "Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen" and an extravagant doff of the trilby he always wore.
The 1970s was the Golden Age of television racing coverage up here - both BBC and ITV covered racing and both had both midweek and Saturday afternoon coverage. They did it slightly differently as you might imagine - BBC more restrained with very little mention of betting in the early years and the races often having to fit around test cricket, golf or rugby matches. ITV had a segment wholly devoted to racing in mid afternoon with the iconic "ITV 7" (which has been resurrected since 2017) in which the public could enter to win a cash prize if they could puzzle the winners of the seven televised races. ITV did betting as they recognised most of their viewers enjoyed having a flutter on the horses.
The Clive Graham Stakes was run at Goodwood in memory of the BBC racing man until it became the Festival Stakes in the mid-90s. While BALMERINO was a very good winner, the best was probably future Arc winner MTOTO in 1988. The race still exists - it's Listed and run at Goodwood's May meeting.

Balmerino did win two races in England Stodge. 1977 Vadoe Stakes and the 1978 Clive Graham Stakes both run at Goodwood.

I don't suppose someone has a screenshot of the divdends of the last R7 at Tauherenikau today.
Surely the place dividend for the 2nd horse Sol De Otono at $11.80 is incorrect???     Should have been more like $1.80.
The filly was paying just over $5 to win a few minutes brfore the race when I looked and NZTR show the filly paying $5.80 as the win dividend at the jump.
The quinella looks ok with the $5.40 winner Phone A Friend with Sol De Otono at $17.10 and the trifecta at $97.00 seems in order also.
Sol De Otono was first selection by the TAB, Bevan Sweeney made her a Best Bet on the day and she was also first selection in the Race Form.
That place dividend of $11.80 is just sticking out like the proverable.........

That is unfair blaming the jockey's. They are the ones putting life and limb on the line and I have had communication from the track that under the circumstances the right decision was made. Perhaps if the meeting had started a few hours earlier than it did they may have got through the card.

    Interesting comments Gruff.

Molly Bloom has won four of her eight starts and of those four wins I have had her on top in three of them including her as a special bet of the weekend when she won the 1000 Guineas at Riccarton. In her other win on Saturday I had her second selection.
Here are the write ups for those four wins.

    R6    16    MOLLY BLOOM    $2.00FF  (15/9/2023 Taupo)

She has had one start back in April at Avondale when she finished powerfully for a very close third behind two very nice horses. She was given a nice quiet trial at Avondale where she finished fourth and she is going to be very hard to beat in this. For multiples

    R7     9    MOLLY BLOOM    $4.00FF   (18/11/2023  Riccarton)

She is a filly with plenty of ability and who has been unlucky in three of her four career starts including her last two particularly in the G2 Soliloquy Stakes at Pukekohe last start. Today she steps up over 1600m on a big track and if she can get clear air at the top of the straight and go through her gears she can boom home over them.

    R8    1    MOLLY BLOOM    $1.90FF   26/12/23   Pukekohe)

I have her on top as she won the 1000 Guineas with a top run for us at Riccarton last month which had been preceded by a very unlucky fourth in the Soliloquy Stakes here in October. Not sure that she should be at $1.90 but she is a nice filly who has the NZ Oaks as her target at Trentham in March. Look for her to be hitting the line strongly.

    R4    4    SUDBINA     $5.00FF    (10/2/24  Te Rapa

This filly has won her last two starts over 1400m and 1600m. The latter win was a good effort at Trentham in the Desert Gold Stakes after coming from last. She steps up to 2000m for this as do a number of other fillies but I feel she will get the distance and I do like the fact she has the ace draw. If she can jump and possie up in the trail and then get clear air at the top of the straight she could then prove hard to run down. For multiples:

1  -  Molly Bloom  -  The 1000 Guineas winner Ellerslie was always going to present problems for her last time when she finished fourth. Here over 2000m she will get every chance.

I was prepared to put Sudbina on top on Saturday over Molly as Molly’s run at Ellerslie wasn’t the best and created some doubt hence I put her in for second.  I believe that the evidence above clearly shows I have rated Molly Bloom pretty well and reiterate four wins with three first selection and a second selection.

FYI   I did not have her first selection when she was beaten two starts ago at Ellerslie.

    R6    12    ORCHESTRAL     $3.50FF    (27/1/24  Ellerslie)

She is a smart filly coming in off the back of an impressive win over 1600m at Pukekohe last start and has the ace draw for this with James Mac to ride. I can see her three back on the fence in the running and if James can give her clear air early in the straight then she can let down with her turn of foot and prove hard to beat. Her work this week has been super and she is cherry ripe for this. For multiples:

10  -  Molly Bloom  -  She has won three of her last four and is a top class filly. She will get back and look to run home over them. Whether the post comes up too soon for her on the track is the question mark.

By the way I claim no expertise. My selections are but one person's opinion and I am at least prepared to offer them pre-race not afterwards.

    Gruff said .......

Memps, have you actually seen those instructions. Most know
    .Being relaxed is intergral.
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Reckon we are fighting a losing battle Gruffy -Boy ......not many AVID horse racing people on here actually realise how important the relaxation and breathing during a race is integral to success.
However it was good to get other people's opinions.
    In a re-trial the jury said .....
Williams - Guilty of a bad ride (and admitted it to the owners) .....sentenced to 30 days without food and a bucket of Revlon day n night face cream.
Jimmysstar - NOT Guilty .... and when he addressed the jury he said ....Ladies and Gentlemen being ridden out of my comfort zone the first 800 mtrs left me breathless .....not to mention that fcker on my outside annoying me the whole way until straightening....so when Craggy Face asked me to go again I just couldn't breath properly and that meant I couldn't quicken when he asked me to and I'm sorry for that ......maybe next time if I am ridden more conservatively I will find the line in my traditional fashion and salute the judge.
Terry Bailey (TB to his mates) said he was on air one day and an insurance tout called him to try and sell him a policy. He said 'Listen ....don't you EVER  EVER  EVER  EVER  EVER  EVER  EVER  EVER call this number again' and hung up....... which is exactly what Kieran Maher will say to the next jockey thats legged up on Jimmysstar and all future hoops thereafter ....don't you EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER hunt this horse early.....he must be ridden in his comfort zone....just jump out and let him relax and he will find the line for you.
Pogo (in the Gallery) yelled out ....BUT your honour they didn't go that quickly.....to which the judge replied ....Mr Pogo ...sit down and listen up.....your outburst is completely irrelevant and unwarranted....as every horse is different just like you are to other human beings.... but at least you have a sense of humour which is a good attribute....and sadly lacking in others. Objection over-ruled.
And here endith the Jimmysstar controversy...... Jimmy was not guilty.... Willow was guilty....Pogo was issued a warning for disrupting the court.....and the judge went home for dinner chuckling to himself.

I backed her at her very first start at Te Rapa in July 2018 in a 2yo race and had made her top selection for the BGP.
She was at $30.00 & $6.00 and finished second and she then won her next two starts in NZ before crossing the ditch and having an illustrious career.

Gubellini nailed it .....its all about the 'breathing' ....and when a back runner is ridden for speed like Jimmysstar was yesterday he immediately becomes vulnerable .....and so it proved as he was annoyed all the way and didn't settle or get into his breathing pattern.
Yes ....Willow had a 'Barry Crocker' ....and the losers were the punters who put their faith in him to do better!  ....There are 130 variables in every horse race .....and thats just one of them....a horse MUST be ridden in its comfort zone to produce its best.
Feeling for those punters that did their cash.... you were rorted.
