I would be interested to know a ball park figure as to how many jumpers are in work for this season. The jumps scene in the South Island I don't believe is that flash esp. steeplechasers.
They don't have jumps racing down South bar the Riccarton Grand national meeting.

If you read the NZTR staement I put up for Insider a few posts ago it states they will be back for April 27th.

This morning I had the opportunity to call into the Hastings racecourse, peep over the running rail and see what’s happening.
Guess what Leggy and Chiksnsmack it’s exactly as I explained and expected.

Once again the truth is that it’s a renovation of the Hastings track , not a rebuild!
Anyway, from what I could see the grass has been cut right back (hence it browned off) debris was removed, divots filled, fertiliser applied, under sewed and is now in the process of being irrigated for maximum grass growth in time for the HB Cup meeting.
Interestingly, the irrigation was of a moveable variety and was placed in the very centre of the track for the full circumference of the track so that both sides of the course got equal watering, subject of course to the wind.
The Hawkes Bay Cup meeting is to be run at Otaki on Saturday 13th:
Saturday 13 April
This meeting will now be an Otaki-Maori RC Licence at Otaki (previously Hawke’s Bay). The programme advertised, including the Hawke’s Bay Cup and City of Napier Sprint, will be held on this day to avoid any disruption to both programming and the black-type pattern previously advertised. The stake for what was advertised as The Poverty Bay Cup will revert to $40,000. The Poverty Bay Cup will now be run on the Open 2100m race at the Hawke’s Bay meeting on Saturday 27 April for the previously advertised stake of $55,000.

Bold front running jummper who won both the NZ Grand National Hurdles and the Great Northern Hurdles in the same year 1985.
13 wins 3 on the flat, four over hurdles and six over the steeples.

I think I heard that in The Cup they went the last 600 in 35 and change. A race time of 3m 24.38 suggests that My Maebelline Girl set up a gentle pace, for the field to finish so quickly. Particularly in a 3200 event. That being so one must extend hearty congratulations to Joe Doyle. An exceptionally canny ride by that man. We are still all learning about the new Ellerslie track, but Joe Doyle has learned a lot quicker than many others.
1963 When Great Sensation won his third Wellington Cup in row beating Stipulate by a length and half.
Stipulate actually went out favourite and was looking to win the NZ Cup, Auckland Cup and Wellington Cup in the same season.

Go and have a good look at the replay Gubes. He was luckless.
Barrier one was always going to be very awkward for him and his position in the race was dictated by the horse in the blue clolours in front of him hence where he was positioned back in a bad spot turning in. He was blocked in the straight and had to come across heels and it was pleasing to see when he did get clear air some nice acceleration before having to be eased short of the line when running out of room yet again.
As mentioned it was good to see that turn of foot again when he did get some clear air. He won't be long returning to the winner's circle.

Balmerino did win two races in England Stodge. 1977 Vadoe Stakes and the 1978 Clive Graham Stakes both run at Goodwood.

Terrific. He was a good staying horse who enjoyed the big roomy Trentham track.
There he won the 1966 NZ St Leger Stakes 2800m, 1967 Trentham Stakes 2400m and the 1967 Chalmers Handicap 3200m.

I don't suppose someone has a screenshot of the divdends of the last R7 at Tauherenikau today.
Surely the place dividend for the 2nd horse Sol De Otono at $11.80 is incorrect??? Should have been more like $1.80.
The filly was paying just over $5 to win a few minutes brfore the race when I looked and NZTR show the filly paying $5.80 as the win dividend at the jump.
The quinella looks ok with the $5.40 winner Phone A Friend with Sol De Otono at $17.10 and the trifecta at $97.00 seems in order also.
Sol De Otono was first selection by the TAB, Bevan Sweeney made her a Best Bet on the day and she was also first selection in the Race Form.
That place dividend of $11.80 is just sticking out like the proverable.........

The NZ Derby was the amalgamation of two races in 1973.....The Great Northern Derby run since 1875 at Ellerslie and the NZ Derby run at Riccarton since 1860.

Perhaps but will the Northern horses want to travel that far on Sunday after travelling down to Hastings and back today and then 13 days later travel to Trentham for the Oaks? Looking at the calendar there isn't a lot of options.

The joke that is NZ Racing
That is unfair blaming the jockey's. They are the ones putting life and limb on the line and I have had communication from the track that under the circumstances the right decision was made. Perhaps if the meeting had started a few hours earlier than it did they may have got through the card.
