Yes, I don't see how simply resowing it can possibly remedy the recurrent issues. It is not the grass that's the problem. And even if that's all they've done, there is surely no way it will be ready for racing before next season. I await the detailed plan from NZTR with interest.

If you read the NZTR staement I put up for Insider a few posts ago it states they will be back for April 27th.

The only plsce I've seen it mentioned is in another thread on Race Cafe, with regards the Place 6 AND the Pick 6 being quietly buried.

I had an email from them.

    Dear Ted,

This year is going to be a big one for us here at the TAB.

As we prepare to provide our customers with some of the new things they’ve been asking for, we’ve also had to look at some of the products we currently offer TAB customers. As part of this, Fixed Odds First4, Pick6 and Place6 bet types will no longer be offered from today, Wednesday 13 March.

We can see that these are bet types you’ve used recently and understand you might be disappointed by their removal. We have lots of great alternative bet types for you to consider:

    For Fixed Odds First4:
    · Tote First4
    · Fixed Trifectas

    For Pick6:
    · Quaddies

    For Place6:
    · Fixed Odds Multis

Thanks for continuing to be a valued customer of TAB.

    Hastings update.

This morning I had the opportunity to call into the Hastings racecourse, peep over the running rail and see what’s happening.

Guess what Leggy and Chiksnsmack it’s exactly as I explained and expected.

Just because (as always Leggy) wants to read more into it, or change what the writer has written doesn’t make him right!

Once again the truth is that it’s a renovation of the Hastings track , not a rebuild!

Anyway, from what I could see the grass has been cut right back (hence it browned off) debris was removed, divots filled, fertiliser applied, under sewed  and is now in the process of being irrigated for maximum grass growth in time for the HB Cup meeting.

Interestingly, the irrigation was of a moveable variety and was placed in the very centre of the track for the full circumference of the track so that both sides of the course got equal watering, subject of course to the wind.

The Hawkes Bay Cup meeting is to be run at Otaki on Saturday 13th:

    Saturday 13 April

This meeting will now be an Otaki-Maori RC Licence at Otaki (previously Hawke’s Bay). The programme advertised, including the Hawke’s Bay Cup and City of Napier Sprint, will be held on this day to avoid any disruption to both programming and the black-type pattern previously advertised. The stake for what was advertised as The Poverty Bay Cup will revert to $40,000. The Poverty Bay Cup will now be run on the Open 2100m race at the Hawke’s Bay meeting on Saturday 27 April for the previously advertised stake of $55,000.

Rdytdy, I should have remembered Stipulate.  I saw him get beaten by Great Sensation on my first visit to Trentham.  The top deck of the public stand that day was shoulder to shoulder punters.  Nowadays it is closed.

I think I heard that in The Cup they went the last 600 in 35 and change.  A race time of 3m 24.38 suggests that My Maebelline Girl set up a gentle pace, for the field to finish so quickly.  Particularly in a 3200 event.  That being so one must extend hearty congratulations to Joe Doyle.  An exceptionally  canny ride by that man.  We are still all learning about the new Ellerslie track, but Joe Doyle has learned a lot quicker than many others.

1963 When Great Sensation won his third Wellington Cup in row beating Stipulate by a length and half.

Stipulate actually went out favourite and was looking to win the NZ Cup, Auckland Cup and Wellington Cup in the same season.

Begs the question: Is he a contender or a pretender?

Go and have a good look at the replay Gubes. He was luckless.

Barrier one was always going to be very awkward for him and his position in the race was dictated by the horse in the blue clolours in front of him hence where he was positioned back in a bad spot turning in. He was blocked in the straight and had to come across heels and it was pleasing to see when he did get clear air some nice acceleration before having to be eased short of the line when running out of room yet again.

As mentioned it was good to see that turn of foot again when he did get some clear air. He won't be long returning to the winner's circle.

Interesting to see mention of BALMERINO.

He was one of the few who came to the northern hemisphere and held his form.

He may not have won in his European campaign (he lost an Italian Group 1 in the stewards room) but he was second in the Eclipse and the Coronation Cup while his best run in Europe saw him chase home ALLEGED in the 1977 Arc de Triomphe.

Unusually, the Arc that year was run on fast ground and Lester Piggott made every yard on the Leger runner up judging the 2400m pace brilliantly. BALMERINO, trained by John Dunlop and ridden by Australian jockey Ron Hutchinson, himself very much in the twilight of his career, ran second in front of the Jockey Club winner CRYSTAL PALACE, the 1977 English Leger winner DUNFERMLINE and the 1976 Leger winner CROW.

ALLEGED was a stable mate of THE MINSTREL who had won the 1977 Derby and Irish Derby but by the latter part of the season ALLEGED had improved significantly to become the main Vincent O'Brien colt. After winning a second Arc in 1978. ALLEGED got a rating of 138 (for comparison, FRANKEL got 140).

BALMERINO was perhaps unlucky to come up against such a talent but ran with great distinction and was himself given a rating of 133 by Timeform.

Balmerino did win two races in England Stodge. 1977 Vadoe Stakes and the 1978 Clive Graham Stakes both run at Goodwood.

  9. Terrific. He was a good staying horse who enjoyed the big roomy Trentham track.

There he won the 1966 NZ St Leger Stakes 2800m,  1967 Trentham Stakes 2400m and the 1967 Chalmers Handicap  3200m.

  10. I don't suppose someone has a screenshot of the divdends of the last R7 at Tauherenikau today.

Surely the place dividend for the 2nd horse Sol De Otono at $11.80 is incorrect???     Should have been more like $1.80.

The filly was paying just over $5 to win a few minutes brfore the race when I looked and NZTR show the filly paying $5.80 as the win dividend at the jump.

The quinella looks ok with the $5.40 winner Phone A Friend with Sol De Otono at $17.10 and the trifecta at $97.00 seems in order also.

Sol De Otono was first selection by the TAB, Bevan Sweeney made her a Best Bet on the day and she was also first selection in the Race Form.

That place dividend of $11.80 is just sticking out like the proverable.........

They need to run the Lowland at Tauherenikau Sunday, surely

Perhaps but will the Northern horses want to travel that far on Sunday after travelling down to Hastings and back today and then 13 days later travel to Trentham for the Oaks?  Looking at the calendar there isn't a lot of options.

Rain was always forecast today in Hastings so lets Abandon ALL meetings where it might rain why even waste everyones time when the jockeys are going to pull the pin but still get their riding fees

The joke that is NZ Racing

That is unfair blaming the jockey's. They are the ones putting life and limb on the line and I have had communication from the track that under the circumstances the right decision was made. Perhaps if the meeting had started a few hours earlier than it did they may have got through the card.

Ted as you know I am a recidivist jockey defender! Three mitigating circumstances: He was the lowest rated horse in the field (85). He was only having his 7th start- the other runners had 226 races between them- seasoned tough campagners- in boxing parlance a bit light throwing a middleweight into the ring v a heavyweight. When you change a back runners racing style to on the pace invariably their breathing pattern goes out of kilter and they are vulnerable late.

    Hi Gubes

You remain true to form (as expected) and will defend a rider to the hilt no matter what the circumstances. Riders are human and as such oft to make mistakes, you will see them every race day to be fair and that is understood. However when you see something so completely wrong a comment is warranted.

Looking at a number of racing stories in Australia media this morning there has only been condemantion of the ride and as you are aware Craig's ride has been slated by trainer Ciaron Maher and the owners. By Craig's own admission he f#*ked up and has apologised.

Unfortunately there are no mitigagting circumstances in the tactics used, he went forward from the get go and worked to finally get to the front completely against instructions and the horse's normal racing pattern. Your last sentence only illustrates why this option was wrong.

I just hope yesterday's ride does not undo all the good work that has gone into the horse. Unfortunately we haven't seen Giga Kick since and it would be a shame if Jimmysstar has been affected by the ride yesterday. I certainly hope not and hope he can bounce back when ridden properly next start.

Between you and me I am not expecting Craig Williams to be listed as the rider.   :D

    "I rest my case"??

Makes it sound like you're suggesting that a guy who has ridden over 2,000 winners and 70+ Group 1 wins, has to answer to you for a judgement call he made during the running of a race!!??

    Well the evidence is compelling.

Ciaron Maher who trains the horse was annoyed and frustrated withe the ride and the accused has pleaded guilty.

“Completely foreign territory for the horse, Disappointing for the punters and the owners and I know Ciaron is pretty annoyed and frustrated.

“To Craig’s credit he came back and apologized. He said I made a blue with the ride.”
