Greyhound racing is the bulwark for the horse codes. Anyone who doesn't see that a ban on greyhound racing is a stepping stone to a ban on harness, then gallops, then farming, then pets, is an idiot.
If you support anything towards the end of that list, you must stand up for those things towards the start of it under the banner of "Don't tell us what to to do and we won't tell you what to do".

An interesting past couple of years since Covid ruled the roost, everyone thought the Genius Michael Jackson ws crazy wering a mask, weren't even allowed in a bank with a beanie or sunglasses  on, now can't go in a bank without mask, covering face so unidentifiable, crooks have had a roaring time, masked up to the hilt still so if caught on camera can't ID them what a joke the whole shamozzle's been.  Virus are ALWAYS around & while I understand those compromised it was the same risk prior to Covid & from here in out. Masks have been proven to be ineffective & in some circles cause issues.  Freedom of choice should reign,  i liken it to smokers if ya don't like ingesting the krap from 2nd hand smoke don't hang with those who partake we encounter virus all the time but if our immunity isn't compromised it passes us by without even being aware of contact.  Future virus only get stronger the more humans indulge in Pharmaceuticals

So, in some eyes it may seem but at the end the day the greyhound code is well and alive for the future. The improvement in the code has been big over the last 5-10yrs and only getting better.
GRNZ is pleased to announce that stakes will be increasing from 14 August 2023.

Thanks to the increased distributions from the TAB NZ and Entain strategic partnership, we will be injecting an additional $2 million into stakes next season. The effect of this is that the prizemoney for every single race will increase by $400.

Following GRNZ Board discussions, it has been decided that in every race:
1st will receive an extra $240 2nd will receive an extra $100 3rd will receive an extra $60 We have decided to distribute this across all classes of races, so that as many participants as possible will benefit from the increase, especially given the rising costs of living.

Over the next two months, we will also explore other promotional initiatives with TAB NZ and Entain, and will keep you updated on any further positive developments in this area.

Right am I the only one here that will state greyhound racing isnt going here and is staying.
There are two reasons for my statement.
1 - Labour has pushed what ever they have wanted to in their current term. Really couldn't do it before the election?. That to me = bollocks and a middle finger to the one in green Chloe. Deals had been done.
2 - Entain I highly doubt signed up to a two code deal as I believe we out do harness. Greyhound racing is a huge, fast and good turnover for them and a very exportable code.

If you're starting from limited knowledge and connections, I'd start with finding a local trainer. They can guide you through the whole process and may have dogs/shares available.
I'd look to buy an already-racing dog rather than pups. The downside is that if someone thinks they have an open-class dog then they're not likely to sell so you're going to be racing in lower grades, which is still fun and financially can work out alright (some dogs who never get past c3 still manage to pay their way). Pups on the other hand are lottery tickets; you MIGHT buy a pup who ends up open class or group class, or you might buy one who'd rather be a lapdog than a racedog.
The NZ infrastructure is also different than Australia. In Oz you can buy a pup and send it to a dedicated rearing property, where all they do is raise pups. Then you can send it to a breaker, where all they do is educate young dogs. Then you can send it to a pretrainer who gets it fit and ready to go before finally going to the trainer. In NZ breeders tend to breed to race and handle most/all aspects of the process themselves. So there aren't any dedicated rearers who make their money taking on outside pups because there aren't many people who breed/buy pups and don't raise them themselves (though you can probably find someone willing to take a pup on if you go down this path). There also aren't typically a lot of pups available for sale.
Here's the list of public trainers in NZ; you can get in touch and let them know your situation and if they can't help you out they can probably point you in the direction of someone who can. https://www.grnz.co.nz/trainers/find-public-trainer.aspx

Can someone please get the Minister for Racing to read Jim Edwards' article published in the SST of April 11 and headed
"Fear not, greyhounds are protected and cared for"
Listening to the Minister's comments on tv, and hearing them again  this morning,  I can only surmise that he is being misinformed.

Next thing we will have to ban any sports where humans get hurt or worse, Cricket will be banned asap. I hate seeing any animal hurt, or any type of cruelty, and it's a very small percentage that ruin it for others. But we all know greyhounds love running, and we aren't riding them with whips either.

That's what happens in a monopoly, not many can compete, and when the monopoly falters there is not much left. NZGR chooses to ignore the well being and promotion of the sport and just plod along

Those were the days! When people were racing for the sentimental value of certain trophies/ribbons and for the love of it as much as anything else.
Reminds me of a Trophy everyone wanted to win back in the day at the Manawatu track.. the Applejack boy cup. C2 middle distance if I remember rightly and I think the trophy was huge hence the reason people targeted it on the racing calendar, I'm sure the Cobain kennel would've won a few Applejack Boy's.

    Well before my time too.
The Simpson Challenge Stakes was a c3 520m run at Hutt Park in August (at least in 1992 and 1993).
The Mayor's Cup was a c4 at the same track and distance in February (in 1993).

Capable Lass (one of the only names I can make out on either trophy) won the former in '92 and the latter in '93, for A J Cobain. I only know of Nancy Cobain, so maybe someone else can fill us in.
Capable Lass ran 2nd in a Kingston Cup, NZ Stayers Cup, and Auckland Cup. She won a "NZ Cup Distance" (Addington InvD in July), NZ Futurity, Waterloo Cup, and Silver Collar.

Cheers Gerter, been awhile since any form of tips went up.
Cant see anything at Cambridge spins my wheels. Addington, can really only see two chances.
Race 6, box 1 She's For Us, she did run second to Dyna Dave in a two dog race last year and only lost by a length and a half but the time ran was 29.70.
Race 9, box 1 Select Trick, pretty much a given but we all know that there is no such things as 100% winners.

Those heats (7 x Cup) and (12 x Galaxy) are/were as cut-throat as you will ever see. But so exciting.
Well done, Udy and Cottam winning 4 today and the Faheys 4 yesterday. Tremendous achievements for both training partnerships.
Next week is a whole new ball game. Bolty at 4? Don't know. It is his second-phase acceleration that is so phenomenal but, of course, you have to have some clear air to generate it.
I hear both Robson and Dyna Dave have got the coveted one. Robson loves Addington and Dyna Dave is still looking for that elusive Group 1.
    Can't wait.
Family first, lad27  Good on you. Nice to see you have two nippers now. Cheers

Gary you need to take into account when making comments of who the top northern trainers are the likes of the class of dog they have access to either dogs that are bought by owners who can  afford to out lay the dollars or have the breeding set up to produce litters which gives them a better chance of getting good dogs to train. There are a number of trainers in the north who I view do a excellent job with the type of dog they race. Keeping in mind that a number of them are racing 2nd tier dogs from the 2 biggest breeders in NZ. Gary cant undersatnd how you left the Craiks off your list they have been one if not one of the best trainers in the North for the last 30 odd years.
Anyway Gary I fear for the future of the northern region as there are not enough the younger generation taking  it on the costs of land etc to set up is just to much and the money is not there to meet comitments.
Also the board are making far reaching decesions which will come back and bite them in the ass i.e. import fees which I feel they are being leaned on by outside influences.

Dear Mauro, Sean and the Board   I sit here today typing this on a Sunday been my day off which is always a family day but I'm in such a annoyed mood I need to put this together so I can carry on the day in a much more pleasant way. First off the greyhound board playing burry your heads in the sand and say nothing to media is nothing new to me as have been in the code for coming up 12yrs. However your inability as a C.E.O. and the current board shows a complete lack of the feeling out there for the grassroots people up and down the country. Now greyhound racing in N.Z. usually follows Australia's lead with most matters and occasionally they try something of ours but you dropped the ball on this one. Weather Cole is guilty or not will sort itself in the future however how the board have handled it is piss poor. The thing that really grinds my gears and I'm sure plenty of people in the greyhound code is the way that live baiting in Australia was dealt with, disqualification and dogs deregistered with anyone been on site of that particular raid were gone burgers, fair or not. It showed some effort from the leaders of the code at the time to basically save face with the public and were prepared to take that issues on later down the track. Now the Greens have publically stated they don't want the greyhound code anymore, no real news there but if the next election is tight and push comes to shove regarding deals then where do you think we all will be ????? Don't take the example of greyhound racing N.S.W. as they all looked like a bunch of dicks for doing what the entire leadership structure of G.R.N.Z. is doing currently - NOTHING!. Grant and Baird went bye bye and the only reason for that wasn't great leadership from the people that are in charge of the sport it was because the grassroots participant got up in arms, there shit sorted, and the right people in their circles and saved the code in N.S.W. Hell even Rodeo N.Z. have a media spokes person and their are hammered every year by the anti's. I want all of you today to grab a cuppa, head outside by yourself and have a dam good think about what is happening to this beautiful sport. Because if nothing is done fast you all will be grabbing a cuppa, sitting outside and thinking to yourselves I should have done more .....   One upset grassroots L.P. from Timaru   Regards     Marek Dunne
