All the best with the horses tomorrow.
Colors look good on the screen!  (and will look even better returning to scale riding along next to the Clerk ... )
    Cheers, J
PS: those Burgundys haven't been going too bad lately eh ....

Scooby I was reluctant to bother replying to that but can I just say - there wouldn't even be a racecafe if the only ones allowed an opinion here were people who had done it +/- been champions at it ...
And I can't be bothered offering my credentials to try to justify what I thought was a respectfully expressed observation ...

Congratulations on your win at Avondale today.
Didn't follow the races closely today but noticed you standing in the stirrups for quite a distance as you rode down to the gates - hands held high with your grip on the horse's mouth being used to balance yourself in this upright position.
Pretty hard on a horse's mouth to ride this way ... have a look sometime at a rider like Chris Johnson and how kind he is to his horses and what beautiful hands he has ... not only is this a kind way to ride - but it often pays dividends and you regularly see Chris get the best out of his mounts without punishing them.  And some owners are a bit particular about seeing their horses treated well ... I know it makes a difference to me and who I like to see aboard mne ...
Just my 2 cents worth to take or leave as you please ...  all the best, J

Chevy - been there in the past also and no complaints re the Haunui team.  Pretty professional outfit from my experience.
Treat - I hear ya!  Really I do believe the luck sometimes rolls like that ... I tell ya - horses have a million ways to break your heart.   You have to be resilient to last a day in this game.  I've not had the best of fortune 2017 to be fair - but it's now 2018 and I'm full of hope once again - fed up the mares today and told them they better have champs on board or else!!
Hee hee ... best of luck to you.  And remember - like I was told a long time ago by an old sage - good horses come from good horses - champions come from anywhere.
    J.
PS:  Chevy - maybe we'll meet some day and not even know it - hopefully at the races though and not at the insolvency court ...  .. all the best in your endeavors also. Keep in touch during 2018 - enjoy your contributions here.

IMO small breeders get hammered.  A few dollars off a service fee here and there but otherwise no discounts (and at times, inferior service) from the various providers they need to patronise in order to keep and breed horses.  The bills are astronomical even for 1 or 2 mares.  Sometimes it feels like we are subsidising the studs.  And most of us don't have a pretty little 50 acre block on the edge of town to sell off to release some funds ...
I acknowledge that the big boys are in it for the money and it's a business for them to run the best they can.  But I wonder if their lack of altruism is contributing to the death of breeding the NZ TB - that if they had a different attitude towards "home" breeders, that things would be in slightly better shape?

Needless to say - I don't have an Eagle Mountain mare but have nevertheless enjoyed reading the breeding buffs' opinions.
I see Nas' point re not "over-mating" your mare - it is a valid point of view because it's easy not to see your money back if you sell as a weanling/yearling and your mare is not stellar bred/performed.
However the other side of that coin could be that early in a mare's breeding career (if you are to remain invested in it) that you choose the best horse you can afford - to give you the best chance of establishing that mare as a successful producer as early as possible.  Get a really good one on the ground early on and the rest will be easier (and hopefully more profitable).
Would be great if you let us know what you decide and how it turns out dbtab.  Eagle Mountain was an interesting horse and your mare is quite a rare creature for sure! The breeding forum is my favorite and I just wish there was more activity and more photos of horses posted!  Thanks to those who do contribute - enjoy the opinions / observations / expertise.
All the best to you dbtab

Agree Col - why not try it?  Unfortunately unlikely to have a contender to have  a crack.  But when I have gone up there with one in the past - the place was crowded - hard to get a seat etc - but friendly club and lovely people in the room after.
So from this owner they got my tick ....

Greetings fitzy ... yes perhaps you are missing something ... such as the fact that sometimes that which costs the most does not turn out to be best!  Along the lines of all the glisters not being gold ...
LaZip can speak for himself but I thought at least part of his point was - that to sell something for big money at the yearling sales is success of itself to some.  Regardless whether that horse turns out to be a success on the racetrack.  To others the greater measure of success is producing (or buying) a successful racehorse.
And to some, success is to be named/famed as the person at the sales who spent the most or bought the highest price yearling.  To others - it would be to buy the most successful racehorses per dollar expended - bang for your buck if you like.
I'm sure there is room for each of these operators - and we can all choose who to support - or to emulate.
    Kind wishes
    Jealous, pathetic, moronic Jess.

From my observations over time, AS's conduct has at times lacked grace - as a winner and as a loser.  But we all have different characters and it's up to him how he conducts himself. This is only my opinion and it would be a boring world if we were all the same.
Looking at it from the point of view of Trackside/TAB - they will seek him out for an interview every time - and were probably rapt when JKB took the same bullish line when interviewed by Emily Bosson after his win on Dijon Bleu (comments like Kawi was the best horse in the race, he'd ride him like the best horse in the race adn he'd win).  People like AS not only polarise people and get them talking - their audacious, super confident interviews doubtless spark signficant betting activity (far more than the understated types who tell us their horse is very good, and is well but will need luck and anything can happen on the day etc etc).
And I think we'd be naive to think that Trackside is just an entertainment programme with no other purpose/motivation.

Hi Puha - you have to chase them up.  Well I did anyway.  Mine kept turning up as blank in the racebooks etc until I emailed and asked them.
Actually the whole thing turned into quite a protracted mission.  And I couldn't help wondering if the likes of Fortuna had quite the same hassle I experienced when they launched their variation on the Te Akau colors (which were a lot more complex in design than mine I might add.....)
However I have come to expect third rate treatment given I am nothing but a third-rate contributer - merely a small and lowly (bordering on insignificant?  nay - even nuisance?) participant with at most a wee handful racing at a time ....
At least they'll know your name when you contact them so that might be a help ...
Good luck.  You'll get there eventually, I'm sure ...

Agree.  Also transparency for punters, who are less likely to "play" if there are doubts about the amount of rain affecting the going and the likelihood of late scratchings.
The comments on this and other threads show a comprehensive lack of confidence that clubs give out information, good and bad, with timeliness and forthrightness.

Don't know but have often wondered how much it would cost to maintain webcams at the major tracks ... there are also people who run their own weather stations with "live" feeds to the net ... so these may even be an option ..
That combo might help foster an air of transparency for trainers / owners leading up to raceday? ....
