  1. Yeah see your point Leigh - but I can understand however that they are leery about hard tracks then getting a shower of rain, dangerous surface and races called off ... No excuse for what went on this time though ....
  2. - another departure and position to be filled. Seems short dated - announced today and he is to finish on 28 January. I have read the standard (patsy) statement by Guy Sargent. Is this a retirement, a resignation or a constructive dismissal? And who will appoint the successor? Will the process be tranparent with the best candidate appointed? Or just more jobs for the boys? Or maybe an offshore appointment with CV's inadequately examined but a blind belief if it's from overseas it MUST be better than homegrown ..... Please excuse the cynicism - I am a little disillusioned about our beloved industry/sport right now. Any answers to the above questions would be very welcome ...
  3. - he says he put 2mm too much on - ie. should have put 10mm not 12 after all that rain   :tcheek: As for the 72 hour thing - I'm not sure that a hard and fast (no pun intended) rule like that is the best policy - what about watering to maintain a dead 4-5 track - whcih on the day may improve to a good - but with an inclement shower may not produce a disaster?? I realise it's not that easy or that prescriptive but surely we should have done better than what was produced for the premier day on Saturday ...
  4. Do any of you buyers ask vendors what drugs their horses have been adminstered over recent times or what they may be under the influence of at sales time? Clearly there are situations when a yearling requires medication for an injury or illness and these would - and should - be given. Other drugs may be administered for other reasons. What transparency do buyers expect in this regard - and what transparency do vendors provide? What obligations do they have under the rules of the sales - or as part of a code of ethics? Do buyers ever blood test yearlings? I was told of a vendor who took his horses to a sale some years ago and declared to all and sundry that they were "drug-free" - nothing given to calm temperament, mask symptoms etc. I understand this was not a popular move with some other vendors. Any thoughts on the matter?

He and Sam S such a good combination - must say I like to see this lovely black horse lead the field back in with Sam aboard, big smile on her face. Good on them and connections.
  6. Would that not be a risk in the case of a few light showers/drizzle (not unheard of down that way!) arriving raceday? (... visions of a slick greasy surface and races called off after R1 ...... )
  7. inclined to agree - but time till tell. When he was on fire up in Europe with his 2 year olds - Haunui didn't start scribbling out the numbers on the slate and putting the fee up (like has happened here in NZ with shuttle horses previously). I wonder how successful Iffraaj will prove over southern hemisphere mares? There are some nay-sayers (of course most of these did not go to him early - and will not go to him now, on principle - despite his record-breaking effort in Europe!) Hopefully he'll prove every bit as good - or better as he's proved in the north! Good luck if you have one - I have looked thru' the pictures and videos on the NZB type - and that - along with the Iffraajs I have seen in the flesh - tell me he is really throwing a "type" - and to my eye - they look pretty good. We'll see ....
  8. is it possible to do a thread showing photos of hte new arrivals - the southern lot of NZTBA have got their act together and have some on their site - not sure about the other branches. Have you guys had a go at posting photos of yr foals here?
  9. Meaning ... interchangeable? All blonde? Enjoyable at the time - but expensive to dispense with? Soon out of fashion - need to be updated regularly? Better to look at than to listen to? Worthy of writing a top-10 hit about? Legless? (oops, no - sorry - that was Paul McCartney eh ...)
  10. - no knowledge but hopefully someone round the district or on the forum can tell you something ... Cheers J
  11. Hi Fermoy - yes that's the case last I heard also, though I didn't know whether that is still the case. Have seen a number of horses over the years who have "graduated" via Cavallo and they seemed to have had a good job done with them.
  12. Yes Fermoy - you are right there too - Chris got such a great reputation for his work with difficult youngsters and "re-breaks" that I think he got a bit sick of having all these rogues turn up and yearned for some nice, unspoilt young horses! All these outfits - trainers included - are only as good as their staff. The bigger they get - sometimes means less control and less quality assurance. I'm not sure who Chris has down there these days. I know at Roseview that the main work with your horse will be in the hands of Erin/Kelly/Bruce.
  13. "Be better if we work that system together" Don't see any "we" or "together" in the charming and self-congratulatory article which spawned this thread Irish, my love. Mine was a bemused :tcheek: observation - not a bitter diatribe - and so long as the world remembers that the horse was bred here - the publicity can only help us- god knows - our breeders need those buyers from offshore! Seasons Greetings to you too Irish, pet - may all your horses be fast ones and all the Ockers you encounter, honest ones. Jess
  14. Go you Aussies - fly that flag you champions! So remind me again about So You Think - oh that's right - bred by kiwis and raised in NZ, by a shuttle sire who never even stood in Aussie, out of a kiwi mare - THEN - some Aussie wrote a cheque at Karaka, put him on a plane and trained and raced him to success in the land of plenty. Yep - he's a champion. But an AUSSIE champion????
  15. - best word for the scene at Awapuni by the last race - staggering drunks, fights, blood, toilets awash with filth, vandalism @same (tho' I can see the humor in reversing the signs for the ladies' and gents' facilities - not so much perhaps if you are a 70 year old dowager gong to powder her nose who finds herself confronted with a urinal and bare male bums). etc etc Initially I was impressed when I made the trip down to Awapuni to see the huge crowd - predominantly young ones, having a good time; exciting stuff -racing looking to be in better heart? -or not ....? Couple of questions: 1. What was the on-course betting take from that huge crowd? (could be wrong - my impression was that there wasn't a lot of wagering interest from many of those attending) 2. What is the take from beverages/hospitality - how much of the take over the bar goes back into RACING? There was certainly a lot of alcohol drunk - how much was sold on course? (my observations were ppl drinking in the carpark before going onto the course proper and others asking for passouts at the gate, and going to cars to "top up" from their personal supplies). The crowds and behavior made it quite unpleasant to be on course at times (well - if you were a racing fan, over 20 and not drunk, anyway) - but that's all good I guess if racing was the winner and it puts lots of much-needed money in the kitty for the industry, and attracts new fans. Would be really interested to know what were the tangible benefits to accrue from such a raceday.
  16. Now before some of you jump down my throat .... (not that this will stop you ) YES! - it's great to have big owners in the industry who race heaps of horses - and - YES! - an owner can call his/her horse anything they like (so long as it gets past NZTR officials) but I can't help the yawn response when I see another horse rolled out with the same prefix ... (the latest tribe being the CD raiders Lincoln-everything from the Latta barn). What is it about? Branding? Ego? Peeing on the local lamp post to mark out ones territory? It is generally seems unrelated to breeding (compare with the likes of the "Belle" breeding line - which has relevance to many followers ..) - more a matter of ownership. It reminds me of that other code - where naming is seemingly the refuge of the unimaginative, with every 2nd runner being a Cawborne, Homebush or Winsome - sonething-or-other.
  17. - he looked to be a fiery type when I saw him (racing and since) - what are the progeny like generally, temperament-wise - I have only had anything to do with one Falkirk and that one has a lovely nature and is fairly quiet.
  18. Any predictions? I'm told there's been a bit of rain down that way.
  19. Did anyone catch Kevin's talk about the apprentice situation last weekend on radio trackside? Was interested to hear what he had to say, although I didn't catch all of it so maybe someone else has a more complete version of what he said? He seemed to be expressing a fair swag of disillusionment with the apprentice system in current times - not thinking thngs worked as well with these young riders these days compared with earlier years. With the success he has had over the years with apprentices - many of whom have gone on to become very successful senior riders - his thoughts must be worth consideration??
  20. Don't know who is doing the job in Wairarapa but agree with Scott - if you are prepared to travel her an hour and a half or so, Erin and Kelly will do a fine job for you -if they can fit her in (but they may not thank Scott and I for recommending them to owners of a "filly with attitude!!"
  21. smart way to try to enlist some free assistance Pongo .... NOT.
  22. ... intriguing that some of these fancy horses choose to ply their trade at Waipuk ....

Good effort and generous gesture. While we're on Pike River - sincere condolences to all who have been affected by this tragedy. I wonder how much the media organisations have donated - I know they have kept us informed - but at times completely overstepped the mark (as usual), intruding on the victims and taking advantage of people's vulnerability. Most of all they have made a fortune out of the whole event - so for all their claimed/portrayed empathy - what have they given back to the community they have unashamedly exploited?
