Hi Jess, I'd give my wife Kirsty Lawrence some thought. Small stable based at home and paddock trained. Plenty of one on one with the horses. Best horse to date is a stayer in Intransigent. Reasonable rates $42 to $45 a day. Kirsty's no is 027 268 8890 if needed. Funny you should msg me Steve - Kirsty was on my radar and I have followed your great little stayer for several years now & liked how (just my impression as I don't know K personally) that she always put the horse first and loved him win or lose! I have also wondered if an equestrian background like K's could also be useful rather than a pure racing person.
Does K ride all her own work or do you have a trackwork rider as well? This horse can be stubborn and willful - no dramas shoe/truck/box etc but I know from groundwork I've done that she is likely to try your patience and a really competent and even-tempered rider will be essential.
While I would leave the decisions to whoever ends up training the horse, I tend to think that a different approach is needed (mixed up with some bach/hill/hacking - even dressage??!!) and that a large stable with a one-size-fits-all approach may not be successful - no matter the skill of the trainer. I think this horse might benefit from more variety and needs to learn the game can be fun.
Thanks again for responding. It's a big decision. The horse has been in a biggish stable with a kind, competent, essentially conventional trainer with whom I maintain a good relationship and we've discussed a lot of this together. There are no difficulties in that regard and wherever the horse (currently spelling) goes I intend to put the 2 trainers in touch so that line of communication is strong and hopefully benefits the horse in the end. .

Hi Jess as an afterthought, he took on Seconds Out and has trained it to win over sprints, middle distance and over ground , on a good 3 and as heavy as an 11. He is a very under rated horseman staying under the radar as he is quite shy and doesn't crave the limelight. His real passion though is to turn a difficult horse around. I know I have worked for him and seen first hand what he can do. Give him a call and he will love talking to you as he is like you never wants to give up on a horse. Cheers.

Thanks mate. I have also toyed with the idea of sending her to someone who uses natural horsemanship type principles. This horse has been trained by someone who is humane but essentially orthodox and though the trainer would take the horse back (is spelling currently) we have agreed that it's probably time to try a different approach. I know from doing the ground work with the horse that there is a stubborn, willful streak there. And it may be that eventually we accept the racing game is not for this horse. But the ability shown early - plus the fact sometimes this tough streak can actually be an advantage if you can "harness it" - makes me want to give the horse another chance. And while breeding/type is not everything - both these factors are also relatively favorable in this case.

Hi Jess. If it was me I would send this horse to Iain Marks. Fantastic with difficult horses. Broke in for Mike Pittman and Kevin Hughes(South Island). Re-broke in the horse "Seconds Out" ( was dismissed from a large stable in Taranaki as it was dangerous) to win six races last season. Has built an awesome setup (with safety in mind) in Te Aroha and Is now breaking in there. Believes in building trust first and all his horses turn out calm and happy. Has broken in one for Peter Locke with another one getting broken in for him shortly. Very good rates and travels back and forth to Taranaki as he works horses for other trainers from there. His contact no is 027 2708863 You won't get anyone more competent with difficult horses and real good to deal with.

Thanks LL. It is really hard to know what is going to work with these quirky horses. And while they may need a firm hand I won't tolerate anyone who will be cruel or lose their temper with them. Don't know Iain at all. Is he based at the course or on his own property. Who rides work for him? - I think the track-rider will have a lot to do with the success of teh exercise (or otherwise) also ...
