  1. The returns to the owner are a big problem, I have been in this game most of my life, (now have a gold card) and have seen the costs go up and the returns go down, The stakes are a joke, the trainers bills are huge, even a nice horse can not pay its way, I had one who won five races and made over 30000, Cost me over 60000 to get that so paying a service fee for the mare I owned was more expense. She was well bred but I just threw my hands in the air and gave up and with all the crap with drugs and cheating going on, Why would anyone bother. The end is in sight, sad to say as we will have less horses on the track and as a lot of owners have the same gold card as me and they are not being replaced by younger people.
  2. Look at the stakes, this is going downhill, transport cost etc. Why bother, 8500 races and the way this is going, soon to be going lower, this sport is going downhill and fast
  3. This sale looks like buying a lifeboat on the Titanic, the future does not look good
  4. Lets flip the coin, wealthy owners go and get the best stock because they can afford it, maybe Purdon and his owners see a better return for the outlay at the gallops, On the flipside, is that why Rogerson got into harness, because some of his owners pockets were not deep enough so he gave them something to race in their budget.
  5. Would not somewhere away from an Auckland traffic jam be easier for all concerned, Is AP anywhere near a train Station?
  6. Selling the place might not be the best move forward, after everything is payed up, could you trust the currant bunch of muppetts with what is left.
  7. The winners time for the main race at Nelson, is this not telling us something. We breed to USA horses who run miles and look at this. We need more of this to suit the horses we are putting on the track. Also the mares in the field with the last horse going under 1.55 are now worth breeding from for a sellers point of view. The clubs should look at this, they payout maybe $90,000 over nine races to 12 horse fields, pay the same total over smaller fields , say 12 races and miles. As an owner, I would love it, smaller win purse but less traffic in having a go at it, this is how Menangle works among others.. And where are all our racing stock going, just call them skippy. The younger thinkers need to change our sport, they no longer want a tactical 2600metre gut buster and nor does the owner who gets two starts a month from those to pay the bills. Milers get more starts, Look at the aussie horses, the amount of starts and stakes won, time for the old boys network to have a rethink and start by watching Nelson today, only thing wrong their is it is such a great meeting that smaller field might have been a bonus from a punters view. It was a great idea, WELL DONE NELSON
  8. What we see is how versatile a horse can be, some stand, some walk, some jog and if your M Purdon in the cup, you can be nearly going racing speed. All this in a small area on the track but it will be RIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT
  9. Good racing, good crowd and good stakes for the owners and the punters get a run for their money with a few of the good payouts probably going to those who like numbers or easy bets and good on them. This is what this sport is all about, without the people we are in deep shit and well done to all the horse people who made the trip, be a few stories being told in the pubs of Westport tonight
  10. The legal Aid gravy train is on full steam ahead, We need to just get rid this shit, Lawyers front up for a looser and smile all the way to the bank. How can one defend this person.
  11. Will be interesting to read the stipes report on the scratchings of the Purdon horses and the RIU take on this
  12. The RIU has its place but they need to be better at the job they do.
  13. Did you get to see a dog having a shit on the track, they rarely miss on that
  14. Forbury was an owners problem, I had a horse who had a bit of speed but could not win in canterbury so off we go south, run second. The trainer then said that we should race her down their where she fits. Then we get the monthly account and we made bugger all for our second after expenses. Dunedin has its place and I like it there but the horse needs to live there
  15. This is really a win loose conversation on field sizes, smaller fields give a better chance of a winning punt with maybe a smaller divvy but if you spend four dollars and get seven back, you move on to the next with another four or more, small punters might not save us but the winnings are like those on a poker machine, they come back for more and have a fun night out with their mates. This is an entertainment industry as well as a job provider and as we speak, it is more of an export industry, get the horse running and prop up Aussie fields by selling it, you cannot even pay the bills racing here. Most racing stock here have a price on their head, we the owners are just waiting for the offer and I am a realist on the value of my stock, a willing seller, the returns to the man who actually pays all the bills are not good enough, but those in the trough who cannot see past there snout do not care, Ask Winston how many small owners he knows in all codes and does he care, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
  16. Fair comment, but I would rather be stuck four back on the fence in an eight horse field than a full field. The driver then is usually thinking next week at the 600. We have to try something to increase turnover and the younger ones just might be the future. With no tote staff, we need cell phone punters and they are great with those, think about it, drink, punt, race, repeat process twelve times over three hours.
  17. Four starts a month, usually does not happen, we now have smaller stakes so it is harder to get close to the trainers fees. If we are going to race for lesser stakes, we should get smaller fields over short distances. We have bred our horses to American speed so why not have shorter races to suit, then we can have a twelve race night at 20 min apart and go back next week, wall to wall action to suit the younger ones. Look at Aussie, they do this and a lot of horses are racing for smaller stakes and have had a lot of starts, but they have a bit of coin along the way in the bank. We are stuck in a time warp and are up to our waist in quicksand and sinking, time to reinvent the wheel so to speak
  18. Breeding, owning and then racing horses is a sport I was born into and I still have a mare and two foals, but is there a future for the likes of me, I sadly do not think so, my mare is empty and the costs and low returns via stakes really makes me think, why bother. Now we are reducing stakes yet again, But no trainers are reducing fees, those at the top still have their nose in the bucket at the same pay levels so the long suffering owner is shafted again. Among all the owners in this country, the backbone of this sport, we must have some who want to make change, I do for a start, but where do we start the ball rolling, John Street is at least one who has made a stand and good on him Look at what those in flash suits and shiney shoes have done for this sport, raped it for their own gain and look at Auckland developments, tears are coming but still behind closed doors, just one pile of shit to the next going on here. Change is needed and last week was a good time to start
  19. An article said that the NRL players are in for an 87% pay cut, in the Warriors case, that would be based on performance as they only look of any use for 13% of a game
  20. Takes a head wind and a tail wind to do a lap
  21. Well put and you hit the nail on the head, but, what are the changes needed. Owners of lesser horses are going down faster than Mums pants on fathers day
  22. Why not try running mile races with smaller fields and $5000 stake, the horses race weekly then and we are short of horses running now. 2600 gut busters at Addington takes two weeks before you return and you need to run a place twice just to break even with the bills in a month, Do the people in charge really know what is going on, I think not, this is a costly sport for the owner and breeder. I have two very well bred foals not even broken in yet, one by Hes Watching and they might as well be hacks, another owner breeder with very little hope for the future, by the way, both foals are stunners.
  23. That is a very true statement
  24. The legals are loving this, $$$$$, The riu are claiming expenses to buy the eggs to smash on their face, the only problem is that those accused have now been bled dry and cannot afford a law suit for costs
