  1. get a life Mr Ed, you obviously been to the charm school of D. Trump. If you keep repeating a falsehood someone some where may start to believe you. ie dogs propping up harness racing. let see how good greyhounds go without the facilities provided by trotting at million of dollars at say manawatu,Cambridge ,Ascot Park and Christchurch.!!The Greyhounds were regarded as "polyfilla"by the TAB (to fill in the gaps between real races. UNfortunately it is cheaper all round to race and train and transport greyhoundsand inevitably the polyfilla through squeezing the tube hard have through sheer volume got their turnover up .But remember harness Racing is here to stay and greyhounds still have a rocky future..
  2. No Canon the race was officially abandoned as they had travelled too far. A dog had fallen in first lap and was still standing on the track so lure driver forced to stop race. There was another $30000 race run after the abandoned one . I presume they may run it next week if participants happy. they had money to burn 2 X $30000 1 20000 and why not have a $50000 as well as plenty others .
  3. Easy to predict future with horsepower that Beach Flybye possess(downbythe seaside) Of course also predictable Coles get major share with 7 wins from 11 completed and placings everywhere. My 100 people was poss generous and most enthusiastic owners. but watching tote figures pitiful for a group night (even allowing for unknown FO totals )Sad that big race abandoned especially for the 2 dogs way in front !! Didnt handlers used to dress up a bit for a group 1 night of racing ? Still suppose it is whangas and we more relaxed here. !
  4. Tasman Man the facts of your story are misleading at best. the imports be they dogs/horses/camel racing/dogs have no relevance to nz greyhounds getting or deserving more handouts. It is simply as You know a fav. word of the TAB """ extra product""" and 1 which entain and nz racing do not want to encourage. This is a group night true in Whanganui. BUT ordinary races outside the group races eg. all averaging around $7000. If the turnover and sponsorship and any on course profits from say crowd of 100 come anywhere near break even it would be in the fiction section of the library. After watching Beach FlyBye fly to victory in race 2 (Addington) I will go out to Hatrick and get some facts ...PS. The decline in Harness Racing has been helped by lack of any vision for the future eg wanting to close whole areas of our great sport to save money and decline of any push outside computers and trackside channels !
  5. To make matters worse in daylight checked figures stakes actually around 188000.00 for the night !
  6. Its been said before BUT.... greyhounds must have a secret hotline to the "money gods" for example this weeks meeting Hatrick Wanganui.. total stakes approx $150000 !!! To say the Greyhound industry pays for this level is simply wrong. It has to be a subsidised amount from horse racing... (ps not a lot of sponsorship )Another fact is Coles line up approx 60 dogs so should have great pay day !! (Maybe a little envious)can anyone in harness racing explain how Greyhounds appear to get a bigger slice of the pie.
  7. sorry Mick/ actually Greg O^Connor interviewing
  8. it appeared certain that the Auckland Trotting Clubs President is reaching to new lows on latest interview concerning the Trotting Hall of Fame. He was absolutely glowing with a "patsy question" from Mick as to whereabouts of our national heritage . It apparently is sitting in some containers or shed at back of Cambridge racecourse. and according to Mckinnon Cambridge have no intention of building a display area.A situation of extreme euphoria for Auckland. I find (regardless of personality clashes with Gilbert Miles} the reaction of a Club President simply disgusting . and insulting to the memory of contributors such as Noel Taylor and 100s of others . Sure Auckland need every cent it can get and must sell everything it can to lower the $100000 weekly itnterest bill but it is a bad look the way the President is acting.
  9. As time moves on breeding pictures change. My comments on Capt Treacherous were based on increasing foal numbers as his fantastic per centage of quality winners to live foals makes him the most sought after sire in NZ. Problem is his stud fee being over 20000 plus gst (frozen semen only)means his numbers are small . So with around 200 foals he is competing with stallions with over 1000 foals of racing age.I do wonder if total money earnt should be only criteria for success of a sire. Maybe we need to look at Per centages as well.It is true though that the late sire Some beach somewhere has been a boon to the breeding industry with his sons being highly sought after. in Nz examples are Capt treacherous and his son Capt Crunch and downby the seaside
  10. Mike the article stated Auckland was minus 1 date and other clubs which had 2 days (which help trainers and fields) now 1 day Only exception being Hawera. There was however 1 extra day for Addington (surprise !!) Like a lot of info these days anything from HRNZ eg Entain deal etc seems to be marked "secret Squirrel"and mentioned then vanishes. Is someone with a job in HRNZ monitoring the Internet sifting through information and removing anything that may prove contentious.(or am I paranoid ?)
  11. I also wonder with all the changes coming soon why HRNZ agree to 7 less dates. for next season [or is the money pit staying in Christchurch ? just a bad dream I hope)
  12. the up front payment is $150 million if Minister was correct
  13. The full facts of the Minister of Racing statements yesterday seem to have been missed.Sure a good increase in stakes and a good recognition of looking after owners/breeders. (to correct decline in both)However, Mcanulty mentioned several other salient points. Which may lead to even fewer TAB outlets.... He stated that he wanted to remove 500 poker machines from TABS ... thought Greyhound racing is most likely to close down (only problem he saw was the existing dogs)and he was to spend a lot of money on gambling harm reduction.all very well but wanted to introduce a lot more options for punting. (seems a bit confused over direction for the future.)Entain has to guarantee TAB employees jobs for the future but added for only 2 years ! (could lead to The best brains moving out before 2 years !! (could be disruptive)He also wanted to stop newzealanders betting with overseas agencies (assume Entain the exception) Still it all sounds good for harness Racing but if greyhounds finish many tracks will lose income eg. Manawatu/ cambridge/ ascot park/addington etc.) My recollection of the speech maynot be 100% as was interrupted by grehound racing!! PLease correct me if off the mark.
  14. Presume he will want to sell thegreyhounds . so they should still be available for fields in the area. ? (especially those with other part owners ? )
  15. All I can say is comments by leading trainer after winning such a prestigious race for the 7th time were disrespectful to the Greyhound racing industry and reflects badly on the racing industry overall .
  16. Finally it is clear that Captain Treacherous is to take over the top spot from Bettors Delight this season or next. He has the advantage of being a great cross with bettors mares and Christian Cullens.Other stallions to watch Captain Crunch,Always be Mickey,Down by the seaside, 2 emerging local "products" that are also looking good (early days) are Vincent and now Ultimate Machete. I hope more breeding as 2 to 3000 foals per year is dangerously low . (bigger incentives needed)
  17. meant to add Taranaki as a great source of support as well (sorry). In the 1960s Cardigan Bay broke the NZ mile record on the track (1.56) which is a good 2 year old time now !!! Anyone who thinks that the committee and staff did not fight to save Hutt Park are very much mistaken. some did offer advice that I worried too much and HRNZ and the Racing Industry would never let Hutt park "die" . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  18. Cant let Kenepuru's comments go uncorrected.re demise of Hutt Park.Michael House was a supporter in the 90s before closure but not at the level he is today. However , number of runners was never a problem as we tried to ensure full fields and had great response from locals ,northern trainers and south Island trainers who enjoyed subsidised travel across the Strait.Names that were prominent were John Lischner,Robt Dunn, Derek Jones,Graeme Pearson and the Butts ,Roydon Lodge(of course) from the south and Bernie Hackett ,Lou Driver, The Purdons and many more from the north and support from Cambridge/Hawkes Bay/Palmerston North and the local trainers.A problem was ensuring everyone got a start .Some travellers also wanted good draws !!!.Main problem for the closure was overheads. eg. Hutt City council wanted to increase ground rent from approx $5000 pa to over $100000 pa other fixed costs were growing every year so to amortise them to14 Wellington HRC dates,2 Otakidates and 1 Wairarapa the costs outstripped our ability to cut raceday costs and ,increase sponsorship to carry on .To expect M. House to save us is a farcical response .(no doubt He would have liked Hutt Park to continue and would have been a big supporter .) I personally was devastated by its closure and may have still been Secretary/Manager today if it had continued !( albeit would have become a grumpy old man by now !)
  19. Nelli,I usually agree with you BUT, owners and their partners !! want to make a profit on harness racing and I believe the days of selling it as a hobby are long gone. The amount left in bank accounts after rent/mortgages food/power/transport /rates/insurances etc etc. is lucky to be in positive territory(if at all) each month.lets say we accept only approx. 20 % of harness horse owners make a profit each season it is in dire need of a rethink. Like you the days of 2 division races and say 6ballots and 20 eliminations were a nightmare . Today is a different world so the system has to adjust. From breeding/training/owning/betting it must be treated as a business to succeed because it is unsustainable or justified if it is not. Do agree with others many things over the years have improved but the economics of racing a horse have not.(and I am to hear the song "76 trombones"played at next birthday >lol)
  20. Auckland Sales completed and excellent standard of presentation . thought some overpriced but generally very pleasing and means many investors still prepared to see a good future for NZ harness racing. After at least 10 years at the top of the list and averages Bettors Delight in his advancing years has strong rivals although still popular. The new "kids" eg. CAPTAINTREACHEROUS,CAPTAIN CRUNCH,DOWNBYTHESEASIDE,ALWAYSBMIKI,(1 of them) could become the new dominant sire in NZ especially now with so many well bred mares containing the bettors delight/christian cullen cross' It always happens, eventually, the female line of the superstar aids his rivals and that has finally shown this year. PS. watched Tony Herlihy after obviously not bidding on one lot get congratulated as successful by the auctioneer.... and when girl with the clipboard approached Tony mouthed "it wasn't me" ! (with a smile of course )
  21. toChevy86 unnecessary comment.
  22. NZb standard bred sales ,Auckland just finished and it is pleasing to report that Eljay and I were justified in expectations of a good result for Always B Miki. With an average sales price of just over $ 50000.00 (5 times stud fee) it must be a good sign for vendors in Christchurch where there are many more lots (30) so a 50000 level may be hard to maintain but they all look like early performers.so again should be popular.
  23. Thanks Eljay .. a different bank I presume (maybe bank of China !!!)
  24. thanks ElJay it would have taken me years to find that (TAB so helpful ....not !!) You clever Cafers may also know why I can find at a moments notice every Sire represented in thoroughbred races but "not available" in any standarbred race in NZ. ? is this another example of our lowly status or ...what ?
  25. At least Ray Greens team won the $150000 Aust.Ballarat Cup which would bring a smile to his face. The new training track must be working albeit a long way to travel to find a race and a sad reflection on the north Island state of harness racing
