  1. Q. What do you call an Australian with a celebratory champagne bottle in his hand? A. A waiter. Q. Of everyone in the Aussie team, who spends the most time at the crease? A.The ironing lady who does their whites Q. What
  2. "TO BE honest, I won all my money and didn't know the name of one bloody horse in the East," said Paul Makin, the Kensington Public school graduate and Doncaster pub paper seller, on being a successful punter. Makin is, no doubt, the most successful graduate of that house of learning and sceptics may scoff it has produced only the odd media hack. But studying the field closely you'll find the odd weight-for-age legal performer plus politicians, Cabinet members both federal and state. In Hong Kong and Japan, Makin accumulated a pile that Crisp, which had no trouble with giant obstacles at Aintree, couldn't jump. So much so he can indulge Starcraft, his AJC Derby winner which is now at stud. "I'm not really a breeder but I wanted to give Starcraft a bit of a start, he's one of my boys, so I bought a lot of mares last year and they are all in foal to him and I'll offer them back to the people," he said on radio station 2SM last Saturday, regarding the Magic Millions sale this week. "I like racing rather than breeding. We've done our best with the mares, I think they are quite stunning." How long will he continue in this manner with Starcraft? "I'll buy more mares and do it again next year," he said. "Then I won't help him anymore. I've got some of his weanlings up in the northern hemisphere. I'm going to send five of them to the best five trainers up there and I'm going to do exactly the same down here." And his secret to success on the punt? "Don't count your winnings by the day," he replied. "The reality is that it doesn't really matter what you do by the day, it matters what you take home at the end of the year. You've got to think long-term and the only way is value. The price must be right. You just keep taking value. You won't back all the winners but you'll end up with money. Winning is a long-term project. If you just want to go and enjoy yourself and knock off a hundred or two, that's all very good, but if you want to win you've got to have a professional approach." SMH June 4 2007 Again, congratulations Paul on the win of the filly. Two questions if I may. You state on this thread that you, as the owner make all the decisions. I know that you were keen to scratch the filly after she drew the inside barrier. Was it Leith's phone call to you last Wednesday where he stated that he was sure he could get her off the fence (which he did magnificently) that convinced you to run? And secondly, do you still have an interest in Starcraft? With Star Witness and now this filly, his future looks bright. Cheers
  3. Paul.... She is still maturing and who knows what distance she might get to. She may well be an Oaks filly. I posted on an Australian website yesterday: "We Can Say It Now will win this in a canter if she has any luck at all. This is a CLASS ACT who will be seen in Australia in the Autumn in Group 1 races. The Baker stable rate this filly very highly." A reader came back with the following: "What I've heard about We Can Say It Now is that, if she wins, this will be her last start in NZ. She'll do the rest of her racing in Australia." Can you confirm if this will in fact be the case please.....as quite frankly we (the NZ racing community) don't want to loose her.
  4. Certainly not green eyed zzz. Just giving the man a wrap...which he was seeking. All credit to the Bakers....I missed Paul's acknowledgment of their terrific training feat to win another Group 1....and also train the third place getter as well. I'm sure it was an oversight on his part.
  5. Paul Makin Well, I was expecting you Kiwis to rush to the Racecafe and post your appreciation. Is it too late? Has everyone gone to bed? Paul Makin - Wow what a guy The messiah. Oh great one we bow at your feet. Oh no....was he meaning the filly?
  6. She might have turned over a new leaf again but this time gone all the way and changed her choice of drugs as well.
  7. "Rambunctious, rumbustious, delinquent dogs become angelic when sitting." Sit down Big Dog....you're starting to slobber!!
  8. Bull****. The gap was there and the other horse closed it. It was a shocking decision.
  9. The Kiwis might pick up the Ballarat Cup on Sunday with The Hombre and M Walker.
  10. Melbourne Cup winning jockey Gerald Mosse will be the headline act at for the Kailis International Jockey Series at Ascot on Saturday week. Mosse, 43, became the first French rider to claim Australia
  11. Ol la la mon cherie... Za money zat could ave gone to help zee Informant iz being allocated to zee new Frenchman in charge of zee entegreedy unit. 12. Wait till you see the "painted lady"....now that was a sight for to behold!!!
  13. Two cannibals are eating a clown. One cannibal turns to the other and asks, "This taste funny to you?" No prizes for guessing who the clown is...
  14. Can one of those glory boys who love seeing themselves on TV take a minute to explain why there cannot be a Jockeys Challenge at every meeting in NZ. And why is there no fixed price place odds available? It's no bloody wonder most serious punters do their punting overseas. For farks sake lift your game.
