So when the ABs lose, sack the coach???? It's not a perfect world. Things happen. Horses only went 300 mtrs at most. Let's sort the problem and move on.

    Nobody died.

This is a Group 1 race and supposedly our shop window to the world. Simply not good enough and unprofessional. it just reinforces what many around the world think of racing in this country.

Why was Rangiora abandoned.  I have spent 15 minutes on various sites and found squilch.

Probably weather related. It's been hosing down in CHC and cannot imagine it's any better out at Rangiora.

Sorry Team but the death of PT is not sad.Time for some perspective. He has lived a full life of 88 years and had immeasurable success in his chosen harness racing field and hopefully enjoyed a happy and fulfilling retirement with his family and friends.

What is SAD is the loss of 2 volunteer firefighters in their prime with the resultant loss to their wives and children before they could enjoy a long and rewarding family life.

Bask in the memories of what PT turned on for us, but remember we are all mortal. JMO.

    Really. Why bother posting.

Wouldn’t hold my breath on that Nelli. As soon as they started playing around with the calendar, moving the Auckland Cup from New Years Eve it was the start of the decline. That Carnival ( along with the ARC Auck Cup on New Years Day ) was a historical permanent fixture for many, particularly visitors from the South Island, who travelled up in huge numbers as part of their Xmas break. They lost them and didn’t get them back. The Rowe Cup Carnival was another event with a huge tradition and history…the place was always dressed up, pipe bands and entertainment etc……sadly all seemingly forgotten now.

These are my thoughts exactly when I referred earlier in this thread to AKL today being a shadow of days gone by..

Hi kdt. I don't have the stewards vision but a frame by frame look at the vision I have, it looks to me that the horse didn't slip but lost it's balance and almost foot tripped itself after bouncing off Jason's horse. In my view probably rider error. Can't see any sign of it slipping, hind shoe missing or not, though how that happened remains a mystery.

    Cheers

Made call earlier to go ahead weather can change or arrive later or not but is it better to start something you may not finish or not start at all. Easy sitting here on Racecafe

Not at all re sitting on Racecafe. My concern is for jockey welfare

You keep going on about that but that's exactly what the latest advice from NZTR and NZSTI is.

NZTR Track Preparation Policy Notes - “NZTR recognises the preparation of the racing surface is not always capable of precise control, particularly having regard to weather conditions leading up to and on the race day itself, taking into account the particular characteristics of the track e.g. soil type, soil moisture, grass cover and quality of the irrigation system.

“On soil tracks, one way to manage the problem is to not target Good 3 or Dead 4 tracks at times when rainfall is difficult to predict accurately.” (NZSTI)

Clubs' hands aren't tied. There's no excuse for a slippery track other than exceptional weather conditions.

Hi Leggy. Just need your considered opinion. There are a number of people on Facebook in particular (it was a Love Racing post) saying that the track was not the issue at Reefton but rather  the horse that won the race slipped because it was running with a hind shoe missing. The horse was fractious and they couldn't get it back on. I've been shot down because I said it was track safety as per the Stewards Report.  Thoughts?

A driver was suspended at Westport on the First Day,  was allowed to drive at 3 more meetings before suspension started, allowable by the rules of HRNZ. at those meetings they had 16 drives and 4 wins.

Is this really a penalty? The driver will be laughing all the way to the bank and sitting out the suspension in style.

Does this actually help this person learn there lesson, I must point out,  they where suspended again at the next meeting for the same infringement.

I remember the days when a suspension started that day or night, end of story.

Just come out and say it. You are referring to Ben Hope. What he is doing is allowed within the rules. Nothing special here particularly this time of the year with so many meetings within a short timeframe.

I hope horses and people are not to badly hurt and hope its not a trainer coming back from Wingatui.

I fear you may be correct. News reports say two people with moderate injuries. There are 7 horses on the truck. At this stage no reports as to the extent of injuries to them.

I heard Tim Mills on the radio say basically you can apply for a refund but please don't because we can't afford to pay you.  Is he for real??!!  Who let him out to say that sort of nonsense in public?

Heard the same thing myself. A big fat go and get stuffed from me. This club treat the public with contempt and it will now bite them in the bum. Cry your crocodile tears somewhere else Tim Mills. I thought you might have at least offered your resignation by now.

Sadly Riccarton can not be fixed unless they spend millions, and I mean millions!

As I have explained many times on this site, when they rebuilt and re-contoured the track [about 25/28 years ago] they used a roading contractor who constructed the base as if it was a road.

The consequence is that when rain or irrigation is applied, the water has no where to go and hence just sits there. Yesterday for example.

The turf is extremely shallow rooted and flies to bits in no time, which we all see time after time. It is shallow rooted because the roots can't penetrate the road base.

Finally the track itself dries out very quickly and bakes hard in no time at all [with a bit of hot weather] because the track can't hold any moisture deep down, again because of the road base.

Which would suggest the whole damn thing needs to be ripped up and start again. But as you say where are the $$ going to come from for that. It doesn't seem to matter if it's mid summer or mid winter at Riccarton the clods be they wet or dry fly up. I think the rebuild was around 1997/98. I had not long come to live in Christchurch and went to a CJC meeting out at Rangiora. Rangiora itself is another whole sordid story.
