Baltimore Jill has not placed in a f&m race (f&m) bonus nor won a race this season (NZ stallion bonus).

The scheme is 10% on stakes ( not just wins)  from all races in NZ.

Auckland Reactor is on the list of NZ bred Stallions.

As for the breeding entity of Baltimore Jill does have a change to it. She was bred with partners but the first person named of that is still the owner of the dam who is still breeding.  So do you think it is fair that a part of the previous entity may now no longer be breeding but the principle person misses out ? (Even on a owner/ breeder percentage) . That person is still breeding.  This is more a disincentive to breed and have less people involved. The complete opposite of what we want to achieve. More owners breeding.

We don't  know the particular circumstances of the breeder but going by the Stallions used to the Dam,  it has been to mainly the lower ranked  Stallions. BIS would not likely have been used as mare missed and no return the previous 2 years.

Baltimore Jill is raced by one  ( with others) of the breeders entities Breeders ( not the principle ).

It still comes down to having enough owners. The costs are the same to feed and train a good or poor horse but the latter will earn less. If other owner/breeders are like us, we focus our resources on the ones who can pay their way (and for the education of our young ones) and find new homes for those who are a big drain on our resources. Will low grade races change  the numbers of horses we can afford to race? If it means funds shifted away from the higher grade races and our good horses will earn less, then the proposal may actually have a negative effect on how many horses we can afford to own.

Has any breeding bonuses been attached to any horses you have bred?

I was looking through NZ bred horses placed yesterday and I saw Baltimore Jill  (Auckland Reactor )have none  but has been placed several times since August .  Paige (One Over The Moon) has $2500+ in  NZ bred bonuses and $2000 in fillies and mare bonuses.  Something is not right with Baltimore Jill's  info or eligibility?

Did everyone else watch the start of the highest rating race then go make a cup of coffee and come back and the race still had 1000m to go….

The field may as well stayed at home and tge time keeper needed an hour glass until the 400m…..

That's whats going to happen when they scrap the qualifying time for qualifying a horse. A lot of slow horses might get a chance to race and then a lot more sit sprint races you will see.

  4. Word has it that the time standard for qualifying will be scrapped and it will be based upon the horses ability to stay gaited. This would mean the Tuesday low rated stakes meetings would go ahead. ( But gather will have the same ratings hike as other more staked meetings) . This will allow every horse bred an opportunity to collect stake money, which may indeed help increase breeding numbers and confidence. Wish them luck with this.

You make a lot of valid points Nelli but I’m not sure for me that $500 subsidy would encourage me to breed a mare.  If I collect say $3k over a few years that would definitely incentivise me to get involved.    Maybe HRNZ should look at making all trotting races eligible, I get that they have less F&M racers than the pacers.

Have you seen the article  11th March written by the NZSBA.

It outlined a proposal for a $2000 subsidy for breeding a mare ( up to 3 mares ) worth $2000 each but the proposal was considered too late to implement and costs..

I don't  have the ability to copy and paste it on here for a full read.

Hopefully someone here has recieved it by email and can do so.

It also outlined the NZ bred bonus which it was not a great supporter of, but I think it is a good scheme. The fillies and mares bonus scheme needs a tweak in my view. The 2yo bonus is good.

Seeing the article has made me determine that they are going to excelerate the small breeders demise.

We are down to about 50 or 60 stallions , genetically breeding into an ever decreasing circle compared to the 89's and 90's when there was over 100.

  6. Breaking in cost have risen also, wouldn't get much change out of $3k .

In the event of  more breeding there has to be money for this as well. We don't  get stats from HQ on wastage  Maybe a subsidy to the next horse they breed goes to the breeder generated from a previous horse that has qualified,

Remember seeing a report years ago showing and indicating that the majority of horses qualify at the age of 4. Is this still the case or are these horse not persevered with anymore ?

  7. Wonder how much of the BIS money was not used. As someone that was eligible this season but because HRNZ changed the conditions that's one more mare not served.  How many others  ?

I had plans for going to Bling It On or For A Reason for that mare.

Have started the weaning process with my Piping Hot General x Hera Thunder (Spirit Of Zeus) filly. Photo Below.20240225_164052.thumb.jpg.ba2cb16472a336ef1abd42b26664edb3.jpg

Give the Punters a product they want to bet on.

Six horse fields on a leaders bias track is not an attractive betting preposition to most, especially when money is tight in a lot of households.

Most smaller punters  like a bet on bigger fields where there is a chance of making 10x your wager or better and there is no chance of that happening if a $1.40 favourite is in the first three.

Bring back the six pack, or introduce some bet types where there is a decent amount of money up for grabs, then people might take a chance and bet more.

Like  the idea of the Six Pack.

As most of you know from my participation on the Thoroughbred thread, I am a galloping person.
Joan wants to buy into a trotter. She is looking at a Tactical Landing filly from the Auckland Sale - Lot 51 to be precise.

    Questions:

    1) How good is Tactical Landing as a sire?

    2) How good is the family that the filly is from?

It’s damn hard to actually read the pedigree page given all the information about times and the back type that doesn’t mean a lot to me.

Dave Quinn has a yearling filly he's just broken in from a winning mare and progeny. Good Family.

A continuation of the slow death of Harness in NZ. If Entain lose interest in the code then its demise will be brought forward IMO.

As for NZB, how long will they be prepared to offer a full service sale. My guess is that they will cut Christchurch to 1 day from here on in with the remaining vendors being offered Gavel House

    Lets see shall we.

I wouldn't buy anything on gavelhouse unseen.  Saw a weanling or two arrive after that sale at a trainers place, looked good but small so not developed forwarded by the stud selling it unlike the yearlings.

I've said it umpen times on social media, the uhf channel 200 sells time slots and racing should take advantage of this every weekend at least ( they have used it in the past for Cup Day) you could have 4pm 10pm Friday nights encompassing the shift of putting Auckland and Addington on the same night, 11am to 6pm for Saturdays, and similar for Sunday.

As I do not have skytv  satellite ,not sure what Channel 200 (Juice ) is on and whether it was also used for Cup Day.

You can watch the yearling sales on channel 200

  12. Who is losing here ? This encourages other trainers to enter their 2yo maiden against a winner. The money is bulk funded outside the the race stake. I agree that if only 5 horses did turn up and race the turnover may suffer but again can only see that happening up North.

Only 126 lots were entered at this year's yearling sale at Karaka, with withdrawals , passed in lots , overseas buyers and southern purchases, there won't  be many 2yo's up North next season either.

But at least it is a starting point where former breeders are encouraged to get back into the game.

Hope all go well for Chch's Sale with 260 + lots up for sale.

  13. I know secondhand that Yole trains them hard, heaps of work preparing them. Whether that flattens them for race day don't  know,  or whether they have a lighter run the day before.

Can't blame anyone if his horses makes up most of the field

Remember when the Purdons had the majority of Open Class horses , only Brady and Hillier horses as opposition.

Less people would have freeview than the internet. By a long, long, long way.

I would not be so sure about that.  Spark/ Chorus are pulling the copper connections, you will need Fibre access for the internet, many harness fans are rural. Otherwise you will need Cellular Wi-fi ( unlimited ) which will cost your  discretionary spending. I believe most landlines will go too.

As for myself don't have internet , other than my cellphone wi-fi, and if I spent 5 to six hours watching,  I would have nothing left very quickly. I generally have to watch on my phone connected to free internet providers like local councils or work. Those are not convenient when at home.
