    Agree Turny.
For a 'sit and sprinter' it certainly had a very long sprint, 4 and 5 wide from the back and kept up a long sustained run to win, obvious now that they had no intention on winning on Friday.

So you don't think they should try to attract new customers and get some prime time TV exposure?    Yes it was a ridiculous situation with the guy picking Japan to upset South Africa, but I don't think that's the point - they need to attract new customers, not just old die-hard racing fans like me.  Cost of a trip to the World Cup is peanuts.

Shaky, that is the worst argument I have seen put forward. If I suddenly decide to race 2000 greyhounds do you think the greyhound association and all the other participants should make sacrifices so they ensure I succeed. Same argument used with imports, "this is costing me a fortune and you buggers should help reimburse me."

Probably a bit harsh I Know. I agree with some of it. Dogs like calamity free winning at 5 and 1/2 in sub 18.60 show they can still race beyond the years most of them are finishing, but there aren't viable options for them to still race, when you are racing young ones coming through. If they were racing each other why wouldn't it work.
Years ago Auckland used to run races now and again for 4 year olds but they could be quite one dog affairs if a bright star say was up against the c1's. Maybe restricting grades would help.
Obviously if a dog is 7 tired and grey and not capable of competing you wouldn't race it would you unless you are retarded. No different to a 4 and a half year old now.
Yes they may not be as exciting to watch but Joe blogs at the Tab or the pub will still bet on them. The antis will never stop whinging or trying to shut it down, and making dogs careers run longer by having races catered for them can surely only help the numbers.
I can't comment on the waiting until the dogs are 2 years old would help longevity. I wouldn't know.

Well you come on here saying people are leaving in droves and nobody in their right mind would bother investing when the exact opposite is true looking at the numbers. You say the TAB do not know what they are doing when looking at the numbers they know exactly what they are doing and are doing it better than they have in the past. I know several people both here in Aussie and also in New Zealand who are restricted who continue to make a profit when gambling so there is value there if you are smart enough to find it. Here in Aussie it is worse with the bookies with restrictions than it is in New Zealand so you are lucky in that respect and also your markets open a lot sooner than ours. Just wait until the NZ TAB bookies catch up with the rest of the world and restrictions become straight bans or restrictions to win $50.00. When that happens you will really have something to moan about and it is only a year or two away in my opinion.

It will be interesting whether the stipes question John Dunn over his tactics on the red hot favourite Freedom Fighter, went back to last from a good draw, never moved at all during the race and never gave the horse a chance completely different from how the horse has been previously driven.

It's unfortunate that in this day and age people expect something for nothing, if you don't do the hard work and get the best out of your dogs then you don't deserve anything, it's not hard to comprehend.
Many of the people complaining that they are going to go bust because they are not going to get a voucher for running last were training when we had no vouchers and in fact had nomination fees to even enter a race.
Its no coincidence that the 'leading' trainer in the country who has the most to gain out of running unplaced or is the person who brought in the vouchers in the first place and is in fact making quite a profit every meeting by not even having to get a winner, something is wrong with that.
There is no doubt that we have all got used to getting the petrol vouchers, but to complain about getting nothing for running 7th or 8th really reeks of desperation and that's not a good look in anyone's book.
We all strive to have a good dog and those that manage this deserve to be rewarded, not those who are running last week after week.

Was just having a convosation a couple of days ago with my boss about something similar. People who race dogs in tier 3 races here in Victoria want more prizemoney so they can afford to feed their dogs etc.
My views on this is WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!!! You would find a mojority of them are hobby trainers. Hobby being the key word. racing is a professional sport, not a charity! I'm a hobby golfer. I don't go winging to the NZPGA  that I can't afford a new putter or I have to drive an hour to play in a competition with costs me to enter, so I should at least get a petrol voucher. Greyhound racing would be one of the very few hobbies where there is financial reward.
To trainers complaining about not getting petrol vouchers for 7th an 8th Id say a new career is in order.
An to owners who say they can't cover their bills I'll leave you with a Bart Cumming s quote. 'When an owner comes to me, they have the money an I have the experience. When we're finished I have the money an they've had the experience.'

Just want to say, well done NZGRA.  New stake structure step in the right direction. Also good to see they are finally working towards a future with a vision of lifting the quality of Greyhounds, and the type of racing. Good move getting rid of the petrol vouchers, but would rather see all the money saved put into the 1st 3 placings rather than rewarding the loser's. Greyhound racing should be about winning, so all the rewards should go to the winners.

What a load of old cobblers , 4th placing to $80 and 7th and 8th nothing and the world is coming to an end. Gary is going to be without a job and Corey without a house! Get a grip everyone and think of the bigger picture, as McMissile said if your wellbeing and participation depends on getting a voucher for running last it is time to find another vocation.
The only ones who really benefitted from the vouchers were the biggest players and if they cannot pay your wages without vouchers they are doing something very wrong .
If the sport is going down the gurgler it is more likely because of the pitiful attitudes displayed here not by the association.
No matter who has been running it for since day one the "experts" reckon they are plotting our downfall.
Can things be improved, yes. Are we getting there yes

Don't taint everyone with the same brush, but you horse people seem to like sticking the boot in, despite your industry seemingly disappearing down the toilet going by all the positive posts on the thoroughbred forum.

McInerney is averaging just under that figure alone, and he's breeding a far far less quality dog than the majority of those coming in from Aus wouldn't you agree? I've been saying it for years he will be the trainer / farmer most likely to get greyhounds shut down in NZ.
