And did I even mention that we had to pay for our own because little Campbell at NZTR went dog and wouldn't support our application to Winnie's Racing Safety  Development Fund?   Campbell was great when  it came to poking his oar into how we run the club but when it came time to actually do something useful and helpful little Campbell was nowhere to be found.

    So what?
They have have years and years and years where they never had a major claim paid out in NZ so what did they do with all the premium they accumulated then?
And why do they keep offering cover it if they are so unprofitable?
And why do the Warren Buffet's of this world fall over to invest in insurance companies if they are so unprofitable?
Trying to somehow split things into reinsurers, insurers and brokers is a red herring as well - they all(and clearly you too from the piffle you are bleating) have their snouts in the insurance trough.
Anyway looking at those numbers I would be extremely dubious of their accuracy - they look massively understated to me.

One thing frustrating(bloody frustrating!) to us at Reefton is this Summer Festival of Racing.  To go into the promotion you have to charge to get in(which we refuse to do).
So everyone else around the Christmas circuit gallops and trots gets radio, newspaper and TAB poster advertising and our meeting is not mentioned.  Bloody pain in the a#*e!
We pay the same levies and fees as everyone else but because we will not fleece the poor bloke bringing the wife and kids to the races once a year....

Ironically We're Doomed the racing fare we generally produce, because our track is - as a rule - the best surface of the circuit, is superior to anything the other clubs do.   I am not saying it is outstanding but it is, in general, better than the others.  Yet because they are prepared to charge admission they get a heap of advertising.
Having said that the Hokitika entertainment in January would have been well worth the price of admission.   Not from a betting perspective but simply for the 'what the hell is going to happen next?' point of view.

Mine Host at the greatest bar in Auckland.  I must take issue with your comments.  I believe that Winston will do something good for the NZRB.  You seem to have a hang up about  NZTR. Almost an irrational hang up.  Ok,  we both know their handicapping is crap.  But I feel the biggest problem is with the costs stuff up with the NZRB and I am hopeful that the Yid can bring this into sharp focus.  I'll buy a dozen of the Bluff's best (because you have the best north of Dog Island) and explain it all to you when I am next at your wonderful venue.  It would be an absolute pleasure if Berri was there to help me bring some omniscient thoughts to your brain.

Holy moly....what's stallions got to do with whether or not Messara is good or bad for the industry? And what of Brian? I personally don't give a rats arse as to whether Brian could choose stallions. All I do know is that our industry has been stuffed up by consecutive bureaucracies who have continued to get people with very little or no knowledge or ability to run the show. All I know is that the bleating on this sites theme has been one of out cry in respect of these escalating costs and inappropriate appointments. So now Messara, a person who without doubt, is one of the most successful stud masters, in arguably a more competitive environment, who has already crafted a get out of jail free card for NSW racing, who is independent, and willing to attempt to sort the mess out, and whose appointment is being criticised!?!?! Are you kidding?!?!
it is common knowledge that Brian was the tipping point to this appointment. Is Brian doing the assessment? No. So why the bashing?
Makes me laugh when you've got blokes like Chittick senior getting involved looking for a part in the play. He was one of the most inept leaders during his time as chairman of the NZRB.
Lets not bash a chance at this early stage

    Last Saturday;
    I went to tab.co.nz
    Then I clicked on racing.
    Then I clicked on today
Then I clicked on M40  Aintree
I saw no mention of fixed odds betting being available on race six.
Although I have a very good knowledge of the intricate points of the Income Tax Act 2007; things such as Fair Dividend Rate and other arcane complexities, my intellectual grunt is inadequate to comprehend the TAB's web site.  I will use a moistened flannel to wipe the remains of the omelette off my face.

This morning's NZ Herald devoted 40 column centimetres to horse racing.  It was all about the most famous horse race in the world with an estimated audience of 600,000, as they reported.
So, think back to last Saturday when the TAB had betting on five races from Aintree.  The sixth race was the Grand National.  You got it!  They did not offer betting on the world's most famous horse race.  Somebody has to apply a blow torch to the rectal area of TAB management.  This is totally unbelievable.
Their argument, which is as weak as urine, will be that they had more than 24 starters.  For God's sake; they have spent huge sums developing a fixed odds system that can accommodate a field size of up to 200 starters, or even more.  Look at the golf betting.  Okay, they could not accommodate quinella or trifecta betting with a field in excess of 24.  Just go win and place.
Here was a great opportunity to boost the industry's income and it was let go.

Suspect he will see through that BS simply because of his vast experience.  They will blather the corporate speak and he will cut through it(maybe not directly with them but certainly in his report to Winston.
The big question is how much credibility will Winston give Messara's report and how much sway will his officials (Glenda and John) have to moderate his actions.
I cannot wait for Messara to report  and even if a lot of small Club's and courses go by the wayside(us included) this is the best news for NZ racing in years and years in my opinion.  The only thing to rival it would be a Winx being developed here and the owners refusing to sell.

I get the impression that like the celebrated "Donald" Messara is going to drain the swamp on Jackson Street.  But he will find that the swamp is run by determined ugly critters, and those critters will fight tooth and nail to get Messara's report ignored.  Those ugly critters do little for NZ racing but they are a formidable foe.
    Good luck John.
It is now 37 years since John tried to buy a NZ breeding outfit, but the politicians and misguided pressure groups thwarted that bid.  That failed bid gave the then young Messara a great lesson in the filthy behind the scenes machinations of NZ politics.

Big call.  Tommy Smith never spared him even after he had broken down.  And they didn't set the tracks up to suit him in those days either.
Two unbelievable horses but Dufficy and Radley were surprised the other day when McKee effectively conceded that Winx was better than Sunline.
Wonderful wonderful horses from different eras and how good is it to have lived to see them all?

No didn't go Ohokaman.  One of my committee did though and I have heard nothing so it cannot have been overly impressive..
I am so disillusioned with the way it is going and the impossibility of getting any traction with these guys that I simply could not be bothered wasting 3 or 4 hours and $60 worth of gas getting there.
What i do know though is they needed numbers 'for catering reasons'.  Presumably a 'free' scoff and drinks at the industry's expense.  Now we occasionally have a  meeting of all clubs here and we certainly don't all gobble industry funded tucker at such times.  The gravy train rumbles on.

Barry are you sure you went to Rotorua today?  I also went to Rotorua with some friends today and had a really wonderful day.   Beautiful weather, some excellent racing, excellent facilities, just a really enjoyable, relaxing day with a good atmosphere on course.  And I am not talking through my pocket, perhaps unlike barryb, as I found winners hard to find.  The only disappointment forme was OP scratching himself yet again.  I have been to goodness knows how many dreary, boring, pointless meetings over the years - some of those midweek Te Rapa days certainly on top of the lst - but today was certainly not one of those.  I have always found a good  atmosphere at Rotorua.  If Barry wants music then why doesn't he just pop down to his local and put a coin in the duke box and sit there all day sucking on his beer listening to his music.

I was at Arawa Park today and spent it on the grass catching up with friends from yesteryear. Although it did seem along time between races it was a great day relaxing in the sun and the tote windows seemed pretty busy .Usually they have a woman in the public stand playing good music between races but was glad they’ve ditched that annoying Music they used to play as the horses were entering the birdcage . If you wanted to attend a Terrible meeting Barry you should of been at Trenthams meeting the week before oaks day . Also on a big plus today which is usually uncommon was the general public clapping the winner of each race as they returned to scale.
