    Yes, a very good track.

They do have to prepare it for harness only, though.

I may be accused of being biased but I believe Reefton has an equally good track  and is prepared for both harness and gallops.

    Excellent facilities, too.

You're not biased in saying that you're a good judge.  As good a surface as there is in the South Island though the track is far too small for a thoroughbred Ckub

Yes, you had mentioned that before Tom. Contrarily though, Mr. Moncur provided invaluable assistance towards Foxton obtaining maximum grant funding from the Racing Safety and Development Fund for the above projects as well as considerable legal and other assistance with complex negotiations between the club and the Manawatu Racecourse Act Trustees and liaison with NZTR. Without that, it is probably unlikely that these projects would be progressing.

Can I ask you Leggy who paid for these gates?  The Club or NZTR(either directly or indirectly via a loan or some other arrangement -  NZTR being quite prone to paying for major expenditure via stealthy methods).

  3. We have the same thing here.  Everytime daughter plays basketball there is a 'thanks' ribbon across the scoreboard thanking(among others) the NZ Racing Board.

Always said the NZ RB should insist on signage saying 'NZ Racing Board supporting local sport' or something akin to that to generate more positive publicity for the industry from that sort of donation.  I think they gave them $10k for the scoreboards.

John Messara with his “blank sheet of paper” has the ability to turn our industry around. Just hope he doesn’t have to sift through an orchestrated litany of lies from our current Administrators whose sole concern is saving their own jobs.

Suspect he will see through that BS simply because of his vast experience.  They will blather the corporate speak and he will cut through it(maybe not directly with them but certainly in his report to Winston.

The big question is how much credibility will Winston give Messara's report and how much sway will his officials (Glenda and John) have to moderate his actions.

I cannot wait for Messara to report  and even if a lot of small Club's and courses go by the wayside(us included) this is the best news for NZ racing in years and years in my opinion.  The only thing to rival it would be a Winx being developed here and the owners refusing to sell.

Yeah I knew I had mentioned it (about a hundred times at last count) but just like to poke the tiger regularly.  I'm pleased Campbell was useful to you guys cos he was only a pain in the arse for us.  In fact one time when they were trying to shut us down and he came down and as an aside referred to 'those wankers on race cafe'.  He may not have used that particular term but that was the gist.

  6. And did I even mention that we had to pay for our own because little Campbell at NZTR went dog and wouldn't support our application to Winnie's Racing Safety  Development Fund?   Campbell was great when  it came to poking his oar into how we run the club but when it came time to actually do something useful and helpful little Campbell was nowhere to be found.

Has anyone been to this latest round of industry conversations with Allen, Saundry, Rennell et al....??

And more importantly, were they impressed, and did they learn anything....??    Anything good that is....

Meetings at Westport last week ( come in Tom ) and Invercargill and Dunedin this week.

No didn't go Ohokaman.  One of my committee did though and I have heard nothing so it cannot have been overly impressive..

I am so disillusioned with the way it is going and the impossibility of getting any traction with these guys that I simply could not be bothered wasting 3 or 4 hours and $60 worth of gas getting there.

What i do know though is they needed numbers 'for catering reasons'.  Presumably a 'free' scoff and drinks at the industry's expense.  Now we occasionally have a  meeting of all clubs here and we certainly don't all gobble industry funded tucker at such times.  The gravy train rumbles on.

100% the right decision. Let the pretenders come down under and try their luck against Aust and NZ's best. I hope Winx can go on and win a 4th Cox Plate. She's better than Kingston Town.

Big call.  Tommy Smith never spared him even after he had broken down.  And they didn't set the tracks up to suit him in those days either.

Two unbelievable horses but Dufficy and Radley were surprised the other day when McKee effectively conceded that Winx was better than Sunline.

Wonderful wonderful horses from different eras and how good is it to have lived to see them all?

I doubt there are too many are there?  Unless they are career dairy farmers with no debt. I guess a dairy farmer has the option of getting out of the racing game but it may not be as easy to extract themselves from the farm business.

Ok I didn't know that however over a long period of time they have done OK?

Been a real problem in the last five years or so.  The previous CEO had an empire building mentality and promised the farmers here the earth but delivered merely massive losses and a seriously impaired balance sheet.

On top of that the banks have totally lost confidence in the Coast (farms that is) so the guys are getting squeezed income wise and also by the financiers. One instance I heard of had a debt of $20m - the bank put them under and could only get an $8m offer which itself fell through.  At the height of the boom it would have been worth a lot lot lot more than the debt but when the banks lose confidence........

Same with the Westland Dairy Company.

Not lately they haven't.  And despite having a flash new CEO who appears to be doing a great job turning the Company around Westland will pay less than Fonterra this year as well.

The Dairy industry is akin to the racing industry in that the blokes producing the product are at the whim and mercy of the overpaid fat cats at the top who have forgotten who ultimately pays the bills.  Both industries are afflicted with Boards and Executives who go off on tangent schemes then when the proverbial hits the fan and the (inevitable) enormous bill comes in they suddenly decide to retire 'for personal reasons'.

Bloody frustrating and when you are dealing with farmer clients who are struggling it is quite sad.  I would love to wave a magic wand and fix everything but like the racing industry they are being swept along in a wave over which they have no control.

That won’t give him more than 30 winners, so there will still be a lot of leeway to make up.

    Just saying.

If you go as bad as Insider is predicting James you will be welcome at the next Reefton meeting.

Good luck Champ cos you deserve it.  The punishment far far far outweighed the crime.  You backed your own horse ffs!

Could I ask cafers for an opinion as to who brought Aussie racing into greater disrepute - James McDonald or Damien Oliver?  I know the rules changed so don't bother going there.

Seeking expert opinion on R6 at Avondale. Lieth Innes stopped ridding his horse Sistabeel say 20m from line and is beaten a nose. Front on did show winner rolling out and possibly touching his horse(possibly the reason he stops riding). To me surely the stipes should have asked some questions and mentioned it in report. To me it looked bad. Maybe I need glasses or maybe the stipes do?

Last week that horse at Awapuni charged the gates and got an early start - they didn't notice that either

    Should've gone to spec savers

Taking nothing away from the efforts of the horses and their connections but I'm a little dubious about the quality of this years race compared to recent renewals.

The winner was clearly the best stayer, aided by a superb ride, but he was just short of the best staying three-year-olds in Melbourne in the spring.

Civil Disobedience was never on the track but he was only beaten just over four lengths. There are always exceptions but one wouldn't expect Tasmanian Derby form to stack-up in the AJC Derby.

I've rarely missed a NZ Derby in thirty years and year in year out there's at least a couple of standout physical types in the yard. This year there were plenty of nice types, prepared  immaculately, but nothing that jumped out at you. Certainly they were a more refined lot, probably a reflection of what we're breeding. Time will tell I guess.

The fact that Murray Baker took him to Aussie in the Spring is quite a good clue as to the respect he has for his ability.  Maybe he strengthened up a lot over his early summer break.

And if he is off to the Sydney Derby one would expect him to be competitive given the judgment  usually shown by M Baker.  He is no mug

Really. Is this what YOU WANT. hesi are you Bernie, or related, as that is the only way you could respond as you have. No surprise nz racing is completely fucked and your response completely misses the point, that while you have fwits plundering what money is available no effing future. Serve up as much shit as possible, yeah that will really encourage newbies as they can really relate to the shit that is being served (NOT). Hesi put online pokies on tab website ? That what you want. How many stable hands, track riders, related suppliers needed for off shore shit racing and pokies. None. Hope you not part of the future brains trust for an industry that is about  6 months from no return.?

I think you will find 'Bernie' runs NZTR Firepipe so much as the general stakeholders might not be too overawed with his performance to date you cannot blame him for the TAB showing North American product on a Sunday or any other morning.

I get the message that you are not too impressed with Bernard however and if he reads racecafe(no doubt after a big day at Ellerslie eating industry funded tucker and drinking industry funded ale)I hope his feelings won't be hurt.

Was it Beauden Tommy? On its early runs the 2.8 was a gift and the word was out on Lodi so some happy punters out there:)

Yes it was (beauden).  No detriment to me  - the one I backed ran last and (clearly) would not have won anyway. But when you look at it ...

In writing this looked at the NZTR and nothing in the stewards report.

Beauden would have won regardless( he bolted in) but trackside showed it clear as day. His gate opened a fraction of a second early.

  17. Anyone know if there was an enquiry there?  The head on of the start showed the winner charged the gates and his gate opened before the others.  It would not have made a difference as he won comprehensively but i would expect more than a 'clear to pay' outcome which it seems has occurred.

Drever and his cohorts will obviously go down. But the real culprit is the lawyer who helped register the company Avondale Bowling Club Ltd.  Why as a lawyer would you register such a company knowing its just there for one transaction to fool the end buyer he is dealing with the real entity. Interesting what the Law Society will do. I guess nothing.

Might not be a lawyer.  I form companies for clients all the time and it is easy to form companies yourself on the net.  Five minute job in the case of a simple company.

As for the lawyer being in trouble why?  If someone comes in here and says I want to form a company it is generally no issue.  if however you discover they are using it for dodgy purposes then there are ethical considerations and remedies that I will not go into.  in this case he may have used two lawyers one for the buy and one for the sale so how would one know what the other is doing.

It is drawing a long bow to blame the lawyer here (on the face of it anyway)

NZTR seems to spend a lot of time on nuts and bolts e.g. putting trials videos up early whereas it could spend more resources ensuring that club members from various clubs are better informed about club land sales.

The Avondale Bowling Club saga is quite shocking.  https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/property/101794140/bowling-club-land-was-sold-twice-in-one-day--with-a-525000-price-jump

That club is a stones throw away from the racing club with some cross affiliations. If its that easy for a few office holders at the bowling to get together to snare $800,000 its not beyond possibilty some racing club in New Zealand could suffer the same fate. Wouldn't happen at Avondale Racing Club under current President but at the same time I query the judgement of any committee member at Avondale who as a member of the Bowling club didn't query that land sale.

Quite extra ordinary reading of the bowling club and more extraordinary why those involved aren't in jail.

Well you would be a bit dumb if you were an incorporated society Board/Committee Member who allowed it to sell land without first obtaining a registered valuation.  And if that registered valuation was so much lower than market value then one would expect the Valuer's insurers to be called upon to redress the balance.

The whole thing is that you are not dealing with your own money and in such circumstances one would want to be very very careful to dot one's 'i's and cross ones 't's lest it come back to bite one on the a#*e so to speak

In this case one would expect Drever to have to account to the club for the difference because Incorporated Society rules(under the Act) quite specifically prohibit 'pecuniary gain' for a member of an incorporated society from his or her dealings with the same

Mrs Cubes isn't a great studier of form or breeding or somesuch

She just plonks her 5 each way on whatever is South Island trained or bred or has a South Island jockey

As an Otago lass , she is parochial to the max

And it goes without saying she often has a greater return than the Cubemeister......

You cannot possibly beat logic Cubes.  I have a mate who reckons an old Scotchman told him to back any horse that has 2 and 4 in it's last two starts and he also regularly takes 2 and 4 in quinellas($20 or $50 jobs not $1 quinellas).  He picks up a bloody lot of them I tell ya.  Right until I get in on the act then the theory goes sour.
