Not sure if this is related, but in the South Island they are now holding 0 - 1 win races. There is a logjam of horses around the rating 70 grade because most one win horses struggle to compete with horses with multiple wins that have dropped back to r70 grade. It is not uncommon to see a 5 - 6 win (or more!) horse in a rating 70 race.
  2. Hey Lloyd - CA is nominated to trial over 800m at Cranbourne this Monday. Will be good to see how he has travelled. I don't know if he is up to the best Aussie sprinters but I sure hope he is! He has fantastic stats on good or better ground and has run some pretty impressive sectionals despite the level of competition he has faced (not many have pushed him in NZ) His weakness is dead or worse tracks. He left the telegraph field for dead over the first 600m but out of the chute he couldn't keep up the same pace in the softer ground. Lisa Alpress has said that the most amazing thing about him is that he just gets quicker as he gets into his race - after his stewards win she said he was accelerating as he crossed the line! Love the horse - has to be about the most exciting runner we have got and can't wait to see how he measures up. He will be getting my money - happy to look wise or fooloish with you mate!
  3. Agree Mardy. He has ridden for us before and was a real professional and a pleasure to talk to after the race. He is obviously getting a great education and is a credit to his mentor. All the best DS - looking forward to seeing you boot home many more!
  4. My biggest gripe is all the money I pay just so the nags can eat grass and roll in the mud...
  5. Meeting 6 (Canterbury) Race 8 Horse 13 Chillydip
  6. Don't think so, but it seems like a good idea. If we could have metro racing (Akld/Wgtn/Chch?) with better stakes, tracks and facilities then we would have a better product for punters and to sell overseas. It would also give owners something to aim for with their horses. Outside of this you could have provincial racing that runs much like it does now. Clubs and racecourses can continue to run their programmes (incl feature days) and provide options for horses not good enough to race in the city and also for horses looking to step up to metro grade. The industry would most likely need to fund the development of the metro tracks, but it would be done on the basis that the increased revenue from punting and selling the product would make it a worthwhile investment. Maybe start with one track (as much as it pains me to say it would most likely be Ellerslie!) and then expand?
  7. I am in a number of syndicates that race horses in both the North and South Island. We have horses that have won up to 6 races (up to R85) and still struggle to break even once training / travel etc are taken into account. It would be great to see a more reasonable levle of stakes for the lower grades, even if it was restricted to horses that had cleared maidens (eg. $10k min stakes for 1+ win horses) $250 - 300k is a big stake for any race and while I love to see the fields that a $1m + stake attracts we can't make NZ racing internationally competitive from the top down. We need to focus on the viability of the whole game from the bottom up. I believe that if more people could race a horse and reasonably expect to break even then ownership would be a much easier sell to the public.
  8. Hasn't been much said about this lately but a "$200,000 Match Race v Coup Align" is listed in the program for Couplands Mile day in the middle of NZ Cup Week at Riccarton. Listed in the Southern Racing program loaded to http://www.nzracing.co.nz today. Full details available from the CJC. Looks like it might actually happen - here's hoping!
  9. Saw her in the catalogue today! She was entered in the sale when it was thought that she wouldn't race again, but it now looks like her injury may not be as serious as first thought. She has now been withdrawn from the sale and will be given a chance to recover and hopefully race again. It would be good to see her run again for the Premier Racing Club - Kevin Gray had a high opinion of her and if she comes back as well as she left she will almost certainly win races. Fingers crossed!
  10. My wife and I have just returned from Hong Kong and while there we decided to check out a Wed night meet at Happy Valley. There was a class one race run but no feature races as the international races were run at Sha Tin the week before. For around NZ$120 each we were picked up from our hotel, taken to the racecourse, shown through the racing museum and then provided a full buffet dinner and open bar (drinks included) in a room on the 8th(!) floor of the grandstand for the evening. A $30 HKD betting voucher, comprehensive form guides and a knowledgeable guide to assist were also included and we were taken down to the rail on the finish line for one of the races. The Wednesday night crowd would rival anything we get for our biggest race days here in NZ (Cup days included) and the setting for the night races was spectacular. Can't recommend the experience highly enough and can't wait to get back there for more!
  11. It looks to me like the Racing Board had a drop in income for the last financial year and chose to dip into their reserves to maintain their level of industry funding. This seems to be a responsible decision and perhaps it is exactly why they keep reserves. Imagine if they had reduced industry funding by $22m... that paltry $6,000 stake our horse went around for the other day may have been even smaller!
  12. Don't think Red Ruler won any as a four year old and look at him now - he is absolutely flying!
  13. Nerula, I have no preference either way as to the merits of this proposal but agree with most that change is required. It is never easy and often unpopular (in some quarters at least) but this is no reason not to pursue a better system. What I can not believe is the apparent arrogance shown by the NZRB in handling this matter. If, as it appears, HRNZ made their concerns clear and asked for clarification and answers to their legitimate questions, then to stonewall them and still expect their support in moving forward with One Racing defies logic. I would love to see all the codes working more closely together for the betterment af all. As a relative youngster I don't want to be around in 50 years witnessing another governance review that goes nowhere. But I can not think of any other business where one party could treat another with such disdain and yet still expect to have a functioning relationship. Agree with your Q&As and most of your sentiment, but goodwill is a two way street.
