Be intresting to see stipes report.....including trials 3 dogs did hock injuries....track was like concrete, i rang stipe from home saying the truck is not watering the whole track, what did I get slammed phone(thanks Mike).....look I don't want to bring it up here but where do you go?,, They pick on every other thing than tracks,makes Phil Greens charge look average , how many dogs are finished because of poor track work....

Merv as you well know, he is no longer a vet, and yes his disqualification ends in December and rightfully so....murderers get less,7 years is to long let alone 10 years,,,,he has and always will be a great asset to us......Mike at the end of the day I am really angry that they are trying to force Phil to resign when he was elected by the northen region and it should be up to us to say wether he goes or not.......And as I say should mccarther be heading our board as a trainer with a positive( and yes I class that as a drug in my opinion )

Look at the end of the day the guy made a mistake........he did the right thing and put the dogs down by a vet,( which is more than a lot do ) it was the way they were disposed of is the problem...........What upsets me is that we have a dirty rotten chairman who is a drug cheat,he is the only standing board member who was part of .....rocket ship, dutch book, wellington getting three group ones without a track( sorry he gets there vote to stay in) the demise of manawatu( sorry they would not vote for him ) and all these relaxed charges on drugs and yet he heads our industry.....Mr MACARTHER DO THE RIGHT THING AND RESIGN AS YOU ARE ASKING MR GREEN TO DO FOR BRINING THE SPORT IN DISREPUTE..........because you are the most failed person we have had in my 40 years in the sport.l

Also merv ask our lp rep how many off his dogs are sitting in the same pit.......we need a total clean out at the top

Mike is right.  Even if you dropped the Aussie breds out of the list there is still 70% left and the struggle at the moment is applications for taking retired hounds.  No matter what, there is not enough homes.
 
But completely disagree about differentiating between where they come from.  People move to NZ to set up a new home but do we send them back to their own country when they retire.  No.  Because they have worked and contributed to the big IRD pool (hopefully) and they are entitled to their pension scheme.  It should be no different for the dogs.  We have both.  Although probably at the moment we have more home bred dogs but we are always on the look out for new dogs for new owners.  And for new owners, that is more than likely where their first dog will come from.  The comments Merv and Mike have made are from people who are owner/trainers.  We on the other hand are trying to encourage more people into the sport.  The cost of bringing a dog over is ludicrous but to add more taxes and more costs will not be enticing.  And then to add another $2800 when its career is over will not happen.  Do you not think we need more owners?  20% of the punters do 80% of the turn over.  Take Craig Rendle who was invited along quite a few years ago for a fun day out and would now be one of the biggest owners in the sport.  And most of his first dogs were all from Australia.
 
Yes, breeders do have to take more responsibility and I was under the impression most do.  And it is probably just as well that not all the trainers use GAP as can you imagine the size of the list then?
 
Buying a GAP property sounds like a wonderful idea but I can assure you, it would not be cheaper than what they pay now.  Even after the costs of setting up, the on going costs will be very high.  Wages being one of the biggest of those costs.  But if it meant accepting more retired hounds at one time .. great.  But we still need more applications to adopt - how do we achieve that.
 
I have heard so many varying opinions over the past week it is amazing.  And all differ from the small kennel, medium kennel are then the large kennels.  They differ from owner/trainers to public trainers.  And then owners have a different perspective too. 
 
And Merv, of course you would bring Clone Your Own back home - that is your baby but are you saying if he stayed, he could not enter into the GAP system over there upon retirement?  We've sent a few dogs back to their owners in Australia when they retired but most have ended up in new homes here once they finished their careers.  The ones that are pet capable of course

Actually Merv, if you look closely at the list, you will find about 75% or more are NZ bred dogs.  But the entire list is made up of trainers who use GAP religiously and wish to see their retired hound have a chance at being a pet whether it was an import or NZ bred.  The problem lies in the fact that we have more dogs racing and retiring than GAP can handle.
 
Any dog racing in this country deserves the opportunity to go to GAP of the trainer so desires regardless of it's original nationality.  They have raced in this country and contributed to the betting pools which make up our stake money so yes, they are entitled.
 
Where the stake money goes is of no relevance to you or GAP.  And you can not dictate that kennels should stock from only NZ breds - it is our choice how we choose to stock our racing kennels.
 
And you should stop being prejudice to Australian imports - we need them.  Think outside of your own kennel requirements and look at the bigger picture.  New owners into this sport either have the choice of buying an Australian import as there are so many for sale there or a NZ bred that did not cut it with the trainer.  Who in NZ breeds racing greyhounds specifically to sell?  So if we want to encourage more new owners then that is their best avenue of getting a good dog and being involved in the sport.
 
Plus, they have made up a huge part of our current breeding programs including your Clone Your Own whose grandmother was an Australian import
 
It seems that people breeding in NZ register their pups as soon as they are born on the GAP list plus any other dog they have in their kennel in the hope of their name being at the top of the list upon retirement.  I see that there are blocks of names on the list that belong to one kennel so if that kennel retires them all at once then GAP will have no room for any other dog until that block of dogs have been tested and rehomed. 
 
So how does one create a system that is fair for all?  This is what needs to be thought out !!!  Constructive ideas are welcome :-)

Glenn,I agree with what ashoka is saying, phil green came up with the idea to run these as non totes, John macarther takes over and makes them tote races.........Why, as is said the races changed as special event races after grnz realised they had cocked up after the draw was done and dogs would have to be regraded.....in my opinion the idea is great but as usual grnz muck  it up for everyone because they don't understand there own rules.

Great to hear Sir Colin meads, not only a legend rugby player, but a very entertaining speaker who you could listen to his stories all night.
 
Also a great acceptance speech from Bob Bond with Bright Star, not easy to do.
 
And real good to see so many people from the other two codes there.

I was at Maitland the day the transend time got a positive------it was very unusual what the trainer of the dog was doing before the races,I turned to my owners and asked why would a trainer have his dog covered from head to tail with a towel rubbing shit out of it and looking like a nervous first timer, I ask who was it and who is the dog? when told I could not belive it, I thought maybe I should try it,it must warm them up........and it was a hot day.

Luke you need to think before you type.------a lot of the aussie owners you talk about put a lot more back into nz than a lot of kiwis including you, a lot breed litters here out of the imports,rear them here and race there pups here,so the stakes don't go back to aussie.

Josh, just ignore gary he is a knocker from way back.----ask him if he wants to buy the dog? don't think so, he will just sit here and bag all,just look at his posts on greyhound data under Gary Ryan, just wants to be a know all. 

One thing I do agree is our LP rep should not head any committee as this is a conflict of interest as he should be impartial,and should be there to represent LP's
