WOODBINE got a reaction from Pegasus 9 in Tavistock injured.
I wish Cambridge Stud all the best with Tavistock’s recovery
This stallion is a world class sire that the NZ breeding industry can ill afford to lose
He is the best stallion I have bred to in 30 years in the breeding game

The lightly raced son of He’s Remarkable- Age of Chivalry ran an outstanding 2nd in today’s Group 1 race at Caulfield the Rulpert Clarke Stakes. Well done to an understated NZ sire

He’s Remarkable is getting a steady number of winners this current racing season and has a runner in the Sir Rulpert Clarke Stakes G1 in Melbourne this Saturday
He is obviously a reasonable racehorse sire to breed to

To have a large number of foals unregistered suggests that he has served a number of owner horses

WOODBINE got a reaction from Dopey in Showcasing had his 13th 2 year old winner in Singapore
The departed stallion Showcasing had his 13th 2 year old winner this season when No Regrets won in Singapore. This performance must be close to a record for a NZ stallion.
He also has a number of trial performers who have yet to start so he may extend this number of winners before season end.
I note that he has 8 weanlings for sale at next week’s.Karaka May Sale so they should attract attention.

With the banishment of Power to a small stud in Queensland (I can’t locate a website for their business) what type of opportunity is he going to get there..
There is a lesson to be learned here and that is to be careful breeding to any shuttle stallion not partially owned or controlled by NZers

WOODBINE got a reaction from Dopey in Australian sires that would not be out of place in NZ
There are two Aussie sires that I have bred to over the years that are reasonably priced and have achieved very good race results with their progeny namely Domesday and Shamus Award.
They both have stood for A$10,000 and have enjoyed reasonable books. I suggested Shamus Award to one leading Waikato studmaster late last year and he said that he could not afford him. As a Cox Plate and Australian Guineas winner He would be among the best performed stallions to stand here.
He is now standing in Victoria which is good news for that state.
At the May weaning sale you will see the first crop of Telperions. The foals I have seen are outstanding

WOODBINE got a reaction from CosmicBlackie in GST refunds imminent on stakes percentages
I have a good working knowledge of this issue as I was the GST advisor to the Australian Racing Board in 1999 and 2000. The division of prize money into three distinct pools was initially raised by myself with Andrew Harding - the then CEO of the ARB (now deputy CEO of Hong Kong Jockey Club). The ARB took up this opportunity and it estimated that in its first year it saved unregistered owners some A$7 million.
This division of prize money was first raised by myself with the NZTR Board in 1999 after a similar change was made to the Rules of Racing in Australia. This opportunity fail on deaf ears with NZTR for 13 years despite regular efforts by myself to promote it This lost GST Refund opportunity for unregistered owners during this period would have been many millions of dollars. Again old style thinking.
The opportunity was taken up by the NZTR CEO at that time Murray Holmes with great support from NZTR Board member Greg McCarthy and congratulations to both these forward thinking gentlemen.
The GST Refunds yet to be received by unregistered owners will exceed $1 million which will be a welcome receipt

WOODBINE got a reaction from Dopey in Showcasing - Our best sire of 2 year olds
Former Haunui Farm stallion Showcasing (GB) (Oasis Dream) is enjoying a break-out season in Europe in 2018.  Along with siring another G1 winner – Advertise - he has a further four stakes winning 2YO’s to his credit with three of those coming in the last seven days!

Advertise landed the G1 Phoenix Stakes at The Curragh in August.  That was off the back of an impressive victory in the G2 July Stakes at Newmarket having finished runner-up in the Coventry at Royal Ascot second up.  He ended his two-year-old season with a runner-up performance in the G1 Dewhurst Stakes in the middle of October and goes to the paddock one of the best colts in Europe at the present time.

This past week however, has seen Showcasing’s 2YO’s prove formidable in stakes races around Europe, starting with the win of Showout in he Listed Prix Zeddan at Deauville on the 23rd of October.  Next came Mohaather on the 27th of October in the G3 Horris Hill Stakes at Newbury and Devant topped things off yesterday in the G3 Prix Miesque at Maisons-Laffitte.

Weekend racing in New Zealand also saw two further 2 year old stakes performers for Showcasing with Last Sight and Appellant finishing second and third in the Listed Wellesley Stakes respectively.  Three other Showcasing fillies finished 4th, 5th and 6th in the same race.
Last season’s stakes winning 2YO’s Xpression and Bit Lippy have kicked off their 3YO seasons in fine form with Xpression the current favourite for the G1 1000 Guineas whilst Bit Lippy is a leading contender in the 2000 Guineas.
Showcasing did not return to Haunui Farm this season however, he will be well represented at Australasia's 2019 yearling sales whilst his current 2018 foals will be his last Southern Hemisphere crop.

WOODBINE got a reaction from Baz (NZ) in Some ideas for improving the Racing codes
1                 The NZ Racing Act provisions be merged into the existing Gaming Act. This one Act would allow all gaming sources to be administered under one central Act which going forward would allow any inefficiencies in racing (and we know that there are many) to be measured and corrected against other gaming (casinos etc.). It is always easier to improve your position by legislation if you are combined with other gaming activities than having a standalone and isolated Racing Act

2                  NZ racing has limited interest and connection with two NZ generations – my children and grandchildren.  This is a major matter that I believe must be addressed in your report. This interest has to be resurrected otherwise your work is in vain so racing should go to areas/activities where the younger generations go. My children and grandchildren are Lotto customers and Lotto shops are based in many mainstream shopping areas – supermarkets, book stores, country stores and standalone businesses. There is no reason why Lotto shops should not sell racing wagering products. When I was a young man the TAB was invited by the NZ Government of the time to operate Lotto systems. The TAB board in their wisdom decided that as Lotto was a gaming competitor to the TAB they would not get involved with Lotto. Some intelligent thinking at the time.

3                 Going forward when your report is issued it requires quality implementation leadership. I believe that Sir Peter Vela (and perhaps John Messara himself) would be a good team to perhaps co-chair the Implementation of the required changes to structure etc.

4                 NZ horse breeding has lost its connection with NZ rural farmers. In NZ we have a farming representative body called Federated Farmers and last year I introduced their CEO to a group of Council members of NZTBA and there was a hope that there be a commercial association with Fed Farmers which has 23,000 farming members. Fed Farmers is keen for such an association and NZ breeding could market itself to fellow NZ dairy, sheep and cattle farmers. There is also a very active organization called Young Farmers and they could also be approached for an association.

WOODBINE got a reaction from Breeder in Combined Breeding Farm for Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds
With NZ Bloodstock recently deciding to provide services to both codes it would seem logical to me that breeding farms could potentially stand both thoroughbred and standardbred stallions at the same location
i believe that such an operation could provide breeders with potential cost savings on foaling fees and agistment rates which is much needed in today’s hard economic times

WOODBINE got a reaction from La Zip in Lope de Vega and his sire Sharmadal
Lope de Vega is achieving great race results with his Australian crops from when he stood at the Pattanack Farm fiasco. He stands in Ireland for Euros 60,000 which is an outstanding stud fee.
His best European son in Belardo stands at Haunui Farm and served just under 100 mares last season. His grand sire Sharmadal is regarded as one of the world’s leading stallions and his speedy 2 year old son Ghibellines who stands at White Robe Lodge in the Deep South has made a impression with his 5 yearlings selling strongly at the 2018 Karaka Yearling Sales.
I would encourage breeders to consider Belardo and Sharmadal for their 2018 coverings.
