Stables reacted to tasman man 11 in Is it time 4 a national strike
I've got an above average involvement and investment in racing.......I attend on course regularly ,bet modestly regularly[badly] ,belong to two clubs and get involved in a few associated gatherings.
I have small racing shares ....av 10 % .....in over 20 horses [both codes] and own 20% and breed from 1 x mare.
So I participate...in the past I have worked around stables and a stud, and was a bit-part Journalist [quite good too] and was Auditor of a couple of clubs for a short while .
I am a bit dismayed at the reaction to these proposed changes in NZ Racing....we all saw it coming , we predicted things were somewhat dire and many were expecting a 'chainsaw' or 'slash and burn' approach.
Sudden Insolvency then Co-vid 19 on top has just sped up the need for desperate measures.
Yet there is now an outpouring of grief........folk worried about the loss of tracks which Messara called a disgrace , and changes to on-course experience which we acknowledge few bother to enjoy etc etc
These are the attitudes dogging the industry for decades....bias ,regional self-interest ,no collaboration and reluctance to change.
We call for CHANGE ,then object to CHANGE !
I say lets get this new era underway , opportunities will arise for many of those who lost their jobs...I really feel for them......the keen and smart ones will find something in the industry !
But GO ON STRIKE.......forget it !
If racing in NZ stops I can still participate to virtually the same level as currently should I wish ......I have previously. Most Kiwis can.
If you young enough get involved in the administration side......create don't cry !

Totally agree if they are only used for gallops , but if some trotting clubs merged and ran their meetings at awapuni I think that would make some sense and better suit the horses we already have.It depends on which clubs survive the carnage

One of a few joys of owning a horse is to have a decent punt on it  - and it wins. Stuff a few grand in the wallet and it feels great. Thats your walking around money for ages.
So you phone bet instead and you want to draw it out. It goes into your account and the bean counter says , "where did that come from"The Taxman wants to know what it is. Nothing beats folding.
iI I cant bet with cash and collect cash I will have no more to do with the game.
D McK cant be that big a fool, its the Clubs pay the tote staff. No this will be an effort to take some cost out of Clubs. And then introduce a sneaky transfer of costs from Rita/ TAB for say the product they claim to own.

I think these tracks will largely be used for training and trials rather than race meetings, and they aren't costing those trainers anything so I'm sure they don't think they will do any harm. Why look a gift horse in the mouth. If you asked Mr Pitman whether he would rather $13m went into an all weather track for trials or whether he would prefer an extra four $500,000 races at Riccarton each year his answer might be interesting. If you asked the public whether they would rather have an all weather track or a public grandstand to shelter in and be able to view the races from, their answer might be interesting.
And remember a lot of our abandoned meetings occur during the summer time on slippery tracks. If Wingatui gets abandoned after race one when a horse falls over I suppose the public announcement will go something like "Right, we're done here. Everyone get in their trucks we will finish this meeting at Riccarton, next race in five hours."

Correct. But the Australian Racing Industry has used the money on Infrastructure, upgraded tracks, new tracks, new facilities, equine welfare, increased Country and City Stakes etc etc. it has also received a lot of the money from where it is generated, ie, betting. What has NZ Racing done with the money they have received? What has the Industry done to “REDUCE” the huge costs it has allowed to escalate to where they are today?

When we started to read of 30% job cuts I don't think many of us thought it would be the front line staff: race commentators, camera crew, and now tote operators. I think we were all hoping it would be the parasites that no one would even notice missing. Getting rid of 30% of the lower paid staff will only reduce the wage bill by about 15%, or less.
I suppose next it will be the jockeys and trainers shown the door. Surely they aren't all that important or relevant any more.
We have yet to read of a single overpaid no-hoper given the boot.
When most organisations seriously restructure the first thing they do is get rid of a whole tier of overpaid senior management. The level below can almost always step up to do their jobs for considerably less money.

Winnie's cash splash got me thinking. Where's all this headed and how did he sell it to Grant Robertson and the lefties so easily?
    So here's my prediction:
Legislation glides through uncontested to quash the Racing Act, acquire racing's assets and broaden betting parameters.
Brookfields, via Infratil, purchase and merge SkyTV & NZTAB. With their recently purchased access to 5G they now have exclusive rights for exchange betting, advanced in play and in run betting options in NZ.
All good news for the punter, sporting bodies and Greens (obsolete racetracks become parks and refugee facilities) but.......
Food for thought #1: Is Sky's current share price hike solely because their customers can watch sport again soon?
Food for thought #2: Why has RITA taken an axe to Trackside, their prime sales and marketing outlet, so quickly?

    Simple solution I believe
NZ TAB is a small global betting platform with the worlds highest takeouts and wonders why it can't compete on the world stage.
NZ TAB should offer the lowest takeouts in the world and it will grow exponentially.

Honestly, how can anyone who was a part of the new FOB platform still have a job? $50mill + $17mill/year for what is the worst betting platform I have ever encountered.
Not only should every person who was a part of the process be sacked, there should also be an investigation into the whole process?

    Business 101    -   Avoiding Bankruptcy
1     Slash management to minimum.  Cap salaries at 60% of current.
    2     Cease bonuses
3     Hire Contractors & Casual Staff  -  Higher rate is amply compensated for by no  expenses  such as ACC, PAYE, KiwiSaver,  Sick Pay or Annual Leave.  Rate is negotiable.

Just a couple of things jump out reading the article   -
RITA plans to service South Island meetings from a team based in Christchurch, which will result in 11 of 13 positions in Dunedin being disestablished. Increased efficiencies will be gained through cross-skilling of roles.
A reliable source tells me that the Christchurch manager has been touting this for some years.  The last time he tried it they were flying in staff to southland meetings from all over the country and the travel and accommodation budgets blew out.
RITA has confirmed it will not reinstate racing on its AM and FM radio frequencies which were suspended last month.     -
Just like when they ceased freeview TV they will lose a lot of punters.  But then again did they even bother asking their punters ?

So just who is advising Mr McKenzie ?  The same managers whose previous decisions have brought us to the current position, therefore will get the same result.
Is there anyone auditing their decisions so in another year when still in the same fix, these decision makers are finally held to account.

Why did you apologise to Dean and the Board? Should they not apologise to you and all Racing people.
DM is not the man for the job. This required a ruthless person, one who can make tough decisions and sway the Board and who puts the industry in front of self interest.

Where are the staff at NZTR, HRNZ, RITA and the TAB, is no one employed to provide information, are none of the managers of these organisations capable of putting pen to paper, or fingers to keyboards
