Along similar lines....Talking about tracks/Merging etc........Here in the Mighty Manawatu, has anyone thought about selling off both Awapuni and the Trotting/Greyhound course as both surrounded by housing and on the fringe of the city - Then start with a clean sheet at Foxton?
Plenty of room to strech out at Foxton - Think Mega training centre with top notch facilities - Gallops/Trots?/Greyhounds.
Awapuni function centre could still be kept as offices/Function centre.
Foxton only 20 odd minutes away from Palmerston North.
Could even lobby to get the train line re-instated from Palmy to Foxton? - Could double up as a rail link for frieght from State highway 1 (Foxton into Palmy) and there used to be a rail line in place back in the day and plenty of room on the wide road shoulders.
Is that too much common sense for a Sunday? Should I go back to Sleep?
P.S - I'm not a member of either racing club and don't reside in Palmerston North or Foxton.

    Interesting times.
A couple of months ago, or a couple of years ago you could have browsed Race Cafe to read about dissatisfaction with the status quo.
Now that there are many changes afoot - you guessed it - you can pop on Race Cafe and read about dissatisfaction with change.
If you like something, have the guts to say so.  If you dislike something then (briefly) suggest an alternative.
Having a whinge about inaction and also having a whinge about change makes little sense.
Going by their 2019 Annual Report the TAB pulls in just under $30m revenue a month.  This month they've pulled in $50m from Winston together with a wage subsidy and whatever they've made from Aussie racing.  So this must easily be the best month's revenue ever for the TAB.  Then there is another $20m for two more synthetic tracks and ongoing TAB staff costs are allegedly heading down $10m per annum - when has that ever happened?
Arguably NZ Racing's best time ever.
(BTW if you think that you disagree with this statement then do so by nominating a better time - because if you are unable to nominate a better time, then you must be in agreement.)

Of course they did.......with over 20 windows needed for the busy day...I thought most came from Christchurch .
In a bus , then they went to iconic Kumara gallops on the Saturday.
At the January Wellington Cup day ,tote staff were flown down from Auckland for it.
These are the costs that need to be driven out of the system , so good on the TAB for getting on to this type of things.
    What's your point here ?
For an inane person I seem to have tickled your fancy ....ignore me ,I'm just an enthusiastic participant who knows a little about a lot of things which interest me.
You are a passionate Harness racing person involved in owning, training ,driving , administrating and fundraising. The Industry you have devoted your life to has been on a lengthy spiral of decline and it has nearly gone Bankrupt.
Instead of accepting the above and getting outsiders and experts to come in and help with a plan to possibly future proof the sport ,you have leapt on Social media to stir things up to basically help your own Club and personal interest. You even have a contact on Board or high up winding you up.
You called people idiots and pulled red herrings out to try and support your purpose.
    Its not working...ignore me !

Avondale RC members are feeling aggrieved at their loss of 'licence to race" and that is very understandable. But out of change comes opportunity. A chance to be part of something bigger than will be always successful. An amalgamation of the assets of Avondale,  Counties and ARC under the structure of private company.
Never mind the sop of a free room at Ellerslie - all Avondale JC members become Life Members with rights that transfer down to family in perpetuity wherever Northern  Inc races..
The funds coming from asset realization to be used to put AW tracks in at Pukekohe and Ellerslie and the creation of an investment fund that would support all racing activity.
Counties has excess land that has been rezoned and a rapidly growing population. With the asset backing available form a subsidary development division and build and retain the freehold investments.
If anyone else thinks they would like the Avondale assets AJC should tell them  to get stuffed. Its not much use giving them to the wasteful Goff. And to give to a charity is a feel good that will not last. Remember the great McKenzie charity that came from the store chain? I thought not!
Its a chance for AJC members to create something for their good for all time.

I see this as the NZ racing industry's last chance. No one is going to give us another big hand-out in a couple of years time. Its time to work together and yes make some sacrifices for the wider benefit or we won't have an industry.

Emotive - I applaud you for your ideas and they may well be in the future but until we view a feasibility study we can only assume that there isn't one.       Gom has highlighted genetic issues in our dogs and these should not be ignored or underestimated as failure is both irresponsible and avoidable.    Corey has requested some genetic guidelines.     A basic understanding is a must have.   It is a myth that the dam has more genetic influence than the sire.    The dam's increased importance is due to her role as carer during pregnancy and in rearing.     Genetic contributions to the offspring from the sire is equal to the contribution of the dam.    Most physical attributes of an animal are substantially influenced by the genes inherited from the two parents which each have two pairs of 39 chromosomes and each chromosome carries thousands of genes.    The risks associated with the choosing of a sire are very different to the risks with choosing a dam.    Once a sire has 80 or so pups to race the evidence of his genetic merit and more importantly his ability to pass on this genetic merit, has been tested.     A critical approach to bitch selection is essential as some outstanding race performers do not breed on.    They may have inherited a combination of genes in patterns that do not get passed on to their progeny.    Pedigree background is useful and important but there is a risk that too much attention gets paid to distant ancestors that contribute only a small proportion of genes to the animal of interest.   We all know that breeding successful greyhounds involves a substantial amount of luck, but a critical approach is necessary when selecting the parents.    Type and soundness are highly heritable.      Regarding different sire lines carrying genetic faults, it must be remembered that our top sires have thousands of puppies.    It is the percentage of puppies with these faults that matters.     Regards Ray

Closest analogy I can come up with is a religious faith...let's go with Catholic.
Thriving throughout most of the 20th century in NZ, churches quickly pop up in most towns and cities, willingly built and maintained by the generosity and voluntary labour of the faithful masses.
Modern life (and a few fiddlefests by the management) see the congregations dwindling.
Now each church building needs cash for earthquake strenghtening, continued maintenance and operating costs.
So who pays to keep each church up to public use standard?
Who owns the building if no one pays?
Does the current passing set of hymn singers get to decide?
    Tough one I'd suggest.

    buts that’s academic.
This ruthlessness is the best thing to hit racing.
Well overdue and the only thing that may give some hope to the industry. Stay doing what you are doing and you will all be racing for $10 at an equalisator meeting. 10 clubs and half the horses.. we might have something to keep the now interested people happy for their lifetime. The next generation will watch virtual racing, if at all.
The biggest losers are possibly the breeders with nowhere to get rid of their unwanted. “They” should have been funding an industry and its management, as they need it.
What concerns me is that WP gave us $72.5m. He doesn’t give out money without receiving something in return.

You will know all the answers to these questions you posing Mikie .
Did I see in one of your posts that Racing owns Waterlea ,and there has been talk about the great value of the land.
I guess if it comes down to a close decision a bit of personal bias always helps.
You obviously lean toward Blenheim !
You will know better than I ,but I'd guess the Nelson track considered better and they get that busy meeting in January which surely must do better turnover .
Most of the discussion lately is about what has gone on before......by us old men who stand with our arses on the rail squabbling amongst ourselves.
Can we bring about change which can breathe fresh life into what was / is a shrinking industry ?

She should have been kicked out of Avondale Jockey Club years ago, as should her "Besties" who are, or were Glaziers for the AJC & who is also on the committee.
Join the dots to a scam and a half re broken windows, it's in there books who was paying who without accountability. The glaziers wife best friends husband who was their accountant went down for IRD Fraud last year.
We'll known around the traps what has unlawfully gone on.
Racing doesn't need people like them in it cooking the books or bringing racing into disrepute.
Skinners comments are questionable if she's crossed legal boundaries when she has legal obligations under various laws & Racing Acts. Tut, tut

    Hi JJ , Greg
Thankyou for the free advice , since the other night when you freely dispensed your advice to Pam on another site then quickly backed that up advising someone on this site the correct business course he should taking to improve himself , but then promptly advised he was beyond redemption , good on you for ensuring he doesn't waste his time , well , iv'e been thinking how can i get a man of such outstanding business acumen and who clearly has led a spectacularly successful life to part with some gems of wisdom to me . Then low and behold there it was , free of charge and i'm sure given with charity in your heart . Not too condescending , just enough to ensure it was clear i was following the wrong path but with enough hope that i can get better . Anyway there was a reason for it being next year , but you know what , i'm taking your advise and running with it .
Now personally , and i offer this small piece of advice without any malice , i think with your wisdom you should offer your services to RITA/NZTR , and along with Triple A on board i genuinely think the future would be bright . If they turn you down then you could always offer your services as their RA RA team , because you seem on board with every thing and seem so positive about the organisations that have got so much spectacularly wrong , are going to get it all right this time . Although if we go along the lines that they must get something right eventually , well this could be the time . You have clearly seen this and are trying , sometimes futilely , to get us all on board .
Going forward i hope , if i'm not being too presumptuous , i can run any future posts past you prior to posting them . So if it's ok with you to PM you with these i would be honored . I will understand if you feel that is a step too far . If you feel it is better to improve me in public , so be it , i will defer to your better judgement .
Finally , when i showed my wife your post this morning she mumbled something along the lines of " he's a smart man " , so she's on board as well .
    Your student
    Grass hopper

P.S. I feel i should be completely honest with you , my wife's not really on board , when i asked her to clarify her mumble it ends up she actually said " he's a smart arse knowitall , tell him to feck off " , genuinely sorry sure she didn't mean it , i'll talk to her when she gets home . Wife's eh .

You mention those Metropolitan courses like their success occurs in isolation. It doesn't, they are ably assisted by smaller training centres and racecourses. They have a system for bringing horses through from the Picnic, country to the Metro tracks and back again if needed and it works very well one doesn't happen without the other.
Are you trying to say that you can close down all the tracks outside of the Metro tracks in Aus. and think you'll get the same outcomes they currently are? Try that statement on with some of the trainers at those Provincial venues and even Metro tracks and see how you get on.
NZracing isn't stuffed because we have 48 tracks or whatever number, most cost the industry nothing to operate (probably most of the tracks they'll try and sell) and provide product, this nonsense is being rammed down your throat as an excuse for poor leadership and shocking performance in NZracing for years. No different to Covid being used as an excuse for why RITA/TAB is stuffed.

In reading all of the comments in this topic there is only one conclusion a reasonable person could make based on the disunity expressed in the various comments and opinions.
Racing is stuffed as very few are able to take a step back and look at the big picture.
Very simply racing is successful in Aus for one main reason. The vast majority of betting turnover is wagered on Metropolitan racing in Sydney and Melbourne. Each city is roughly the size of NZ and has 2 or 3 racecourses. ( assuming  current plans to close Moonee Valley proceed).
It works because it’s economically efficient and punters have a better understanding of track conditions and how a horse is likely to perform before they bet.
As an industry if you want to ignore this reality and keep 48 racecourses throughout the country, then you may as well bend down and kiss your arse goodbye because racing here will be dead within 5-10 years.

This here is the biggest issue with centralised racing, the days of kids having a day at the races in a relaxed picnic atmosphere will be a thing of the past and these are are next generation of punters, jockey and trainers.  Maybe there will be a place for picnic meetings at these tracks that are closed for official racing to keep racing in the public eye in some form.

I spent a term on a club committee.
Maybe I was unlucky but I was gobsmacked by the entrenched self interest and insular thinking. My lasting impression was that for many committee members voluntary time given leads to pseudo ownership.
Also, the memory of a gasp-and-sigh-athon meeting with the AJC now leaves me with no sadness around their self inflicted demise.

Goodonya if you have profited from racing activities , the property you own is yours .
Clubs and their assets don't have a single owner , clubs have members who use the clubs assets , no one owns a club , very different to your privately owned property .
Handing over a clubs asset comes at no cost to any individual  so hand it over .
