Stables reacted to JJ Flash in TAB costs
Not sure those numbers are correct, if you look at RITA budget in November they had 685 full or part time employees and contractors. Cuts of 30% were announced recently and most contractors have been let go. On the wage front the 700K man left at Christmas and CFO departed not long after. All management took a pay cut when Covid arrived and a review is currently underway of management positions. My pick is the top team will be half the size it was very soon. People all said it was too expensive to operate and now the knifes been taken to employee costs but i suspect other costs will be under scrutiny as well where possible. The end result will be a far leaner operation but with that can come a drop in service levels for those not willing to embrace change.

There is one more that has to go. The chairman one K Spicer. Lowest polling board member and he is still chairman. He is the one that put this CEO in. The one that got rid of the last CEO  To much power. Has to go!

Good God, we are in heavy seas and no one is at the helm. Did he jump or was he pushed?. Maybe Ken Spicer and Colin Hair will jump in after him

Yes he is doing a brilliant job getting rid of Labour. I suppose we just have to wait a few days for the polls to show the results of his efforts. How many days do you think it will take the polls to reflect his efforts wiping out Labour?

I haven't had a look at the proposed dates yet as I know it will only depress me. I will do so soon.
The one thing I will say is don't let anyone tell you the cost benefit analysis shows it is justified on the basis that it will save trainers and owners the cost of having to travel to Blenheim and the East Coast. Owners choose to travel to these circuits for various reasons, and seem happy to do so. So any saving to owners is a total red herring. Getting rid of Blenheim doesn't mean stakes at Riccarton will increase. And not all horses like racing at Riccarton and Trentham, some prefer smaller turning tracks.
I can see the logic of moving the two big guineas races from Riccarton as virtually all of the horses come from the NI, and in that situation owners are compelled to travel their horses South at considerable expense. No one is compelled to travel to the East Coast or Blenheim.
If they are trying to eliminate horses having to travel to districts with no local horse population then surely the West Coast would be first to go.
It is also worth remembering that these meetings aren't generally being replaced with licences elsewhere, the licences are going altogether. So there will no longer be a $30,000 Cup on the East Coast, or a $25,000 Cup at Blenheim. Those horses just won't have opportunities elsewhere. And current and potential owners in those regions will gradually drift away. Even shares in the various big syndicates might prove difficult to sell in the neglected regions. Sponsors in the regions will probably be pleased to save their money and Racing will centre on the city tracks who can't attract sponsors as it is, let alone find sponsors for any additional meetings.
Before racing in the regions is destroyed I do think we should acknowledge the efforts of certain trainers, notably Myers, Rogerson, Baker and Forsman, and Te Akau, to support the regional meetings in the North, and Myers and the Parsons in the South. Without those trainers racing would have died in the regions years ago.
I do think it is a misguided idea to eliminate certain tracks. How misguided it is will become more apparent to me when I have a closer look at the proposed calendar.

Just put the platform in a box and send it to London and tell them to FO, deal over and you get not a cent more

Do you think that RITA would have faced insolvency if the pandemic had not arrived. RITA was already drafting plans to reduce staffing levels and other costs. We will come out of this with a much more streamlined, efficient, profitable organisation

From what I've read of your posts John, you must be a very unhappy man. Rita was formed to reconstruct racing according to the outline provided in The Messara Report. They have started doing exactly that. The covid 19 pandemic accelerated some of the change by exposing the mess left for RITA to clean up by John Allen and his Racing Board cronies. Rita have been able to remove most of the debt left behind by the Racing Board ,with considerable help from the Minister of Racing the Right Honourable Winston Peters. As I posted in an earlier post

RITA set out the situation in clear form enabling the Minister of Racing to convince his Cabinet colleagues to support a much needed funding bailout. There is no need to discuss your second question as it will not happen

This is a huge, historic achievement. It's genuinely news worthy. It's just unfortunate that if it did make the news it would probably be Reported on by Michael Morrah who would have to mention "oh and by the way this guy is currently facing criminal charges for animal cruelty/cheating. Hmm maybe don't mention it on the news after all. So I agree with Everton's comments, Roso is OTT talking about Cole, it's inappropriate and cringe worthy, but it doesn't stop with Roso, the TAB had him plastered all-over the TV last week previewing each race, and GRNZ why is he even allowed back on track!!??
However, as for punting, I've gotta do what I've gotta do...I did used to struggle backing Cole because the whole situation makes me ill, however I do punt the dogs, and I do put in analysis, so once I do that, (head over heart) I have no problem punting in C.D as its still a product that I can trust in terms of form analysis, yesterday I had a big night...
Rc1 got Angel at 1.55 she was a moral (paid 1.20 tote).
Rc2 Baby was a great bet at 2.50 (paid 1.70)
    Sir Duggie back to C4.
Cheese and chalk - ultra reliable paid 6's !!!
    Jonie
Bigtime Rod  huge overs at 9's most wins/experience in the race.
Bigtime Fairy what an impressive win from the pocket rocket.
So I guess I'm abit conflicted...
I'm making money on the punt, but I don't like the shape this great game is in at all.

NZ Racing has been lacking in collaboration for 50 years or more when it comes to agreeing to a plan/strategy to future proof the Industry.
Of course there has been a lot of challenges along the way.......Lotto,Casino,Pokies and overseas competition ,Sharemarket crash , GFC ,ACC costs, Health & Safety and other legislation incl employment law,Earthquakes etc etc then the Racing Act and the general change in population  spread , immigration and huge change in attitudes.People got more materialistic , needed 3 x cars and 3 x TV's per household and 2x overseas trips a year etc etc.Greyhounds split the pie !
Interest in horses dwindled professional stables and syndication changed the face of NZ Horse racing ......money coming into racing mainly went into stakes which helped some including Breeders.
The cost of racing horses escalated.
Being closer to Australia has seen us stall in comparison as they buoyed by a huge betting population and Government backing. Ditto Hong Kong. Many of our good get sold or aim to race overseas [eg Sunline, Lyall Creek ,Lazarus]
National Administrators tended to be those with the biggest self interest like breeders and regional administrators .
For over 40 years most agree we have too many tracks yet no one had the backing or nous to act. Our funding has been scattered and infrastructure has suffered. Buildings decrepit , track surfaces inconsistent and poor .
Younger people have too many options ,and the love of the horse and rural outlook lost among youth.
Things were left to drift on as it was in the 1940's and 1950's.
Lifestyles changed and even among trainers and participants they soon found staying at home in front of TV with beer in fridge and betting on telephone then internet was amazing ....no traffic , more spare time ,much easier ,cheaper and Trackside TV just kept getting better ,including blossoming Aussie racing ! Sports betting ....bait and switch....Racing bets went to sport.
Still the Administrators couldn't or wouldn't change things.
Regional Bias became stronger , stakes had stagnated so Codes talked NZRB to pay out more money than they earned.....betting blossomed but costs escalated.
They lost control of the money and their equity.
The TAB went bankrupt ....couldnt pay the bills.
Covid 19 came and masked things.
Here we are......we got an Aussie in to help ,of course its taken a while to settle on plan......no one wants to lose their track and the odd raceday,  no one !
Those likely to , have turned bitter....Avondale with healthy cash flow ,balances and huge equity maintain they cost the Industry nothing.
How about the BRAND of Racing ,the place a disgrace and they argue that Messara didn't visit !Blame and denial !
Other clubs maintain the same ,they they sit there with very borderline facilities and healthy cash and equity yet still take funds off the Industry and deny others and apply for huge funding....gimme ,gimme ,gimme !
The axe is wielded and still there is blame ,denial and name calling RITA as idiots.
These clubs with the cash and equity IMO should contribute both solutions and equity to the Industry.
Their members don't OWN the equity.
Rita's cost cutting only half the equation.
They will continue to bleed unless betting in NZ resumes and quickly gets to previous levels.
Will the Government step up again , they only have paid the current bills so they can continue trading !
If the Code Boards , personnel and the personal interests backing them don't change then Funding and stakes will be slaughtered and the industry will be racing for kumaras in bags !
    JMO
Yes....a waffle , but the Insolvency implications not getting thru NOR is the fact that stakes rely on betting which already is over 50% Australians betting on our races !

    Grandad47 (Ray)

Based on what I know and what I have read, I don't believe racing has much of a future when our only solution to this crisis is to reduce costs clubs and tracks. To continue on the same path in this environment, an environment saturated with hundreds of attractive alternatives competing for the same dollar, that is suicidal behaviour. The racing industry has always been the domain of those who see no further than their backyard, clinging to their boundary pegs for dear life. When they should have been looking to amalgamate and consolidate, they built higher fences instead. More tracks will close by the end of next season. More should have been closed now.

Avondale sits on an absolute goldmine. If sold up the money could be used to build a state of the art training facility elsewhere. A facility attached to an existing non-racing track. It would give trainers the opportunity to relocate into one of the designated centralised areas. There is so much that the proceeds could do for racing in general, but because the club now has the hump, all we hear is slash and burn. Just one of many examples of industry shortsightedness. Woodville I believe sold of their track for a dollar so after years of punters, trainers, and jockeys supporting their club, they threw any possible benefit to those people away.

    To survive the next 10 years we have to work and think smarter;
-provide a product that appeals to more people,
-provide a product that is more socially acceptable,
-level the playing field with reliable income,
    -provide more employment opportunities,
-partner up with other mainstream providers,
    -introduce wagering competition,
-but most of all, we need to change the mindset of all who participate. If we are not willing to change, racing is doomed. It's like watching the Titanic circle the iceberg.
